i have the older model and ink cost a fortune. buying off brand ink to save money is also a mistake, the colours don't come out as good. now i use the colour sparingly. black is black, so i buy off brand ink for that. the off brand black doesn't have that bold pop of colour of the epson brand, but i can live with that since i usually print a bunch of stuff that doesn't have to be immaculate.

    • +1

Most inkjets use colour to make black text 'pop', even when you select B&W printing.
I do hear though not all generic inks are the same, apparently there are some good ones.

    • Ops, just ordered off brand ones from ink station!

    • Cheap entry price, the sting is in the replacement ink.

    • +2

Ditch it. But a laser printer
I got a laser for printing black and white and now I don't even think about printing anymore because it is so cheap

Friends don't let friends buy ink printers

Laser is the way to go

    • +11

100%. I'm never buying ink again

    • +9

Lol, each to their own. Laser is great until the Drum needs replacing.
Lasers are great for bulk printing, but if time isn't an issue generally inkjet quality for pictures is better, but agree can't beat lasers for B&W, especially fonts\text.

      • +1

        Find drums refill on Ebay.

    • Works for me. I primarily got mine for scanning receipts at tax time. Multi functions work out cheaper standalone scanners. As a bonus on the very rare occasion I actually need to print out a form I have that functionality.

      • +5

Use Adobe scan app on your phone. Much faster and super easy.

        • i use the one built into google drive… never heard of the adobe scan app? Is it any good?

          • @GuniGuGu: Very very good in my opinion

        • It isn't faster if you need to scan a 20 page double sided document.

    • +1

Check out ink tank. Best of both worlds

    • +1

What is the generally accepted ozbargain approved model of laser in 2021. More interested in quality than price. TIA.

    • Lazer is the powder right?

    • I mean it depends. I barely ever use my printer so inkjet is adequate for me. It would be a different story if you used it every day though.

      • +2

        I feel differently.
Every time I've owned an Inkjet, Ive used it very sporadically, so when it comes to use it again, the ink cartridge has dried up.

        No such problem with Lasers.

  • Anyone know what the difference/s are between this and 2750 ?

I have the 2750 and one of the hinges is broken for the glass scanner lid.

And inks are due for replacement soon. might as well buy a brand new un !

+1 for not buying an inkjet printer.
I bought one of these WF printers 3 or 4 years ago.
The printer likes to use colour really fast - tried the genuine cartridges about 2 or 3 times, but that was way expensive.
(It was using like a thirsty camel drinking water) and this was for the odd school printout.
Compatible cartridges were okay, but in the end the nozzles got stuck/things dried out, couldn't be revived.
Will never buy an Epsom again.

I got a brother colour laser now - still nowhere near as good as the old HP colour laserjet I had many many years ago that was pre-Windows 10 (and wouldn't work with it).
Anyway, the brother menu has an option to reset the pagecount on an existing toner.
That means I can keep printing black pages when CMY are empty.
    Works for me.

    • +2

I dont know why you are getting neg for telling the truth.

      • +4

Big Toner have gotten to them.

Had EPSON firmware update brick my multifunction at the start of this year. Cannot use off-brand ink any longer. It does not detect it. Also, won't let you use any of the other features because the start up sequence of the printer won't get past the printer ink error. If anyone has had this problem and fixed it (without buying $300+ of "genuine ink"), would be keen to hear what you did. Cheers.

    • Scary! I should check my off brand ink but it will dry out I’m sure if I open it.

    • Yep. My Epson bricked itself as well. Went with a Brother laser from a deal on here and much happier with it. Don't have to change the ink cartridges every time I print like I did with the ink jet.

Bulldust, a FULL set of Original ink for this printer is < $70 from officeworks, instant tax claim for most. Epson and Amazon often have discounts and that is not even searching for sales.

    • +1

      That's another lesson.
Follow the general rule of thumb - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" - that means do not upgrade any firmware ever.
If the printer works, then leave it alone, most firmware updates would simply block 3rd party supplies.

      • Exactly what happened to mine. It's disgraceful behaviour from Epson in my opinion. Do not upgrade the firmware.

  • +1

I've only ever seen Brother printers on OzBargain. I wouldn't buy anything other than the Brother brand because the OzBargain community knows what's what! :)

  • +2

ink jet printer should have not place on ozbargain. They are very expense in the long run and detrimental to the environment.

  • Avoid these WF-2xxx, they are just wasting ink and money. Get WF-3xxx or higher models that can take big cartridges and CISS; their printer head is much more durable.

    Inkjet

  • +2

Can't find a good price atm, but I strongly recommend laser printers even if it's just mono (black ink).

I've had the included partial toner cartridge that came with my $100 Brother laser from Officeworks for 3 years. Third party replacement I got for when it runs out was $15 for 5 years worth. Laser doesn't need to waste it's ink by design.

  • +1

I had a WF-3620 a few years ago. Had everything I needed (double sided scanning, printing, low idle energy use, easy to use internet functions, etc.) except that the inks were really really expensive. And, since I was printing sparingly, it got ink clogged every time I needed it. Then all of a sudden, it just died. Wouldn't power up. Found the same issue with another one I found on a kerbside :) I now have a few ink cartridges lying around :( Bought an OKI laser colour, interface looks like from the 19th century and power hungry even on idle but never misses a beat. Just put some third party toner and cant tell the difference.

    • Yep. Me too. Inks dry out and you have to clean clean clean to get working.
      OKI is the way.

  • I have this for the scanner. Barely print at all, but when I print once in a blue moon… it complains about lack of ink. So I wouldn't buy it if you had to print a lot. Laser all the way.

As for the scanner, it works fine but if you use the document feeder a lot then dust can sometimes gets stuck in there. You end up with lines through the scan, if that bothers you.

  • back to $128 now :(

  • +2

Apparently the inkjet ink is more expensive than gold in weight.

  • +1

Better to spend money on their ecotank range. One refill prints 6000 pages and them refill costs only $60-70. Saves lot of money in the long run.

    • +1

Yes, I used to work at Officeworks and the cheap printers you have to come in for $150 ink every 200 pages.

    • I originally thought the same, however EcoTank print quality is very very ordinary and prone to spillage.
The entry models at $500 don't even do auto-duplex, manual double-sided printing. If you print the volume that requires ET then why would you not go Laser?

Low volume, but regular = Inkjet
Low volume but occasional = Laser (inkjets dry out)
      High Volume = Laser

High print volumes and Inkjets are just not a good match.

      • I have been using ET-2710 for almost a year now. I bought it for just over $300. I have done more than 3000 prints, no issues so far. Only issue I get is nozzle clogging if I don't use it for 3-4 days, but a head cleaning function quickly fixes that. We have different use cases in our house so laser printer is not suitable. My wife does lot of craft printing, I print photos sometimes and of course document printing. I find quality quite decent for a consumer printer. For better quality I will need to spend a lot more.

  • The Epson 4830 is good, was about $180 off Amazon.

  • Harvey norman has $50 cashback on this, that with a price match would of been good!

  • I would suggest stay away from Epson printers. Not reliable at all in my experience

  • Interesting fact, inkjet cartridges are georestricted (at least they are for Canon).

  • What about the Brother Inkvestment type printers? It seems they have technology that prevents ink from drying out

  • So what what price point does quality in MFD printers start? $500?

I mean so ink doesn't run out everytime you go to use it, doesn't take 10 mins to warm up etc..

  • Can any recommend a good laser printer for home office ? Mono and color options. Will take a pick!
