Can't believe I spent $3000 for the Intel Macbook Pro 2020 with 1 TB SSD. Bloody Apple

    • 13" ?

    • I think everyone that purchased a MacBook in 2020 is pissed!

      • +8

No, I like the Intel CPU because the M1 is giving me too many software compatibility issues but the price was absurd. Everyone likes to boast about how x86 apps will run fine on the M1 but they never have any experience with it.

Rosetta 2 is not all its made out to be but it's great for the average user!!!!!

        • +1

Which applications dont work well? A lot dont work native but rosetta translation seems to work quite well ive heard for general users. Native support for ARM m1 is also growing so i cant see it being much of an issue in the near future. Other than games of course.

        • have you experienced both intel and m1? I had intel which luckily died and i got a full refund to buy a new m1 - won't ever go back to intel!

          • @cauilfield: Intel is my personal Macbook, M1 is my work one. I also have a Windows Laptop for all the CAD stuff.
However, if given the choice, I would give away the Intel one for an M1.

Run Parrallels, it runs Win10 Arms perfectly

I just bought a MBP M1 on Monday.
Upgraded from a 2012 Macbook Pro.
        I'm over the damn moon!

I upgraded because I'm not going to drop a small fortune on an M1 upgrade (if and when it ever gets released), and I do NOT want a 14" MBP. So I got in at the price point and specs that are perfect for me

      • +1

We’re lucky they don’t make us pay more for the m1. It cost less to produce to them so it’s fair enough I guess. But yeah if you bought intel in 2019 or 2020 it’s (profanity). Even if you sell it their value is plummeting

        • +1

It certainly costs less to them as they don't have to pay Intel, but my guess re the big price difference is that they want to fill the market with these so that developers can't ignore arm as a low user audience and stretch out the transition period. Apple isn't shy about making big margins so my bet is that once the transition is over they will again be charging an arm and a leg

      • I bought the 2020 Intel 13" in August last year. Yeah, it would've been great to have the newer tech. But I needed a laptop urgently and I'm more than happy with the performance I've got now. As one slight advantage, I can also drive dual external screens (which the M1 can't do, currently).

So it's not all doom and gloom :)

    • I did buy it when it came out in 2020.

      • Hi I’m looking to buy an M1 pro or air, I’m not sure which to go, are you able to tell me what issues you’ve experienced? Thank you

        • Oh, I'm an engineer who uses all this custom software and CAD tools meant for Windows. Best not to use me as an example. I ENCOURAGE YOU TO BUY IT if you're a normal user or SW developer.

              Work

              • @Orico: I see. If you're using windows apps why not buy a windows device. I use a MBP for personal stuff and Dell Latitude 2-in-1 for work (9420). TB allows eGPU and 4k screens.

                • @lunchbox99: Your workplace sounds supportive. Mine is an affluent company full of cheapskate managers that don't mind spending $100k+ on tooling but go nuts every time i try and order a fancy laptop.

                  • @Orico: That's crazy if your primary work equipment is a laptop. I replace my teams computers as soon as they are out of warranty (4yr onsite). My view is that it is a cheap way to keep people happy.

Is there a version with 16gb/512gb available? I can't seem to find it.

    • Nope. The only way I could get those specs is through Apple direct. It's the only way.
I bought last week with the 7% Apple Shopback offer

    • +2

If you are still wanting to buy a 16GB/512GB custom configuration, you may want to take advantage of this offer.

  • You can't get 24" iMAC for $1899 as Afterpay order must be less than AUD 2000.

    • you may have to buy some gift card and make it low than 2000? Not sure if it is working.
Also you have to check your afterpay credit limit.

    • My bad. Didn't realize $2k limit. I have removed

I had to admit, I had to Google "CTO" because I didn't know what it meant here. For anyone in the same boat as me, it's apparently "Configure to Order", meaning a non-standard build.

Which would explain why I haven't seen a 16GB/256GB M1 MacBook Air anywhere before… All the M1 models listed on the Apple site are 8GB/256GB or 8GB/512GB, and 16GB options are only available on the Intel-based models. I don't really understand why Wireless 1 would have a bunch of custom-built MacBook Airs though.

I don't really get why someone would increase the memory to 16GB but only give themselves 256GB SSD though, given the Air's are not upgradeable (unless you're a skilled Apple technician in Guangzhou). Are people finding that external SSDs are an OK alternative?

    • Hey, I'm not a computer expert but it seems that 8gb is ok for most on the M1 models….something about swapping out SSD space if RAM fills.

If anyone can explain it better it would be appreciated.

I would love 16GB but if a choice of higher RAM or more SSD space from what I have heard it's definitely be the latter

    • Once you add to cart on Apple's website you can customise up to 16gb of RAM.

    • You can absolutely upgrade the rams on the M1 on the Apple site. Just select the model and go through the buying process and you’ll eventually reach a page where you can upgrade the ram.

    • Bing Lee seem to stock this same model off-the-shelf too. https://www.binglee.com.au/apple-mgn63x-r16-macbook-air-256g…
But it doesn't seem to be sold everywhere, odd.

  • Apple sometimes has the 1TB 16GB Macbook Air available at Apple Stores (physical stores). You just need to call to check.

  • Can this play Dota on best setting?

    This or wait?
Been 3 months and still can't decide.
I want to buy this but I need more ports and better screen.
Don't like the design either. Reminds of the days people would pay +$2000 for something worth less than $2000. New MacBook pro would be at least $500 more expensive than this.
This is almost the same price as Apple store.

    • +1

if you need a laptop now get one, if you can wait a few months wait. The new MBP 14" will have better screen better specs and more ports. It will be pricier though.

      • So true. No doubt baout better screen and specs but I have just been wondering if I will end up getting it given it's going to be 2k+ I feel.

I have been contemplating getting this because I know I wont spend that much on a laptop when the new 14 inch comes out..

        Thoughts?

        • +1

It entirely depends on your budget and what you actually need it for. MBP will be more expensive so if you cant afford a $2500 device. The macbook m1 air is one of the best laptops you can get at the moment for the price. It should hold its value too. macbook air m2 wont release til 2022. also the macbook air has a 2k screen.

          • @DonkyWonky: Yeah for sure thanks for your input. I don't have a certain budget per se, just more so can't justify an $800 extra spend for a better screen and chip when this will do almost everything the other device can do and most of my work involves just regular office related tasks and nothing too heavy.

The other issue is also that my 2015 MacBook pro is still working ok, slowish and terrible battery but doing it's job haha

            • @bidam1: Yeah id go for the MBA then on sale, and if you can afford it with at least 512GB SDD and 16GB ram. 250GB is pretty small and it cant be upgraded.

    • +1

      This is 16gb

  • the mbp with M1X and better display is coming next month

    • +1

      that's why its going cheap

  • Got an M1 Air 16Gb in May.

One of the best laptops I've ever used. Everything works well for a Data Science (IT) student like me. All my applications work.

I have heard of my friend who is an Engineering student and has some issues with the M1 for incompatability.

Also, I'd really recommend getting 16gb of RAM. I know its an extra $250 and no one wants to support Apple but when you use the Mac and feel it for what its worth, that number looks really insignificant and completely worth it now looking back.

Also, 256gb storage is completely enough. People pushing for more storage don't know external hard drives exist along with Cloud Storage.

I got mine for around 1.5k too brand new.

Also side note, MInecraft can get choppy even at 50fps so note that this is NOT proper gaming machine.
But I have heard my friend plays LOL on his M1 Pro just fine so…

For those of you wanting to pull the trigger, all I can say is that I really recommend this Laptop.

You can wait for the M1X, but I suspect it will cost significantly more, and Apple will try to use thier amazing chip as leverage to justify a higher price.

    Just my hunch though.

  • Anyone finding that the coupon code is unable to be applied at checkout?

  • Anyone still waiting for their order from the deal in late June?

  • +1

My afterpay limit is 1500 but the macbook is 1529 :(.
Is there any solution for that ?

    • +1

Use an eBay giftcard to pay some of the balance first. And use afterpay for the rest

  • Is it new product or refurbished? My understanding CTO is only through Apple or authorised retailer such as JB Hifi.
