Will people still buy this now? Since there are a few cheap tablet with ICS already.

Like the Hyundai tablet posted before.

    • +9

it was probably a bargain a few months back, but not anymore with all the tablets prices dropping like mad right now.

      • +2

the resistive touch makes me feel 'errr'…

    • +5

does the hyundai tablet come with 3g, bluetooth and gps?

      i don't think it does.

    • +2

Note that the mytab has some free credit, and more importantly built in 3G so you can easily use it on the run.

It may also be possible to get internet on the Hyundai by sharing the internet on your smartphone: http://www.androidsim.net/2011/08/how-to-35-connecting-to-ad… (It is annoying that Google filters out adhoc networks so you have to resort to this fiddling). It is also possible to buy a 3G dongle for the mytab but then it would cost more than $100 and be less convenient to carry.

Other than this, the Hyundai does seem a much better tablet, however.

MyTab - now there's a blast from the past

    • +12

      Did yours explode too?

  • +3

Is this the same one that was the same price 12 months ago?

    • +1

Yes, that is why not worth now.

    • must agree. bargain if post 6 months ago.

  • +1

My wife still uses hers and yep, they were $99 last year.

Getting a bit long in the tooth now - ships with Android 2.1!

  • +1

still a resistive screen, not great value compared to other chinese tablets nowadays

  • +3

cannot believe this is still 99. I would pay no more than 49 for it.

  • Considering it has $25 worth of credit.. Its a nice value device… I brought 4 back when they were on sale leat year… Was a nice little toy :) But as the price points out… Its a cheap entry level tablet..

But after the update to ANdroid.. Does the job for basic user..

  • Well mine has served me well but yeah getting on now, surprised they're still around.
Still have a upvote for being my first big post :)

  • $99 again, one year ago was a good price, but not for now…

  • Anyone remember this?

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/48502

    Those were the days…

  • +2

I think a better price would be $49, given it is essentially disposable technology. Any good as a portable media player for car trips?

    • +3

      Screen is pretty lo-res…

      • +1

Still good enough resolution for watching videos on. It's basically the same res as DVD. Dunno if the CPU is good enough though…

        • You reckon? I cant look at videos on my wifes one.
Way too grainy, you can see individual pixels

        • +1

$99 tab and you complain that it is not 1080P high res with quadraphonic sound… LOL
Come on guys… it's $99 !! And for that it is a bargain toy.
Next thing you will be complaining that the buttons are not 24 carat gold. LOL

        • At least this one has buttons - as compared to the recently posted "Hyundai-ish" A7 wifi-only 7incher.

        • +1

Agree with KT. The video quality is bad and the CPU inside is so weak that in order to play "low resolution AVI (divx)" without having video and audio out of sync all the time, I had to use a player and select "low resolution mode" or some sort of mode which allows skip frames.

Showing people photos taken on my OLD 8MP camera is also bad. Each photo takes a while to load and it tried to load progressively - and I had to tell people to pause 2 seconds before flip to the next photo, otherwise all photos look very blurry.

Was really happy when I got rid of it though. Didn't lose much money.

        • I swear, some of these guys would still whinge if Optus was paying them $99 to take it away!!!

      • +2

Not complaining at all, accurately describing.
I bought if for my wife last year and she's fine with it but time moves on and technology moves up.
It was the same price $99 ergo ought to be a bit cheaper now.

  • +1

I paid $130 for this thing. Its OK, don't expect too much from it, 3g is good though.

  • +1

ony has a 600mhz cpu :( dont know where they got the idea of high spec

    • CM7 + OC to 789MHz (~30%) and stable. It's no Prime, but has its uses.

  • +1

This has full phone function. Compared to other mobile phones, $99 is still cheap.

  • +13

I can't be the only one still using the Optus MyTab that I got last year for $99. Got CM7.1 on it, and I am still using it every now and then for general browsing and tethering (to an Amaysim prepaid). Oh, and the agony of my kids when they try to play Angry Birds on it…

    • +2

Oh, and the agony of my kids when they try to play Angry Birds on it…

Eh? My kid loves playing Angry Birds on it. And a few other games.

    • +2

This is pretty much the cheapest 3G tablet in Australia that comes with free SIM + credit.

Also, this tablet has amazing battery life — you can browse on it for about 7-8 hours straight on a full charge. No other tablet or phone could do that!

      • Good battery life indeed. Throw in the bag and you get to catch up the latest deal from OzBargain wherever you go thanks to 3G (which I seem to be doing a lot these days — always waiting for kids to finish up their activities).

As of Angry Birds — the original one is barely playable, and Seasons/Rio are just too laggy. Together with resistive touch screen you can be sure the birds are flying in all random directions.

      • My battery is getting chewed by something, probably the shit wireless.

      • -6

the battery life is horrible and charging takes looooong time, even longer than my sgs2 phone.

    • Yeah I still use mine.
I find the wireless pretty shitty tho, my ipod touch smashes it in that contest.
Flicks on it are fine for those AirAsiaX flights.

    • I put CM7-point-something on mine too, definitely worth doing. I passed it down to my GF though when I grabbed a HP Touchpad.

    • +1

Currently keeping it permanently plugged into my stereo amp in the living room to wireless stream:

      • Jango for music direct from net
      • Gmote for music direct from PC
      • SoundWire for audio direct from PC
      • while controlling it from the couch through my phone with Tablet Remote.

Just need USB port plus 1080p decoding plus HDMI out, and it would make a sweet media player replacement! But that's what the Transformer Prime is for.

  • They still sell for > $100 used on eBay. Although I'm sure this deal will bring prices back down.

    • i was thinking of selling mine yesterday. good to know it is STILL popular. but imo, it is crap.

      • If it's crap, and since it's used I'll buy yours for $20!

        • if you are serious, you need a cold water shower to wake yourself up.

        • +2

          What, is $20 too much?
Hey, you said it's crap and it's used, so 20 bucks is an excellent price for crap. Would sell you mine for that price on a daily basis.

        • +1

          I'll offer $21

        • What? For my crap or for alwayseric's crap? If it's for mine you got a deal!

  • +1

Anyway, agree that it would be a bargain ~$60-$70 but same price as a year ago for those specs?
    No.

  • -7

    A piece of junk.

  • +3

very robust tablet and it's a joy to have around.
I managed to update the rom to CM 7 and overclocked the processor to 800 mhz with that I recon they are worth $99 as they do come with inbuild 3G capability.

  • Just to share some experience on MyTab. I bought 2 unit last year.
1 unit was return to Optus after a time consuming complain when the Battery indicator keep showing 100% causing the only way to charge it is to take off the battery every time before charging it.

The other one is working well until a few months ago when there is a green line(dead pixel) shows up and last week half of the screen was flickering.

In my opinion it was a good price as long as you are lucky enough not to get a defect one.

    • Take the one with the green pixel line back to an Optus store and get it changed. I had the same green-line fault with mine, and then a few months later the resistive screen acted weird and would only randomly respond to input. Optus replace it in a week. If you got yours are around the same time as mine, you've probably got a month or two of warranty left. Best to get it swapped now, before you're out of warranty.

  • +1

Think Optus replaced the manufacture ZTE with Dell the produce their next Tab. So they have been trying hard to clear the old stock, and still trying… Wonder how many they signed the contract for.

  • +4

Had mine since last July. Got it for $99, flashed it to CM7 and it still goes well.

Remember there is 3GB data included and 3 months expiry with this and the WiFi tethering (via 3G) works well if you use CM7 on it. I now have an Amaysim SIM in it on the 12 month 10GB deal and I continue to think it is good value. I cant compare to other models, but I would pay $99 again.

    • I would pay $99 again too, if I didn't have one already!
I raced out to get one last year. Mine is for free wifi while overseas (to keep in touch back home), and to read e-books on, also for travelling. And some games and music :o) Bargain!

    • +3

I bet you have never used one?

  • +1

What a difference ~8 months makes. Same deal minus the $25 credit, got 211 positive votes in July. Still seems a decent deal.

    • Actually that's the second time.
10 months ago from my original post in May with 212 votes and over 1000 comments!
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/45725
      My proudest Ozbargain moment!

    • It had the same credit back then. The 3GB over 3 months is the important part.

Still good value, and well supported with CM7.

  • +3

We got 2 of these last year.. Value for money is hard to beat. GPS, WiFi, Tethering, etc, …. Runs the sat nav program well.
We take them with us travelling and have been great for on the move communication.
As for it being a resistive screen… it works great, far better than my expensive droid phone with capacitive screen. Don't assess 100% by specs… or people that give advice purely based on what they have read and have never touched one.
There are many out there that are still very happy with this feature packed well made little gadget.

  • +1

    A-GPS
    fast dual-band 3G modem (10.2Mbps HSDPA - 900 & 2100)
wifi hotspot (via manufacturer's firmware update to Android 2.2)
    quad-band GSM (850, 900, 1800 & 1900)
    complete phone functionality
    freely unlockable

    excellent 3,400mAh Li-Ion battery
    good build quality

under $100 delivered (including 3GB data and call credit)

    This is still great value.

PLEASE show me where I can do better with inbuilt 3G???
    - or even just with GPS??? - let alone both!

    • Its the key bit that most don't realise.

Most of the low cost tablets you can buy lack one or more of the usual sensors you get with a smartphone. Maybe its no 3G, or no GPS, or no camera, or no compass. Sure the processor is low, and so is the screen resolution, but if you need the sensors in a tablet package, its still hard to match.

    • Hi sw,

Can you please confirm how the free unlocking works? I had a chat to the Optus rep and he mentioned that you have to recharge $100 and they will unlock it, hence making it a $200 tablet.

      • Whirlpool wiki has pretty comprehensive info on this tablet including where to get it unlocked…

        http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/zte_tablet_v9_optus

      • Basically these products rely on the OS recognising that it is locked. Change the OS (as you are very likely to do) and the lock disappears.

Otherwise there are calculators out there.

        • Easiest method - I remember doing it several months ago. Download 'Droidgram Blade Unlock'. Still free on the Android market.

    • Correction to this earlier post of mine above;

      "fast dual-band 3G modem (10.2Mbps HSDPA - 900 & 2100)"

These details are the specs on gsmarena.com however the specs on the maufacturers Australian website state that this is actually tri-band 3G. so should read:

      "fast tri-band 3G modem (10.2Mbps HSDPA - 900, 1900 & 2100)"

source: http://www.zte.com.au/optus/V9.htm (refer to specs under "Details" tab

  • +4

    http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices/zte-v9

I bought one of these last year and it kicks ass. Still a bargain

    • +3

Same for me - the best $99 I have ever spent on technology

  • Screen is pretty washed out and it's resistive.

But which tablet gives you an in-built GPS and 3G modem for $99?

PS: I've seen this complete with box at several Cash Converters for $70 or so.

  • +1

"The Optus My Tab is a high-spec entry level tablet"……

LMAO when you see 'high-spec' and 'entry level' at the same time, hahahahahahahahahahaha~

  • aw man! the good old days when we were all fighting to get one of these~

    • Sorry, pressed the - sign by mistake. meant to click on +. hard to do it on the phone while the train is in motion lol

  • +2

I have been using GPS in car after my TOMTOM crashed, and playing games, checking email & ozbargain, making phone calls in bed. And after dropping on floor a couple of times, it still work well. I have an Acer A501 but rarely use it. Still love this handy tough baby, cannot think of any other tab can perform all of these tasks. Give it a + after nearly one year experience.

    • Hey what program do you use for the gps. I have cm7 and tried co pilot live. Didn't seem to work 100 percent.

  • it seems not available, the page shows 'no content item selected '??

    • Looks like it's expired — no longer on Optus' website.

      • Ozbargain'ed….AGAIN!

  • got this last year for the same price. As someone else said, its proably should be $49 now. Its OK but by no means is this smooth, and great to use. Especially if you own an iphone. BUT for the price, it plays back SOME videos very well, and others glitchy, and its fine for ebooks, pdfs and web browsing is ok if you download Opera mini. PLUS you can make calls which is funny cause its so big.

  • For those in the know, can I use something like this without a sim card in it? I really don't want to have 3G (I'm a tightwad), just want the ability to play movies, read books, and use wi-fi.

    • +2

Yes it works fine without the sim

  • Discontinued product - haven't see one before but sounds like a good price for a 7" tab with some decent connectivity.

  • +1

I was still able to buy one of these this afternoon through this link- not sure if it will work for everyone…

    https://www.optus.com.au/shop/Shopping-Cart?action=addToCart…

    • Works for me

      • Yep works for me too… I wont be purchasing one tho ivea already got too many gadgets :/ Mainly thanks to OzB

    • I ordered one with your link, too. After completing the order I tried again for a friend and then it did not work. Very strange and miraculous. :-)

    • Worked for me, thanks!

  • Perfect for the kids

  • Brilliant, thank for the link. Worked a charm :)

  • If you add in inflation which is somewhere around 3%, the price has actually come down from a few months back!

P.S. Is the Android rootable? I mean the rom.

    • +2

      P.S. Is the Android rootable?

Yes, & Cyanogen mod runs very nicely on these.

  • I've got friends & family members with these, they wouldn't trade them for the world. The advantages of 3g in a tab cannot be underestimated; that & $25 credit with free unlocking makes them still bargain-worthy at $99 ($74 really) IMHO! :)

FWIW, I reckon the resistive screen in these is one of the better ones on the market…sure it's not capacitive, but it's nothing like the old crappy resistive screens. It is perfectly serviceable!

  • This was a great tablet but in the end I had no use for it, best thing was installing CyanogenMod and playing around with settings, was able to clock mine to about 780mhz (unstable) and usually left it at about 650-690.

In the end I sold it for $100!

  • Those who bought today will be happy if they can google the steps to installing Cyanogenmod7.
It's handy as an extra internet device and works well as a portable GPS if you need one, using Google Navigation. Since it's unlocked when rooted and is quadband, it's a great option if you are OS on holiday and could use a wifi/3G/navigation device with a larger screen than your phone.

Plus it's a simple internet/mail device for anyone to use. Anyone given theirs to an elderly relative or friend so that they have internet access?

    • yep ive done this, and they picked it up very quickly. Wifi is always on so they never miss an email (much easier than them logging on the computer just to check emails). It shouldn't be underestimated its quite a good device. There is an offical upgrade to 2.2 and i think that makes it very usable, without the need to root etc. 2.1 was definately a bit laggy/clunky.
So if you have elderly parents/family this is a very good option to consider.

  • I'm looking for a tablet to have a muck around with.. is this as cheap as it'll get?

  • -1

i bought one, and its really not worth getting, its too damn slow.
