  • Thanks mate.

All at the light weight of 110kg

    • ohhh wow !

    • +6

Nice. I bench 120kg. So could watch TV while benching this. Win win.

      • +5

If you're bench pressing this TV, you're not watching the TV, you're watching 1/16th of it.

        • +5

You would have to put the TV on the bench.
          And then bench the bench.

        • +3

Why you got to make assumptions about how long his arms are?

        • Lol gold 😂

      • +2

video or it didnt happen :D

      • +4

        Humble brag

  • +2

    Picture quality better than projector?

    • +3

      Oh yes.

    • +3

It depends….if it's a high-end projector then I doubt this TV be better as it's not a high end model.
Projectors give you an experience of watching a movie in a cinema. TV's will never be able to replicate that experience due to differences in technology.

I have a high end Panasonic TV with Kuro technology (about as good as an OLED TV minus the HDR) and a projector. I always watch movies on my projector as it reminds me on good old days when I was able to go to a cinema. I even make popcorn with yellow butter and pour coke in paper cups to enhance the experience (even though I'm in a lockdown at home)

      • +4

Hisense have a pretty good reputation for picture quality, I would say this TV would produce a better picture than 90% of projectors on the market.

Your comment about OLED is a little strange too, have you ever seen one in person?
I can guarantee a 2021 LG OLED would absolutely blow your 2007 1080p Kuro out of the water. It’s not a debate about different technologies, you’re just talking about a TV that’s nearly 15 years old against the latest cutting edge tech.

        • Yes subjectively my Hisense's screen is at the top end of what I see in stores.

        • +1

Reminds me of when I sold TVs and people would come in and say that their Sony Trinitron CRTs were better than the 1080p panels in store 🙄

          • +3

@jubjub: Some early 1080p lcds were horrendous!

            • @ChadHominem: Can agree with that 🙂 this was around 2008 though, definitely not 1st gen!

        • "I can guarantee a 2021 LG OLED would absolutely blow your 2007 1080p Kuro out of the water"
It's actually a Panasonic Plasma with Kuro technology (Panasonic bought Pioneer's Plasma IP)

I have seen OLED playing demo videos at JB Hi-Fi. I've also had OLED panel on my phones well before they started using them in TV's (starting with Google Nexus One in 2007), so, yes, I'm aware of their advantages. OLED TV's have great colour reproduction and deep blacks. So do Plasma TV's.

Have you seen a calibrated Plasma TV playing 1080p content? I guess not. It feels like watching a movie in the cinema. The colours (even without HDR) are just the way director wanted you to see. I think OLED TV's have too much post-processing built in that makes picture a bit artificial. But then again, a calibrated OLED may look more natural than default setup.

Also, take a look at a discussion about OLED Vs Plasma. It's a close call I think.
          https://www.whatsbestforum.com/threads/is-oled-really-better…
          https://www.avforums.com/threads/pioneer-kuro-to-lg-oled.231…

One thing for sure is that when my Plasma dies it will be replaced by an OLED or (hopefully) micro LED if the price is right.

          • @vrsac: Nexus One was 2010 brother!

          • +2

@vrsac: I actually owned a Pioneer Kuro many many years ago, I now own a 77in LG OLED so I’m fairly familiar with the differences.
While the Kuro was THE reference tv in the late 2000’s things have moved on pretty dramatically since then. The OLED trumps it in pretty much every measure you can think of: it’s brighter, has better colour reproduction, deeper blacks, ability to play UHD/4K content, Dolby Vision, HDR, HDMI 2.1…

It’s not that the Kuro was a bad TV, in its time it was the best TV you could own… but that was close to 15 years ago.
Nothing wrong with holding on to your Kuro until it dies though, and I can guarantee you’ll love your OLED just as much when you make the move.

            • +1

@cubeh: Totally agree on this. Had the last gen pioneer plasma calibrated professionally and was mind blowing then, went OLED and watched most of my content again

          • -1

@vrsac: Your wrong there.. Pioneer sold its manufacturing facilities and IP to Panasonic…

        • Hisense have a pretty good reputation for picture quality

I'm looking at TV reviews and have read that Hisense uses the same TV model names for international models, but they are completely different TVs. Something to be aware when viewing reviews on US sites such as rtings (where they clearly mention this). It seems Aus models aren't necessarily as good as their US counterparts, not saying they're bad overall though.

  • +11

Surely it's worth hanging out for something a bit bigger. This won't cover all of the wall for many of us.

  • easy to crack

  • +32

I’m working from home. Is this suitable as a computer monitor?

    • +16

It's okay but not perfect. Ideally you're looking up around the 120" range for a good monitor

      • Defs need larger for computer monitor. Ideally you should sit about 10cm away from screen

      • +3

144" is the standard today. But most professionals are moving to 292" (Samsung) or 325" (LG). You can go bigger, but the resolution will be non standard. And you will need to put an order in for a nuclear submarine to power the thing.

    • +3

Would love to see excel on this

      • +1

You need Nanocell tech for that.

  • Holy s4it thats huge

      That's what she said ;-)

      • +1

        Saaaa funneeee

  • HN same price looks like it

    • +1

I'd pay more just not to get it from Hardly Normal

  • +2

    Really wanted 110" 😅

  • Could grab 2-3 4k short-throw laser projectors for this price 🤔 I can't see why people buy large expensive TVs anymore. Still crazy how the prices change though. I remember seeing 75" Hisene 1080p TVs for 8k back in 2014 and that was meant to be a deal, hah.

    • I remember when rear projectors were phasing out and 50" plasmas were the big deal selling for $8-9k

      • I, too, remember that time. I got a 50" Celestial rear-projection TV for a few hundred bucks thanks to those lovely plasmas haha. Crickey, that must have been like near 20 years ago now? 😱

      • +1

This will make be sound old. I remember when a mate's parents bought a 40" plasma when they first came out for 25k

        • Yep, I remember seeing a plasma at DJs as a uni student. Price was 32k from memory.

        • Well you've topped my story. A friend paid $12K for a 42" Rank Arena panel that didn't have a digital tuner.
          And I paid $3k for a 42" LG rear projector TV 😂

        • Same. Remember seeing the first 40-42" plasma @ JB for about $30k.

    • If these were lighter I would consider it. I have the jvc 7900 projector on a 115" screen amd although the PQ is amazing, you still can't beat the PQ of a tv (well a good tv)

      • Fair, I guess we only watch streaming services and don't fork out for the UHD plans, so probably don't notice a huge difference. We use an old projector from a hospital I helped re-fit. The thing has to be at least 10 years old now and is still running fine. WXGA converted to 1080p haha. Having a whole wall light up does bring a bit of magic to it though I feel, vs a TV anyway.

edit: AND HOLY JESUS THIS THING WEIGHS 110KG WHAT THE HELL

    • Agree. The good thing about updating a projector, is that you don't need 7 people to carry into in a hired B-double if you decide to sell. Plus you would not want to play PSVR with move controllers on a 100" TV with a same screen replacement the cost of a TV :P

      • Hey, if you are buying projector screens, I suggest looking up DIY Ambient Light Rejection screens. There's entire forums dedicated to it with people who have done the hard work already haha. Can make an amazing one for <$40 with some bunnings paint and card.

        • +1

My wall is Dulux Natural White so don't need a screen :P
I have been using it for years so I can't complain.
If I decide to go a larger screen to 130" or go back to 110", it is a very hard process of turning the zoom clockwise or anti-clockwise on the projector.
          Extremely difficult process!!!

          • +1

            @vinni9284: hahaha, indeed!

But seriously, check out the ambient light rejection stuff, it's a shade of grey and the difference in picture quality is pretty nuts!

            • @lulzenberg: Thanks mate will do! Cheers

            • @lulzenberg: There is good paint for black level enhancing screens but there is no paint that can reject ambient light (it would have to reflect light from the sides or above or below which requires being able to paint reflective particles on to a wall so the reflective sides of the particles all face the same way, or even one way one side of the screen and the opposite way on the other if you want to reject light from the sides. If you can do that make me some striped paint as well please :-)

Ambient Light Rejecting screens are made of multiple layers of material which CAN be manufactured to reflect light in chosen directions on each layer.

ALR screens are usually grey but a simple grey screen does not make an ALR screen.

                • @lulzenberg: @lulzenbrg Yep, as it says in the big red font near the top of the post it's a HIGH GAIN screen, as you would expect. That's different to an Ambient Light Rejecting screen. I'll leave you to look it up but basically it reflects more light than a standard unity gain or 1.1 gain white screen hence providing a brighter image. That has nothing to do with rejecting light from anywhere, quite the opposite in fact.

                  • @skysurfer: Ok? it's a guide to making an screen that looks to be rejecting ambient light, my neighbours have done the same? I see one mention of 'high-gain' in the entire thread, i don't know what your point is - this is what i've seen done and it works well in rooms with light?

      • +2

I used to work on super yachts. Have seen TVs so big they have to be installed before the yacht is finished to get them in.

        • That would've been awesome!

        • What if you get a dead pixel later

          • +1

@42: You just buy a new super yacht.

    • Except those projectors can't really do HDR (and no chance Dolby Vision), and you're not getting anywhere near the real contrast ratio and brightness of a tv

Projectors are great otherwise, but if I could afford the 6k to throw on a tv, I'd be buying the tv

  • TVs are still brighter than projector pictures, unless the room is dark enough

    • Have you tried the laser projectors on an ambient light screen? You can have all the blinds open and watch them fine.

      • Nope, what kind of spec do I look out for? Any model in particular?

        • the "Xiaomi Mi 150” Ultra Short-Throw Laser Projector" is amazing. We plan on getting one as our neighbours have one. They made their own ambient light rejecting screen with a guide to mixing the paint and it's amazing. The back of their 'cinema room' is basically just windows with block-out blinds. When they have them open, there is near no difference to when the blinds are shut. A lot nicer mood with the blinds shut though.

      • No I haven't tried the particular projector model you mentioned. My projector worked ok in ambient light as well, just nowhere as bright as the tv I bought at around the same time.

This TV was $4995 plus delivery between midnight and 11am on 7 October 2021.

I follow it's price on Little Birdie

    https://www.littlebirdie.com.au/shop/deal/100-s8-4k-uhd-smar…

I intended to buy it that day, but when the price changed to $5995 at 11am it blew my budget.

I called my local Good Guys (Kotara NSW) and they said although they couldn't do the old $4995 price anymore, they would do $5400 + delivery ($90).

You definitely want to get this puppie delivered.

So my advice is, if you are buying this TV your target price is $5400 + delivery…..

    • Wait for black friday?

      • +1

The 100S8 is a 2020 model but Hisense never came out with a 100" model in 2021.

A lot of retailers I have spoken to say the return rate on the 100S8 is high - mainly because it won't actually fit into the houses/units they are trying to deliver it to. It comes on it's own pallet….

Black Friday is 26 November this year?
I guess if you can wait that's great. I can't wait that long.

    • Even the box weighs 80kg - definitely need delivery.

  • +1

seems alot for 2020 base model tv, can get 2021 86" lg $2695, is the extra $3300 worth it?

    • +2

This is not a base model TV. The 85 and 100 inch S8 TV's are significantly better than the smaller models.

      • fair enough if thats the case, just notice it has a $15k rrp

        • There is always a price premium for size. Look at the price premium on say a Sony 65" vs 85"…

That may be the RRP but I haven't ever seen anyone asking more than $12k since it was released.

I have been tracking it pretty closely.

  • Much appreciated if someone can compare this Hisense TV with this TCL TV 100P715 TCL 100 INCH QUHD ANDROID TV

    • +1

Both three year warranty. Both similar specs.

Most likely both have an identical panel driven by different software.

The Hisense uses Vidaa which isn't as popular with many people as the Google/Android OS that TCL uses from memory.

Note all the comments I have seen about Google/Android OS on the 85U80G Hisense say that it is significantly and noticeably slower than Vidaa, but that it does offer more apps and arguably a better upgrade path.

Personally I dont give a crap about the OS on the TV's as I run 99.99% of my content through them via other devices so I never use the apps in the TV's.

They are pretty similar so a lot comes down to brand preference. TCL is the top selling TV brand in the USA, but it's never really taken off here.
My experience in the past with TCL is that they are cheap garbage - but that seems to be changing.

My experience with Hisense has been good - and their warranty support in my experience has also been excellent. That's why I want the Hisense 100S8….

      • both are quite smilar - just wouldnt buy any because of how pixellated they both look on FTA —

Saw them side by side at 2 stores running FTA and normal content. Money better spent on a Samsung Mini Led QN Series in a 85.

        • +1

I don't watch FTA except the NRL and AFL grand finals. I wish Foxtel could broadcast them live in 4K.

Are you talking 1080p FTA or SD ?

SD looks crap on even a 75" so no surprise it looks bad on a 100".

Did you see FTA on the Samsung QA85QN85AAW ?

Part of the problem is that Australian FTA is such crap quality. Even on the best 85" in the world it's going to be mediocre….

      • +1

In terms of pricing the best advertised price I have seen for the Hisense is $4995 (The Good Guys, 7 October 2021).

The best advertised price for the TCL I have seen is $4892.80 (JB HiFi 20% off sale, 14 July 2021).

Because of the high ticket price, any % off discounts add up very quickly

Note both TCL and Hisense are indirectly controlled by the Chinese government. That doesn't bother me but it bothers some buyers…

There is an OzBargain user who recently purchased a 100S8 - InLaymansTerms. I would be interested to hear his feedback. He had his wall in his new house specially reinforced so the wall could support the 110kg behemoth + wall mount….

        • What a hell is this fascination with the Chinese government. It's a freaking TV. Is it because they pay local taxes to the Chinese govt at some point?

          • @siiking: The Chinese government own or at least control a lot of these companies.

In some cases, like Huawei, they are accused of implanting spyware within the products….

            • +1

@TheCandyMan2020: Thanks dude. I’m aware of the accusations. I’m just really fed up with this Cold War crap

              • +1

@siiking: It might get to be a quite warm war in the next few years….

                • @TheCandyMan2020: I hope these kind of talk can stay out of ozb, I come here for bargains

                  • @siiking: no worries you just keep your head in the sand mate

  • -3

    bought 10 thanks mate

  • +2

That's decent, these sizes were going for much more not long ago, great to see there coming down in price.

  • Are these step up or down from Q series?
