  • Dual core with 8GB of RAM….Now that will age well

    • But at least it has a nice sharp 1080p 14" screen and a massive 256gb SSD ;-) bargain!

Eh, it's not that bad, depending on use case. Looks like it's actually the 5406. You can upgrade the RAM/SSD in the future if need be.

      Service manual

Let's be honest, for your average person just looking for something to browse Facebook/YouTube/Ebay, maybe watching some videos and running MS Office, this will do fine. It's designed for portability and battery life, not to be used as a workstation/desktop replacement. Hell, might even get some light gaming out of it. I'm sure it'd run your older titles and eSports titles in a pinch at 1080p. Intel onboard graphics might not be pumping out frames but they're a lot better than they had to be. Plus it'll run Win 11 when available.

TLDR: I wouldn't buy it for code development or gaming, but I'd happily recommend it for the Mrs or parents as a general light usage device.

If you have access to an edu email address you can get the Lenovo Flex 5 14" with touch screen for just $50 more delivered

      https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/education/laptops/ideapad/flex-…

      Main differences vs this deal

*More powerful AMD Ryzen 5500U Hexa-core CPU vs dual core Intel i3

      https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i3-1115G4-vs-AMD-…

      AMD Ryzen 5 5500u scores 13577 (Lenovo)

Intel i3-1115G4 scores just 6538 (Dell)

      *Bigger SSD Drive

512GB SSD (Lenovo) vs 256GB SSD (Dell)

*Bigger battery for longer term daily use away from the power point.

      52wh battery (Lenovo) vs 40wh battery(Dell)

      *Windows 10 Home 64(Lenovo) vs Windows 10 S(Dell).

This can be changed, but still its an inconvenience to change that you don't have to worry about.

      • Appreciate this , thanks!

      • Important to also consider the single core rating. For applications that are optimised for parallel processing, or for multitasking, the AMD has an advantage.

For single thread applications in isolation (think older games and desktop applications as an example) the Intel has an advantage.

        Single core ratings:
        Intel: 2768
        AMD: 2497

That's also assuming no thermal throttling which you will likely see in devices this compact. You'd need to check device model specific reviews for real world expectations to allow for the CPU + cooling system on each different model.

        • Modern applications and games are optimized for multi-core, because everything from phones, consoles to PCs are using multiple cores. The difference in single-core performer is negligible, compared to almost 70% increase in performance the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U has over the Intel i3.

In relation to thermal throttling, the Lenovo Flex 5 has a much better cooling system because it was designed to take into consideration the 8 core AMD Ryzen 7 5700u, which is also available in this configuration. Hence reviews are very positive.

Bought similar units for my kids school work in Jan-20 (although they were cheaper: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/514820) and they run ok for their schooling needs.
