Man…. a 50" smart tv from a reputable brand selling for under $700. Bloody amazing!
I bought my 50" Panasonic a few years ago for $2,500 (a "bargain").
They are so cheap now its depressing :(.

    • -4

Er, it must have been more than a "few" years ago if you paid that much. In 2008, 50" Panas were going for around $1999 with interest free for 2 years from H.N. (effectively around $1750 or so when you factor in the interest free).

December 2005 - Pioneer 50" HD Plasma. Single HDMI input

        $7300.00

        Aaaarrrghhh!

June 2000 - Sony 42" 1024x1024 plasma monitor a bargain at $12,500. Still have it, use it every day and its working fine, apart from some brightness drop.

With comments like that, it's you who's gonna be off display from this forum by Q2. Do you really think the average TV buyer will be able to afford first-generation consumer OLED panels? There'll be plenty of TVs like this dominating retail displays until economies-of-scale kick in for OLED and they get competitive pricing. That will take a while.

      • True but I doubt it will take a while, more competition would bring down prices. It has in the past and will again :D

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLED

"The biggest technical problem for OLEDs was the limited lifetime of the organic materials.[56] In particular, blue OLEDs historically have had a lifetime of around 14,000 hours to half original brightness (five years at 8 hours a day) when used for flat-panel displays."

Until manufacturers prove they have solved the blue colour lifespan problem I would be wary of paying premium prices for large OLED displays. 14k hours is a fair bit, but some uses would render the display unwatchable well within 2 years. Think pub TVs, information displays at train stations, airports, etc.

looks like an awsome price. Aldi price, 'real' branded product (not sharp/hitachi/telefunken 'soldout to cheap chinese' brands).

    • +5

      Sharp? You mean Sanyo?

That looks like an awesome deal. Paid $750 for a LG 50" 720p TV a year ago. Too soon to upgrade…or is it…

    • +5

Olympics Year…Wait for a TV sales frenzy.

  • Wasn't there an LG 55" plasma on here a while ago for about $650? Is this one better? In what areas?

    • +4

      LG = shit panels

  • I just got this yesterday, for an extra 30 bucks you can get an extended warranty(2 years extra on top of it's one year warranty) if that tickles your fancy

  • +1

Wow!! these TVs keep on getting cheaper and cheaper! Surely they are getting to the threshold of how low they can get.. I bought my Pana 50 inch HD plasma 4 years ago for $1400 (unheard of bargain back then) and look at them now!!

Good price but I wouldnt want to buy a Panasonic Plasma anymore.. This just recently happened our my cousins plasma:

Massive big black line only after 3-4yrs

    • -1

3-4yrs is probably the average life of a tv now.

      • +3

friend of mine has a plasma. early panasonic from 5 going on 6 years. not a single problem.

      • If you had paid probably $2-$3k for one back then, you would expect a decent lifetime out of it.

Mine died after less than 3 years, I wasn't happy. Had it replaced through JB extended warranty, but it was a real hassle and took 3 months to get a replacement. Personally I won't be buying from JB again.

Even without the black line, that picture quality is atrocious. Makes me super glad I still have a CRT.

      • nothing to do with the photography of course…

Enough with the Trinitron dude, you should marry the thing if you love it so much! :p

I bought one of these tv's last year..Great PQ ! 2 things which drives me batty with it is it's hit and miss media file playback through the usb port and when you have connected your external drive to the usb port it displays the contents in one big garbled mess instead of an organised structure. Was hoping Panasonic would've released a firmeware update to fix these issues but being an older tv now dare say they've dropped support for it :(

    Nice price but no 3d?

    • +6

what would you want to view in 3d?

    • -1

Movies? I've got over 20 3D movies and sure I don't watch them all the time, but it is still a good feature to have.

  • can you log onto your youtube account on this TV

    • Nope.

    • DNLA support though, so use your android phone, install media streaming software, send and control youtube from your phone

  • Bought one of these TVs last year for $730, great TV for a great price.

  • -2

Pretty sure I saw this at Big W for under 500 a month or two ago.

    • +2

Doubt it, the one you saw was most likely a 720p version, still decent but for a 50" TV full HD is better.

    • +3

You're probably thinking of the 42" version which was $498 at Big W.

Although this is cheap but the true upgrade is the soon to come AMOLED TV.

Picked this up from JB southside Brisbane "hyperdome" for grandfather $595. Only hassle I can't show receipt - oldies keep reciepts - so I can't scan and show.

    Nice TV!!
