This looks like a very good budget laptop

    [Officeworks] (https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/acer-aspir…)

This is the i3 version. Is it better?

    • +12

I think the 8gb of ram (this one) compared to 4gb (the i3 one from officeworks) will have a bigger impact than the CPU.

      • thoughts on vega3 vs g1 ?

      • +5

AMD processor is a newer 2020 Q2 processor but the score is 4121
Intel is an older 2019 Q2 processor with a slightly better score of 5253
Yes 8GB is the minimum - but RAM can upgraded

        • +6

          but RAM can upgraded

          For most people the:
          1. Extra cost
          2. Having to open the laptop and manually install the RAM

Would be the issue. I'd pick the 8GB RAM version over the 4GB RAM version despite the CPU power difference.

        • +3

USB 3.1 & 8h batt for the i3 vs USB 3.0 & 5.5h battery for this one. I would rather upgrade the memory on the i3.

      • +13

Definitely, plus users should take into account the fact that the integrated graphics on the AMD Chip is a respectful amount better than the integrated graphics on the i3

      • You're right, didn't see this one had the 8Gb

  • Windows 10 in s mode what's the recommendation for this to switch to Windows 10 or leave in s mode, i take regardless of what method you prefer does not affect your warranty.
Do you get much devices with this method?

    • +7

You can switch it out of S mode with a single click in the Windows app store. Then it's back to normal Windows 10 without an impact on warranty or anything.

    • +1

And it is a free upgrade path. There is no cost to move from Windows S Home to Windows Home despite them calling it an 'upgrade' option.

I have purchased this laptop for home schooling addition to the home schoool/office. Fine for that purpose and FHD at this price point is great. Thanks OP.

  • Is this a better deal than the ipad/microsoft trade in deal? (for simple laptop user?)

    • +2

Of course surface if you have iPad 2 3 4 to trade

      • Seems like ipad 2 about $50 on gumtree :)

        • But only surface laptop 3 with bigger screen like this Acer. Surface laptop go is cheaper but not that screen size

  • Wifey is getting into this Cricut craze.. would this be good enough to run the software it needs? Seems like a great deal.

    • +1

More than enough power to run the software and also mid duty graphics design, $468 with Latitude Pay is an extremely good deal

  • +10

Good deal but boo Harvey Norman

    • Agree. OZB are not fans of HN, but then upvote many deals.

    I got the 14” model with 10th gen i3 & 8gb

    Keep in mind
    Touchpad is trash
    Cant charge with usb-c
    Battery life is below average

My model had backlid keyboard and IPS screen, not sure about this one.

    • +2

Sounds about right for a laptop in this price range. Can't be disappointed if the expectations are correct.

      • +1

yeah but keep in mind the 14" was last sold thru HN almost two years ago, ie. prior covid, for about $400

for $400 i'm willing to take a lot of negatives… there's also the 45% NTSC screen which is the worst screen I've ever seen on anything that isnt TN.

  • +1

Great laptop for 80% desktop / 20% mobile use. Acer is weak on build quality, battery life, weight and general finish so this is more an indoor device

    • +3

Not sure about this particular model but I got an Acer Spin and it has better build quality and battery life than the Dell it replaced or the HP that tried to replace it.

Haven't had an issue with it in 3 years, but then again this model will likely have cheap creaky plastic compared to the metal finish I've got.

  • Seems a decent deal (but HN bad)

If you want an Ryzen 5 5th gen this is $400 more comes with a nice 512GB SSD too. Just can't bring myself to post xD

    • +2

$900 is a big difference to $500 though and this has the same issues all Aspire 5s have…

      1x USB 2.0, 1x USB 3.2 (Type C, Gen1), 2x USB3.2 Gen 1, HDMI, RJ45

Still gen 1 type c usb and that 45% ntsc screen

i bought that acer swift 3x for $800 and its miles above this trash… granted i did buy that 14" one for $400 pre covid and for $400 you can accept a lot of bad stuff but for $800 i wouldnt

      • Yeah it's $400 to quadruple the storage space and upgrade the processor 2 generations and up 1 tier.

You can't expect an entirely new build with no faults for that - you'd have to spend easily upwards of $1k

      • Depends on how you use it (if you have main powerful desktop), it would be only few meters above/below ;) the metric system was introduced 1795.
40cm diagonal vs 36cm screen is KMs above :)

        • He also used the American pejorative of “trash” so he’s either from U.S. in which case don’t be so harsh on the poor Yank ;-) or he’s been corrupted by watching too many American Let’s Players/streamers in which case have at it! >:-)

  • +3

Bought this laptop, its perfect for general web browsing, checking emails, watching youtube, using Microsoft office ect. Nice build quality and lightweight. SSD gives it fast boot times and responsiveness. Obviously not at all for gaming or any type of editing/content creation but very good for general use at this price point.

    • What's the monitor like? Is it IPS?

      • Picked up mine this afternoon. I think it is just TN panel. Don't know the nits in brightness but quite bright indoor.

        • Thank you

    • how is it for watching movies/streamed content? whats the screen like?

  • Will this be OK for zoom meetings for skoolkids, and doing their browser based stuff?
I ask because my kid's been borrowing my surface laptop 3 13", and for some reason these things make the fan run crazy loud. He's got maybe 4-5 tabs open, 1 of them the skool version of zoom, but we couldn't work out why it's running hot.

    • It should handle all these tasks easily.

That only received 24 upvotes (now 25). Just goes to show if the title is too long members won't read it all.

      • members won't read it all.

Yeah they only read the Lenovo

You lost me at Acer. Every gadget of theirs I've owned hasn't served me well.

  • +2

Acer AND hardly normal, no thanks

  • Ordered, thanks OP.

  • This got a backlit keyboard?

    • No

  • Does anyone know if the SSD can be changed out for bigger size?

    • +1

Yes, you can install a bigger size SSD. Also comes with screws for extra storage devices.

      • Cheers.

  • This is $20 but no stock online. Good luck in case you find any Officeworks store stock. Might help someone.

Got one from HN Bundall yesterday-for $498, I’m very happy with it.

Been playing Minecraft, Grim Fandango Remastered and Roblox on mine.

Switched my Aspire 3 out of S-mode so I could run Photoshop, CorelDRAW and Lightroom.

  • $799 now.

  • Back down to $698

  • Thanks OP - I bought one and opened the cover. The maximum memory is either 12GB or 20GB.
It comes with 4GB soldered RAM plus 4GB module.
Has anyone tried a 16GB module for 20GB total RAM?
