  • thick as, wish they'd do deals on 0w-20 or similar.

    • Indeed that's the hardest one to come by on sale. When it does go on sale stock pile it.

"thick as" for an icy Europe maybe, but bang on for an Aussie summer.

My old car likes it's oil like I like my women, thick and ready for sludge to fill its holes…

0w20 oils are for relatively new cars plus they always full synthetic so price is always going to be higher.

Any car that specifies 15W-40 is going to be at least 15 years old.

For $12.99 on special I'd instead go the Castrol Ultraclean semi https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/650097

    • Yeah unless you can get the Super cheap one for a further $5 or $10 off

  • Not sure if I'd use gulf western tbh!

as long as they meet specs on the bottle and that's suitable for your vehicle, no problem.

      • Father in law was a mechanic for 36 years until 2019. Always recommends and uses Gulf Western for value for money.

That said, this spec oil in the deal is not great for vehicles I've owned. Recommended is 5w-30 for cars I've owned, and he always said to use 10w-30. Maybe a QLD climate thing. Buyer caution on what works for your vehicle

        • 10 winter oils should be fine for most climates here, as long as you let the car get up to temp before any hard driving.

        • 15 is just cold flow rate. A semi syn 15 can flow just fine at -20 celcius.

These low 0-5-10 cold rated oils are just around because they're jack of all climate oils. It's not necessarily that much more costly to produce them either.

Gulf Western makes some excellent products in my experience in mechanical maintenance.

Their SYN-TS transmission fluid is the best oil for any box calling for ATF (manual or auto). Makes the notchiest T5 or T56 transmissions shift like butter. Also suitable as a fluid for ZF automatics where the genuine fluid is practically scam pricing.

Their Synfleet MX 10W-40 is great for people who have many different cars in their fleet, as it is suitable for use in almost everything you can throw at it.

At the lower end of the market, they also make some good entry level mineral and semi-synthetic oils such as the HDEO in this deal.

Basically, these guys make good oil and if they claim a certification on the bottle that is relevant to your application, don't hesitate to use it on your machinery.

  • If it states that it's suitable for use in wet clutch motorcycles it means there are no detergents or friction modifiers which are good things. I would probably avoid using in passenger vehicle unless you don't mind frequent oil changes.
