11400h variant just arrived yesterday….. Not had enough time to test much but idle CPU temp is 50-60 degrees and under load for 3dmark, cyberpunk, witcher 3, just cause 4, etc. it hit 90 degrees… I hate to think of the 11800h CPU temperatures - makes me wonder if the 10300 might have been the safer option!…… GPU was a little cooler running idol of course…. Bios, Win10, Nvidia drivers updated to latest before testing - Bios is locked for Intel undervolting, etc…… I wouldn't like to run the thing at these temperatures for any period of time without expectation of problems and no real way of limiting anything suggest longevity of the laptop won't be great… If anyone has the key presses, etc to get into advance bios (to enable undervolt/underclocking) it would be appreciated - I just want to protect the machine form itself - I'm happy to restrict it for sake of having a decent workhorse that lasts a decent amount of time whilst giving reasonable performance…

    • Can't you just use Throttlestop to undervolt?

CPU core voltage is greyed out in throttlestop - As far as I can tell it's bios locked so the only way would be to get into advanced bios settings to enable things. In the Intel extreme tuning utility the only thing I can do is disable Turbo Boost short power max - all other settings are greyed out.

        • Hi could i ask what frequency your ram is running at? I checked mine using CpuZ but for some reason my stock ram was running only at 800mhz. I also bought new ram 3200 mhz 2x8gb to see if it would change, but it is still running at 800mhz.

          • @Bshank: Just checked cpu-z also and it's reporting 800mhz but single channel! odd - windows is reporting 3200mhz.. I also have replacement ram on the way to run dual channel 32gb.

Also ran passmark performancetest on the memory and got a result of 1667 which is extremely low in the 16th percentile - I'm guessing this is because it's running single channel at the moment. I'd expect better results with 2 modules…

            • @evanssm2jp: Must be model specific then beacuse i am running dual channel as well and it still reports 800mhz, i dont see an option to change it in the bios but my windows also says 3200mhz. Been trying to find a fix but i still see a massive performance boost when i add the new ram.

        • CPU core voltage is greyed out in throttlestop

Damn! That is potentially a deal-breaker unless there's a way to enable it in the bios.

@CVonC: It's most Intel CPUs that can no longer be undervolted due to the Plundervolt Exploit. I was shocked when I recently updated the BIOS on one of my laptops (Alienware 13 R3) and it could no longer be undervolted and stuck with hot CPU temps again.

The 11th gen didn't need a BIOS update to get rid of undervolting because they just locked it out from the get go. I believe manufactures can still set an undervolt in the BIOS which the user may have control over the offset - but that would be different between OEMs and even model to model. It can't hurt to poke around in the UEFI bios settings to see if it's still possible there, but undervolting in Intel XTU and Throttlestop appear to no longer work.

I'm surprised Plundervolt didn't get more exposure. It really hit intel hard in their gaming laptop CPUs.

            • @studentl0an: Dam I had no idea! Can the AMD CPUs be undervolted? I guess there's no way to downgrade your firmware too?

              • +1

@CVonC: It's possible to downgrade firmware but it's not straight forward and there is a small possiblity of bricking it during the downgrade.

Since I don't game on the Alienware at the moment I'm not going to risk downgrading the firmware for now. I also have the graphics amplifier for it so don't need to worry about thermals that much if using an external GPU.

I've got a laptop with a Ryzen 4800H CPU and 1660ti GPU. Ryzen desktop CPUs can be undervolted with Ryzen Master. Ryzen mobile CPUs can not be undervolted and they run hot. However they run hot because they have 8 cores running at close to 4ghz when the 1660 is also being stress tested so it's a marvel how they can literally be faster than 2x 7700HQ slapped together (8 cores at near 4.0ghz)

There is a utility, Ryzen Controller, that allowed Ryzen mobile chips to have their thermal throttle limit, TDP and boost behavior changed but I found it to not really make any difference in the Asus TUF FA706IU that much.

Maybe in the future a utility will come out that can undervolt Ryzen mobile.

This deal is available again as of this morning, Thursday 26th August. The ENTER30 code still works (just need 2 items in your cart - there are some $2-$5 screen protectors or memory cards for a cheap option). Also don't forget Cashback or Shopback. Delivery is extra - for me it was $12 normal 1-4 days and $20 express (next day).

    • Awesome news! You might want to post it as a deal to give it more visibility. It's an amazing machine, but I'd recommend anyone who can to change out the default RAM for something better. It makes a hell of a difference, especially for gaming.
