for once the specs match the price

  • +24

It is honestly astonishing how far Apple has come in such a short period of time with these chips.

    • +3

      I cannot wait for benchmarks.

    • +1

to be fair - they have been developing these since early ipads.

  • +2

    Cheaper at Apple AOC

  • +1

Great chip great product! too poor to afford it

    • I can't believe they added a camera notch. What in the heck.

      • +3

look at it the other way, they did not "add" a notch, they just fill up the gap that used to be a black thick bar. I understand the norch is sth to get used to, especially for OCD (i am one)

  • +4

    Inb4 notch-gate.

  • +7

I’ll wait for January back to school promotion, same price with free AirPods.

    • I am on the same boat, hope for the best

    • I don’t remember if Apple will give free Airpods every year?

      • No, not always. Previously they have also given away Beats headphones.

They will probably only give away the cheaper AirPods 2. Make you pay to upgrade to the AirPods 3, or the AirPods Pro.

        • hope it’s the AirPods 3

    • Is it these prices but with a bonus thrown in or higher price and a bonus thrown in?

  • -7

    Oh,oh, new MacBooks ,hi, bye.

  • +23

I was worried it would cost me an ARM and a leg…

    • -2

Love it. Downvoted for telling the truth. Got to love these forums.

      • +2

Remind us all how this new product with new CPU, GPU, storage, screen and in a 14" form factor has been around for ages at this price? Once you do that I am sure the +v will come.

  • +1

If storage and memory was manufactured by them as well, I'm pretty sure price would be lower too. Amazing what Apple has done with their new SOC.

Anyways this new enclosure and with the added ports just brings me back to the time of 2009 or even before that haha the fatter base.

    • +1

They don't manufacture the SoC, they design it, with currently TSMC doing the actual manufacturing. I wouldn't think the margins are there for doing the same with storage and memory.

      • -1

Well yeah sorry I meant design. Intel would still command a much higher price for their shitty power hungry CPUs.

  • +7

Nah, can buy an RTX with that $$$ lol

  • +1

    Excited abt notch

  • +1

NOTCH is too big , doesn’t even have face id

    • Face ID coming soon - Rumour

  • +1

Misinformation on the upgrading to the MAX. It is not just $270 but also another $540 for the 32g Ram.

    • +1

      On mobile, fixed.

  • +1

Love the competition this will give to other OEMs but that notch would personally annoy me.

  • I just bought a XPS 17 9710 and now regretting it looking at apple's M1 Max chip performance

    • How much did you paid for that?

      • I got the top-spec model config which contains an Intel i9 11980HK, 64gb ram, 2tb nvme SSD and an RTX 3060 for $3500 AUD through a mate of mine.
It's pretty cheap considering the same model retails for $8600 on Dell's website

        • +4

Look at it this way, it comes down to use case. Whilst I have a foot in both camps (but not boot camp), unless you are doing things on a Mac which benefit from the raw ARM performance, or you're a content creator in the Apple optimised world, chances are you'd probably get more enjoyment out of the XPS anyway for gaming and Windows applications in general. If you were just looking for casual everyday use (ie nothing which really needs high performance CPU or GPU), then you could've bought a much cheaper laptop which would've been more suitable (and probably have better battery life).

Whilst I like to think I'm a professional user, the reality is my needs are much more casual since it's mainly web browsing, iMessage, light gaming (I still play CSGO for example), etc… and I value portability and battery life, and connectivity with my Airpods Pro. Therefore the M1 (non Pro/Max) actually makes the most sense for me and I use a 13" MBP M1 which has great battery life. My Razer Blade with a 2070MQ is great if I do want to play games on the go but the short battery life and weight of the laptop (and power pack) means I don't tend to bother with it too often nowadays except to move around the house whihc is a bit moot since I have a decent desktop.

        • Holy shit. What a beast!

        • you wont be limited to shitty macOS with that…

    • +2

I've got a 9570 i9 with 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD and I'd swap it for one of these new Macbook Pro's in a heartbeat.

      • Are you having heating issues with yours? Mine is the 9710 with the vapourchamber cooling and it even struggles with the i9 on basic tasks.

        • Yep the fans crank up during basic tasks pretty often.

          • @AusGeno: It is ridiculous but the display on both laptops is amazing (assuming you have the 4k panel). Might be worthwhile selling your laptop off and picking up one of these if you can

            • +2

@hotdogwater22: I do have the 4k, you're right it's a gorgeous screen but I don't need it to be a touch-screen, I never touch it and when I accidentally do it just leaves fingerprints.

        • Just make sure it shuts down properly before you put it in a bag. I have an older version and the current series of Dells and Windows have removed S3 sleep and replaced it with "hybrid sleep" or whatever it's called and it's flaky as shit. Couple times I've closed the laptop assuming it was in sleep and popped it in my bag, only to feel it burning through the bag 20 minutes later as it was overheating.

They even have this FAQ which specifically states they should not be put in a bag when on standby: https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/FAQ-Modern-Standby/td-p/7…

  • +4

    no povo pack options here.

  • +3

And even better prices using UNIDAYS - $2,713 for the basic 14inch, and $3,380 for the basic 16inch.

Shut up and take my money!

    • +1

      Thanks, added!

  • I have an existing 2014 MBP and love this new MBP as it has Magsafe + SD card etc. However I am looking at same casual gaming, and most games are Windows based. I am also interested in XBox xCloud gaming as I was involved in Beta release.

I assume that even with the new specs for this MBP, I would not be able to dual boot to Windows, and play games, right? I love the MBP build quality but I am seriously getting a Windows based laptop.

    • No dual boot, and even Parallels for Windows on Arm is not guaranteed. Unless you're happy with Apple Arcade and the few Steam/Origin games which run on Mac, I'd probably stick to a Windows based laptop then.

The question is how many of those casual games are Windows only, or do they have Mac versions (eg CSGO, Borderlands, etc) which will run through Rosetta if they aren't already optimised for ARM.

      • +1

Bummer. What would be the equivalent Windows laptop that would have similar form factor + build quality + display quality as the new MBP? I have access to Education pricing if this helps (I do work in the education sector). Admittedly I always find the poor build quality of Windows laptops annoying.

I haven't looked at Apple Arcade yet but will investigate.

        • +1

Could always go Razer if you want something as similar to Apple in terms of build/aesthetic/price. That being said, they have a less than stellar record when it comes to post-sales support so when I bought mine, I deliberately bought it from JB Hifi so I could also get extended warranty too from them and not have to risk dealing with Razer should it break.

  • +3

lol they brought back the HDMI and sd card slot……… really apple? you removed it in 2016 and then decided to bring it back in 2021….. WHY DID YOU REMOVE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!!!

    • +1

They will remove it again in few years and bring them back to make people upgrade again!

      • +1

if they add a 10gbps ethernet port to the macbook pro next year I will loose my mind lol.

    • Yep, should never have been removed from a laptop to start with.

    • I think Jonny Ive pushed for their removal and then he left Apple.

      • Steve Jobs might have returned fromt the grave to make more practical apple products again lol,.

    • you can see the comments, so people praise them for no reason and apparently 3400$ is cheap

      • 2 to 6k is usually the general price tag for a mac, pretty sure if your into macs your not caring about the price anymore.

        • its weird, you dont need to spend $3000 on a laptop as a Uni student unless you are in one of the productivity or programming fields lol

          • @Freestyle: so yeah bascially important uni students pay 3000 :D (developers are important)

  • yeah I am going to keep my macbook pro M1 13 inch with 16gb or ram and 1tb ssd.

I still havent' seen a use case where its worth the upgrade to this new m1 pro chip mainly becaues developers haven't caught up yet.

    • +2

I hate to say it but I agree. I haven't yet found a time where the M1's performance has left me wanting, although I probably will upgrade at some point in the future.

      • by the time we upgrade all the developers will have upgraded there apps for apple silicon and it will be a way better experience :D

  • +2

Is that a 3.5" headphone jack I have seen in the photos too?!

    • +1

I'm eagerly awaiting reviews of whether the high impedance headphones support is just marketing bluff, or if it can actually drive headphones which would have otherwise needed an external amp.

      • This is a good addition, let’s see if it performs like a average dac/amp or not.

  • +4

another impressive spec is the maximum sustained brightness of 1,000 nits!! with a peak of 1,600 nits with HDR content.
and just some fun calculations…the 16in with M1 max ($5,249) is $4,600 with unidays, then pay with 15% off gift cards (from woolies/coles), so you get the top of the range 16in MacBook for about $3,900

    • Thanks, those are some insane brightness numbers! Added.

    • +1

      15% off Apple Gift Cards?

    • Where are the 15% off gift cards?

        • can someone explain this?, so essentially I get 15% back via flybuys aka "credit to use at Coles for future purchased?" or does the 15% come off the actual price of the Apple gift cards at checkout?

          • @GReeeeN: No not at Apple, you get the 15% back as credit to use at Coles.

    • -1

But you can only use upto 8 gift cards at once meaning $4k max :(

      • +1

go and do some reading, the topic has been addressed so many times already. short answer is yes, you can pay in full with gift cards, just add all gift cards to your Apple ID balance.

        • Thanks. I completely forgot!

  • Looking to upgrade from 2013 macbook pro

  • Pretty happy. Can finally retire my 2013 MBP. Specced up a 14 inch to the 24 GPU core and hoping I can get another 8 years like i did with my previous MBP.

  • feels bad when i bought the 16 mbp for $3300 14 months ago

    • The new 16" model would cost a lot more though!

  • +1

The new macbooks proves that all the apple products are top-notch.

  • +2

This is a slam dunk laptop. I am actually astonished by the specs! I mean which laptop comes with a 1600 nits hdr display, much less the quality of an Apple display. Then is the CPU/GPU and various other accelerators on the chip. To be honest, you could not get a laptop even close to this at twice the price. This is actually great value!

P.S. 7.4 gbps for the SSD as well. INSANE!

    • Ok if you say so . I'll load up a couple accounts with the next 15% off pts deal using MC's for maximum bang .

    • +1

That's a big step up from the 2GB/s found in the standard M1! Thanks, added.

  • Hope cashrewards will come to the table and includes these into their cashback lineup later on.

    • +1

They won't for a while. That's pretty standard.

  • I was feeling bad about getting a M1 Air at the start of the year, but then the base 14" M1 Pro is more than double what I paid for the Air, so there would have been no convincing the wife I need it.

    • +1

Buy first, then put on the noise cancelling headphones afterwards :-)

      • Thankfully we don't have a need for it now.

  • Does anyone thing they will add these ports to their next Macbook air? I really want to get this for the ports but I don't really need all that computing power. If they added the ports to the air line and with the air line price tag that would be sweet

    • Yeah, it was a crazy move to delete ports to start with. Should always have had a SD card and HDMI port.

    • They might not add the ports because anyone who wants the ports will have the get the Pro where Apple makes more revenue.

  • IF anyone wants a UniDays code today, let me know :)
