"Deal of the day" (ends in 8 days) - as usual not the cheapest it's been but sadly not a bad price (~$30/TB) for the current times.

Expect delayed shipping if strikes go ahead, etc.

I haven't tried it personally but apparently you can get an AU power adapter from WD if this doesn't come with an international power adapter.

    $30.13 / TB (Free shipping)

Is under $25/TB still the magic number? Or have HDD's gone the way of GPUs?

      • +1

I thought $20/TB was the magic number. But $25/TB is probably a steal these days considering the current market

      • You can get $25/TB with the 4tb drives at JB Hifi. But limited to 4TB though :-( And probably SMR (if that matters to you)

  • I'm more concerning about what HDD inside.

    Anyone know?

    • +3

Usually a white-labelled drive, essentially similar to a WD Red of the same capacity when buying 8TB or higher. Perfect for NAS.

External WD's of less than 8GB often have SMR drives which are not very suitable for NAS or storage array applications.

If you want more details or specific drive codes or revisions being seen, I would suggest checking recent posts within the Datahoarders subreddit.

      Edit: clarity.

I always got the EMFZ ones (for both 12TB/14TB shipped from US and UK) but again, that's almost 1y ago.

    • Probably EMAZ, thats what I got

    • Ordered mine on the 12th July from Amazon UK

Looks like a good way to get an HDD for your NAS or PC. Apparently it uses a slowed down enterprise version HDD.

Besides, you might need to tape the 3.3v pin.

This is a year old, WD could have put banana's in them now for all we know.
Can be a bit of a lucky draw, I think the Seagate ones are a bit more reliable with whats inside.

      • +1

seagate reliable? now there's an oxymoron.

  • Shuckable?

  • This should be legit…
Comparing the 14TB seagate one on Amazon in the previous post, 6TB in the end :(

So damn missing the time ~$24/TB

  • Has WD deployed SMR drives into their 12TB Elements offerings ?

    • Not that I know of. As of beginning of 2021, the 8TB and smaller were SMR if they were from WD Elements drive. I have the 10TB and 18TB, both of which are CMR. So I expect the 12TB Element to also be CMR.

      • I don’t believe WD or Seagate make SMR above 8tb… yet.

        • so 8tb elements are now SMR?

          • +1

@thrillho556: Looking at it, I can’t actually see a 8tb WD SMR drive so you’re probably pretty safe there - the WD Elements 8tb I got a couple of years ago had the usual white label CMR drives in them, but the Seagate 8tb I bought around the same time had an Archive/Barracuda Compute in it.

    For WD Elements sourced from:

UK/EU - Models ref EESN - Usually come with universal plugs/cable/adapters including AU
AU/NZ - Models ref AESN - Usually come with universal plugs/cable/adapters including AU
US/CA - Models ref NESN - Only come with plugs/cable/adapters fir the North American market - i.e. USA and Canada. Register online a.s.a.p with WD.com and contact the Support phone number for Australia. Quote the Model/Serial number and WD will dispatch to you the appropriate plugs/cable/adapters for Australia. They are normally fairly quick (Pre COVID-19) and have received them from Asia within a few days.

If you can't wait, go to Jaycar/Bunnings and see if you can purchase an appropriate adapter. (Most retail outlets ONLY sell adaptors for AU travellers going overseas to charge phone, use hair driers, electric razors etc. and NOT the other way around. If you can't find the appropriate adapter, I can recommend the Korjo brand. An Australian business based in Hawthorn, Vic.

They are preferable as they can advise you which adapter is most suitable for your device's point of origin. Due to earthing of the EU/UK models, you would need to be careful.

Disclosure. I am NOT associated with Korjo in any way or form. Just found their range of products to be most appropriate and are reasonably priced. Have been using their products for years without any problems.

These days, I just register device with WD, contact their support and wait for appropriate cable/adapter to arrive in mail. I have done this many times and always found WD very helpful in his regard.

You can get a free AU power plug from WD by creating an online account.

    • The earthing is also only for the power adapter. The drive casing itself has only + and - connections, so there is no earthing to the drive body.

Maybe OP can add this in the description …

    • @xecutor … it's 'kismet' … just posted similar advice. I endorse your advice 100% :)

Will do shortly, on mobile this second but thanks for finding that!

    • +1

      Done :)

  • For those of you who shucked these drives for use in a NAS, does that mean the drive is no longer under warranty since it is being removed from the casing? Just wondering if I should get one for my NAS also.

    • +3

@jeeg. These are pretty reliable drives (let's not get caught up in the ridiculous debate re WD vs Seagate), however if you keep your case intact and without any sign of tampering you may be able to claim warranty support. I have seen many unsupported claims that warranty is okay, but of course that varies from country to country and always treat with a degree of scepticism.

      • +1

Backblaze are a pretty trustworthy source of real world drive data: https://www.backblaze.com/b2/hard-drive-test-data.html

      • is it really possible to remove the drive from the casing without signs of tampering? I would imagine there are seals at the screws or stickers of some sort?

  • +7

geez last time I bought one of these (Nov 2020) it was $281… thanks so much Chia mining, you suck as much as other speculative mining schemes.

    • At that time you could get the 14TB for $299.41 ($21.39/TB), though as I already have 2x 10TB parity drives, I just got another 10TB for $239, expecting the 14TB to come down in price, not go up…

      • yeah I missed out on the 14TB, must have sold out at the time. I used the 12TB to upgrade my Synology and replace the 4TB WDs which I had fail after 35,000 hours of use.

  • shuckable?

    • Unless they've drastically changed the WD Elements design, should be pretty easy to shuck (although harder if you're careful about the plastic pins for possible future warranty)

      • +8

If you ever have a warranty claim on a shucked drive then you tell them it was "removed from the case for troubleshooting, data recovery and diagnostics; and to rule out USB to SATA faults"

Support won't mind as it's one less fault-test for them - they'd be doing the same thing anyway

        • +1

That's a good tip to know!

  • Do you get free shipping for brand new amazon accounts (no prime)?

    • +1

Brand new Amazon account can get free prime trial.
Otherwise just pay $6.99 for 1m month prime, you can consider it a lower shipping fee.
      Without prime no free shipping.

  • Mine arrived DOA
    Returning :(

    • Mine's due for delivery today so I'll reply back as to how it goes, sorry you got a bad unit though!

      • Well it got delivered, a couple of days late because of the parcel backlog - it at least starts up using the adapter from the last Seagate I ordered, running extended tests on it now…
