  • Can you still charge via the usb c port?

    • Yup https://youtu.be/1qtH5pdd4Q4 around 8:01 they say so

      • That’s good.

    • +1

I think the USB-C port for charging is flawed, it's convenient if you have like a shared USB-C adapter with other devices, but having owned two versions of the macbook pro where I needed to use USB-C to charge, the clutch strength of the port wears off pretty fast and doesn't to be rated for many inserts, well not as much as the lifteime to charging then moving about and plugging it back in. The magsafe is definitely welcomed back as an option.

    • yes - but may not offer the quick charge functionality/etc

  • I can't decide whether I should bite the bullet for the 32GB ram. Hoping it'd last another 10 years like my current MBP.

    • If you're only browsing the web and editing documents, you probably don't need the M1 Max or 32GB of RAM. Contrary to popular belief, Chrome doesn't require 1TB of RAM. :)

      • Currently I have one or two Docker containers running, training ML models in Python and doing visualisations in RStudio.
Moving back and forth between my Desktop and Laptop. Ideally I'd like to shift all my work to my laptop and leave my desktop for my personal things.

        • +2

This can definitely serve as a desktop replacement. If you're doing heavy virtualisation I'd spring for the 32GB, the extra memory bandwidth of the M1 Max may help in that respect too. If you aren't certain, it may be best to wait for independent reviews. These likely won't have the supply issues that other electronics are facing. Unless you need one urgently, you won't have any trouble finding one further down the line.
