$200 to change oil and something else inexpensive and put a stamp on your logbook.

A good private mechanic won't charge you more than $100 for all that, cheaper if you source the oil and oil filter yourself.

    • Not everyone needs just oil done.
I'm also having coolant, plugs and gearbox service done this week. Bit more than $100.

Yeah still cheaper at the private mechanic mate.

          That's why I'm going to a non-franchise lol

        • Turned out to be $700 at the private mechanic.

    • Lucky you. Oil and filter for my Colorado cost more than $100.

      • Maybe try looking out for oil deals at SCA/Repco/Autobarn.

For my car, I got Penrite 5W-40 and that was more expensive than Castrol 5W-30 (oil for my previous car). So just a different oil drove the service cost up by about $20-$30.

Mechanic labour shouldn’t be more than $50-$80 (mine charges $50 regardless of what car for an oil change, but he is a family mechanic)

I service my car myself. A few days ago I bought 6l Penrite Enviro+ 5W-40 (only Penrite oil suitable for my car, I need dexos2) for $62 on a special at Repco + $21 for the filter. At normal prices the consumables are more than $100. I used to had a Commie, $30 was enough for the oil and filter.

          • @Cupa Bundy Drinker: Yeah, can easily save money on almost any repair or service with a car just by being smart and premeditating.
Of course, most people on ozb are not the type to simply walk into SCA and buy their oil like that unless there is some emergency.

    • My local mechanic charges 260 for a service while ford charges 355.

So not all local mechanics charge less than 200

Exactly like the first comment here. Lots of individual mechanics will charge well less than $200 for a log book service. Don't pay for inflated prices like these.

PLeased that my local Bridgestone isn't listed, so II'm not tempted to use them.
They are OK for tyres, but the workshop and staff are a little on the agricultural side.

  • Tried AutoGuru to get estimates, quite expensive indeed for small/medium tyre garage shops, if they had dealer servicing options that would have been great !
