Is it still possible to not actually use Afterpay?

    • +2

Don't think so. They fixed it.

    • what is wrong with afterpay?

      • +17

you lose credit card benefits like price protection, accidental damage, extended warranty, which comes in handy on high end items

        • +4

It still gets charged to my 28 degrees and pretty sure I've successfully used price protection in the past.
          Depends on the card perhaps.

          • @G-rig: interesting to know, have 28deg also, didn't think it would work if you use a bnpl service & then pay it off, id still suggest contacting the cc company to make sure

            • +1

@RogueWolf: Agree, I have only used afterpay about twice to get the good code/price on ebay, but usually pay off the remaining instalments immediately (or ahead of time). Did that with the Sony wh-1000xm4 last time ($300.80) and have never seen them cheaper. It's impossible to get a home loan anyway, but not sure how much one needs to worry about your credit rating if you pay it off in time etc.

              Cheers,

              • +2

@G-rig: Afterpay does not do credit checks.

                • @[Deactivated]: Yeah was thinking of credit rating, not credit checks.
Most people aren't borrowing much typically (just the cost of the item)

            • @RogueWolf: Latitude is very generous with their price protection insurance according to my experience. You can pretty much do anything reasonable or even slightly unreasonable and they will still pay you.

              • @truetypezk: Cheers, moreso meant credit checks against using such things as BNPL services. Don't tend to often anyway but good to know.

              • @truetypezk: I have 28 degrees but dun think i have price protection.

                • @Bargain-er: I don't have 28 but got the coles MC with their old latitude account cover plus group policy that includes price protection. They happily take coupons/vouchers into consideration for price-match with no question asked. Superb customer service! Easily $1000-$2000 back a year.

        • you can still get all warranty through ebay? I thought you need an invoice from a proper shop for CC warranties.

          • +1

@aal04: They send you a store invoice as well

            • @G-rig: So when you're trying to make a price protection claim, do you reference the afterpay payment you made?

              • +2

@Dystopiux: I just put a description for ebay and then afterpay in brackets IIRC.
pretty hard to beat the after pay prices any tbh.

Ps a mate just bought a nest hub max last week at full price (unopened), recomeneded he take back to JB hifi and buy again, quick $100

        • +1

I've used price protection on both afterpay and latitudepay with no issue.

    • +17

For those interested, you can partially pay with gift cards, pay the balance on Afterpay and claim the full discount.

      https://imgur.com/gallery/jXNDk6I

      • What’s the benefit of this approach if still needing to use afterpay? Does it let you pay off the $5 immediately?

        • +3

You can buy ebay gift cards at a discount. Shopback app has them for 3% off atm.

        • As CodeXD says, it allows you to purchase discounted gift cards. You are then able to login to Afterpay and manually push through the remaining 3 payments.

        • +1

Does anyone know if there is a limit to the amount of gift cards you can apply? Could you use $1999?

Also do you how fast the cards are supplied via email?

          Thanks

          • +3

@crazyperpman: you can only use up to 7 ebay giftcards of any value

            • +3

@wakkawalla: By the way, just tried and it now looks like with afterpay, a maximum of 5 gift cards can be used. I managed to register more than 5 GC, but if you put more GC, the full price without the GC value will be shown to be paid on the afterpay page. Anyway, I grabbed a 5600X for about $290… stacking afterpay $30, ebay GC 10% off paid with coles GC 3% off…

          • +2

@crazyperpman: Partial Payment MUST be done via AP, so you cannot fully pay off the balance with gift cards.

        • Thanks for the info guys.

Just to explain further. I am planning on buying something for $1650 (Before AP Discount).

I want to buy a $1000 GC from shopback to the 3% and then purchase using 1K GC and the balance using AP and get 15% of total.

I can see partial payment has already been achieved but for a much lower amount. My fear is being stuck with a 1K Ebay GC if it isnt accepted for some reason.

          • +1

@crazyperpman: What's the highest denomination of ebay gift cards on shopback? just know you can only use a maximum of 5 gift cards with afterpay. You could try redeemyourgiftcard as well, they have 5% off with the swap one.

            • @F1ProjectOne:

You could try redeemyourgiftcard as well, they have 5% off with the swap one

If you know what the new promocode for this site is, please let us know. :-)
I think the old one stopped working just as soon as the AFPYDY15 eBay promotion started.

          • +1

@crazyperpman: Based on my experience this should work. The promo code should show a discount of $247.50 and you will be able to pay with $1000 with GC and the remaining $402.50 with AP.

          • +4

@crazyperpman: intended to buy ipad pro m1 11 which is around 1040 after AP discount, as my AP account is fairly new and only got 600 allowance, went to shopback to purchase $550 ebay giftcard.

Can confirm that the giftcard and voucher works together, but for my case i can't purchase that cuz afterpay rejects my order…

Well now i am stuck with $550 GC lol

            edit:
bought another $500 ebay GC, use afterpay to pay the remaining several dollars. same discount applied. Happy man again

      • +1

Thanks guys, purchased with no issues :)

      • Does this mean that the balance of the discounted amount is effectively taken off the gift card payment, leaving you that discounted amount in your account as a 'gift card'?

        • I used the total amount of the GC so not sure how that would work as you need to pay some amount from AP to get the 15%.

      • Heads up Tried this with $0.35 remaining for afterpay and it says "Your order total must be more than AUD 1 to use this payment method"

    • +1

Seems to be working if you're using giftcards - I haven't completed the transaction but it doesn't stop you applying giftcards and the afterpay code.

    • never used afterpay before, but $600 limit is crap,at least you get $1500 on Paypal. cant buy a GPU with $600 ;(

      • -1

$600 without a credit card check is great actually.

  • +33

    F' Afterpay.

    • +3

I know! How this loss making business is affording these costly marketing, as well as being sold for tens of billions of dollars I don't understand.

      • +12

BNPL are a scam you're charging the merchant 4-6% transaction fee each sale presumably on top of visa/Mastercard merchant fees. Long run this is going to push prices up. Example 1, Uber eats more expensive than retail store to recover uber processing fees.

        • +6

This. The clause that merchants cannot pass on the 4-7% (plus 30c fixed) to AfterPay customers needs to go.

          • +2

@wantfreestuff: Visa and mastercard were prohibited from this practice by the ACCC. Yet its ok for a technology innovator to have this as part of the differentiator?

        • +1

Well no. If someone picks Afterpay there is just the Afterpay fee as they clear the transaction. Visa and mc are no longer part of the equation.

Eg. Customer uses their Visa card for Afterpay
          Visa charges Afterpay the fee
Afterpay absorbs the fee (which is part of the reason they charge the merchant 4-6pc).

          • +1

@csider: As a merchant I pay Visa/Mastercard 0.6% fee through CBA and I don't process millions every month. So 4-6% is pretty high for merchants as Afterpay would be paying less than what I am.

            • +1

@All Blacks NZ: Not here to start a debate. I was just clarifying the misconception there is some double dip happening. Regardless of how you feel about Afterpay, there's a reason all the usual payment companies (visa, mc, amex, paypal etc) are scrambling to offer their own BNPL is because companies like Afterpay are circumventing/tapping into their gravy train of fees.

      • eBay or Afterpay? :)

        • I think ebay's shareholders have invested in Afterpay. Monopoly

      • +12

Cause their share price is through the stratosphere, based on 'growth'. Morons assume this growth will eventually result in vast and endless profits but to keep the share price sky high they need to maintain 'growth' at all costs.

Nobody seems to care in the slightest about current profitability, that is something that will sort itself out.

        Amazing stuff.

        • +3

          Worked for Amazon.

        • Network effects rather than profits is what this company is being valued on.

        • Afterpay lost $156m last year, 7 times more than it lost the year before but hey, look at the growth!

          https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-08-25/afterpay-zip-profit-f…

And one of their competitors lost $652 million as it too is chases growth. How much growth is there to go around?

Once you grow by giving money away you become reliant on giving even more away if you want to grow further. It is nearly always done as a short term emergency measure to briefly make the books look good in preparation for a sale, and that's what is going on here. Square is about to pay $39 billion for them so they are desperate to give the illusion of vast future growth and profits by any means possible and hey, it seems to be working but that is the reason for these wildly generous offers. Do not expect them to last long once reality kicks in and the new owners start to show some interest in eventually doing something other than lose money.

Amazon at least had profitable divisions to fund the loss making ones.

      • Their penalties for late payments are greater than most credit interest rates due to the loan's short timeframe; more importantly they also charge a fee to the retailer (eBay) who passes that on to the seller. Generally selling stuff on eBay comes with a ~13% or so sale fee for the seller unless they have some exemption or agreement or whatever.

        • -1

The eBay fee for sellers was always a thing though. Until recently it was two fees one to eBay and one to PayPal, now with the new managed payments they’re forcing upon everyone those fees are rolled into one, and probably have risen but I don’t know if the rise has been the 4-6% Afterpay charges merchants direct however.

    • They denied my referrals two times(one from ozbargain, one from family), before they denied it third time, pulled them out to chuck them into junk garbage.

Tried to ask them to honour me referrals or i leave their platform they openly agreed to delete my account.

Just shows how this company doesn't give a F about you as a customer. They only care about you bring money to them and straight afterwards say good bye, as if you are Peice of trash to them. For you to use them ever again would mean you are agreeing them to use you as a garbage again.

They had my limit set to $2000, while other places like latitude limit mine to like 300 max

Come on good deal on a xbox series x/s controller!

    • +2

Ms have Marked all their controller OOS. Bigw have black and white, eb have the colours but even with 15% off still no real deal

  • +3

Right after I use afterpay eBay promotion for 5% off yesterday a new 15% offer appears go figure haha..

  • You can buy the Breville Barista Express in the salted liquorice colour for $520 + 10 delivery from the good guys here

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Breville-BES870SLQ-Barista-E…

    • What is the difference in color between liquorice and salted liquorice?

      • I believe they are the same. There is a black sesame though which is similar. I think the salted liquorice has a bit of a sheen to it.

      • +7

The difference is the ability for retailers who have access to one colour and not the other to completely screw you on a price match/beat (non-identical SKU).

        • That's a very valid point!

  • +1

Can someone that has taken advantage of previous Afterpay deals please confirm if there are any negatives to this method provided you pay all four installments on time?
No impact to credit rating? Any extra fees? Any regrets from taking advantage of these deals?

    • +2

As long as you pay on time there isn't anything involved if you already signed up to it.

    • +3

i've done this several times. you make two payments: the first payment, then i go into my account and pay the rest off in a second payment.
i've never been charged extra and the police never came knocking, so seems all good.

      • Did this as well. I was expecting an instant charge, but they didn't until the 2nd payment was due. Something to watch out for.

      • they are all arresting people for exercising too long or not wearing their mask correctly

    • +1

Personally, I've had no issues with using these Afterpay offers. In June / July I bought an iPad Pro M1 and MacBook Air M1 with no dramas.

As I only used Afterpay to get the 15% discount I made the other 3 payments for each item immediately after.

Turned out the MacBook Air M1 was going to be delayed so the vendor refunded me after a couple of weeks and the credit card payments immediately reversed at Afterpay.

      YMMV

    • If you're applying for a loan then some include the afterpay credit (relatively small credit though). Apart from that there are no downsides. I've purchased through this method and then cleared the afterpay account as opposed to waiting for each installment.

    • +24

If you try to get a loan from a more credible lender for a substantial purchase in the future, they may question why you needed to use a loan to make such a small purchase. Or they may question your financial maturity if you thought it was a good idea to go into debt over something as a frivolous as a video game console etc.

Whilst Afterpay claim they don't do credit checks, they also reserve the right to do credit checks in the future according this article. https://mozo.com.au/fintech/love-afterpay-here-are-the-traps… Credit checks can affect your credit rating.

There's also the ethical issue of supporting a style of lending that seems to target young and dumb people and lower socioeconomic groups who maybe desperate for finance.

These are all my personal opinions and obviously not financial advice.

I personal wouldn't touch them or any company like them.

      • +1

Pretty simple answer to any lender in this context - I didn't need the loan, I repaid the repayments immediately after buying, and I did so in order to obtain a decent discount.

        • +8

Big banks will not care for your reasons. They won't ask but will hold it against you and reduce your borrowing capacity

        • +6

Why put yourself in a position where you have to defend your credit history (and hope they believe you) in the first place? I like saving a few bucks, but somethings are more important.

          • @PainToad: Maintain a good credit rating and shop around for lenders. Big four aren't the be all and end all..

            • @salamandersushi:

Big four aren't the be all and end all..

Why limit the number of lenders that want to deal with you for the sake of saving a few bucks. Again, just not worth it.

          • +2

@PainToad: The big banks will scrutinise all of your spending, not just afterpay. You'd better not have ever bought uber eats or paid for delivery of something you could have picked up, either, if you're genuinely that worried.

I've already got a home loan and I'm not looking to take another one out anytime soon, but I don't lose sleep at night over my very limited use of afterpay for ebay discounts (maybe once or twice a year).

            • @xyron:

You'd better not have ever bought uber eats

Never have, never will. Another company I despise.

paid for delivery of something you could have picked up

Delivery is included in the final sale price for general online purchases. Lenders have no way of knowing from statements if the amount includes extra for shipping. So that argument makes no sense.

            • +3

@xyron: Exactly. If a $2000 Afterpay facility is going to affect someone's ability to get a loan. I'd suggest that loan is unaffordable for them and best avoided.

              • @R4: You know when they assess the ability to repay a loan they assume you're maxxed out on all credit lines.

It doesn't matter if afterpay or another cc, $2k of available credit is assessed as $2k debt

          • @PainToad: I couldn't disagree more. Lenders like people who borrow money, as long as they pay it back on time. If you didn't need to borrow money, you wouldn't be applying for a loan.

Applying for loans and repaying them on time and closing them out quicker than you were meant to is a great way to build good credit. Often, people who do this will have a better credit rating than people who don't use finance.

            • @WhatWouldBiggieDo: Funny story but ING wanted me to basically prove I didn't need to borrow money before they would lend it to me. Lending is not as loose as it used to be 5yrs ago!

      • +1

My credit rating went up after paying off an Afterpay plan (not that I am interested in a loan)

      • There's also the ethical issue of supporting a style of lending that seems to target young and dumb people and lower socioeconomic groups who maybe desperate for finance.

I use it to pay for meals for two weeks while working away. It's more financially responsible to spread the payments over the time that I'm consuming the product than paying upfront, no?

    • No issues with Afterpay. That's exactly what I do — pay it off usually same day.

    • No

    • You agree for using a trash company that doesn't care about customers
      Thats all.

  • +17

Fifteen? But last year… last year I had twenty percent.

    • +2

But some of them are much bigger

    • But some of the items are a bit different this year…

    • You're upset? I'm still crying about the 25% cashback promo that I only used once but turned out to be valid for multiple transactions

  • +1

just login to afterpay when your done and force the remainining payments, then you don't have to deal with the payments coming out every week

    • +2

That's what I do. I mainly use after pay for the promotion but I almost always pay it off immediately

      • Just curious, what are the reasons behind paying off immediately vs in 3 instalments over 6-8 weeks?

I would've thought other than no descriptions on bank statement, paying in instalments with no interest would be better?

        • +1

Generally I'd agree, but for most of us on here I doubt we'd be buying things THAT expensive we can't afford to pay it one go after the discount. It's just a mental thing as well, rather pay it off than watch it come out weekly afterwards..
