[NSW] Kids Online Coding Bootcamps, Free with Creative Kids Voucher @ Hello World

50

Hi OzBargainers,

I'm from Hello World, an online college providing accessible tech education for the next generation.

Our online kids coding bootcamps are coming up for the term three holidays. If you live in NSW, these are 100% free with a Creative Kids voucher (only $100, otherwise).

1. Coder Bootcamp

This is our beginner coding bootcamp, for students of all ages.

Make a classic Space Invaders game. Save your home planet. And learn visual coding along the way.

2. Apprentice Bootcamp

This is our intermediate bootcamp, for students of all ages.

Make a classic Space Invaders game. Save your home planet. And learn Javascript along the way.

Only 5 students per class, so places are limited. Happy coding!

  • Hi OP,

My son (11) is keen to learn a full python instead of the Visual Programming (he did similar course a few times and he lost interest very quickly).
Do yoou offer such course tailored for kids?

    Thanks

    • Hi there,

Yes, we offer Python courses during our full terms (but not in these bootcamps). For an intermediate student like your son, our Coder Apprentice course would be perfect. Students build a chatbot that talks like a pirate, and learn Python along the way.

If he's really interested, he won't need a class, just get him a good book and let him work it out for himself.

Working out how to do things independently is one of the best skills to have as a programmer…

      • imho it works for adults. To kick off his curiosity, I find it necessary to get a good pointer.
Atm he is building bots on Discord because he use it with friends.
He is surrounded with materials but without trigger to kick off his curiosity I find it hard to start the snowball.

Sit down with him and do it together.

          That's what I did with my kids…

              @cloud68: You're welcome…

I had great fun helping my kids out with coding during the school holidays when they started to learn it…
Then they had great fun correcting their teachers when they did it in school…

      • Agreed. If a student can teach themselves, then by all means, they should do that. But if they need a real person guiding them through the material and mentoring them on the subject, then a modest investment in an instructor-led course may have a better outcome. People learn differently.

Definitely learn something real like Python or C. JavaScript and all web developers are crap. No real development skill, just using frameworks.

Yep, my kids learned the basics using Scratch. Now I'm trying to get them into python…

    • May be a bit basic but have a look at https://codecombat.com/

  • is there anything similar in VIC your aware of ? (as in the discount?)

    • Sorry, I'm not aware of a government rebate program like Creative Kids in Victoria, and we only accept Creative Kids vouchers at the moment.

    • We love freeCodeCamp! Any resource that spreads knowledge is excellent in our books.

That said, there's a big difference between freeCodeCamp and our courses. freeCodeCamp offers self-paced courses, but we focus on guided learning, with real tutors delivering all of our courses and bootcamps on Zoom, in real-time. We also have a low student-to-teacher ratio (5:1) to ensure that all students get the best learning experience.

  • If it's online why only NSW?

It's not only for NSW — registrations are open to anyone from Australia or anywhere in the world. (The course schedules are in the AEST timezone.)

But because the promotion/discount is specific to NSW (ie. the Creative Kids voucher), we thought it best to use the NSW label to be extra clear.

If it's online why only NSW?

If you're from NSW, the course is $100
If you're in VIC, the course is $200.

      Sounds discriminatory to me…
