  • How much in title?

Is this an official ledger reseller? Always be cautious when buying crypto wallets from third party.

    • Thats right, just like any other products on ebay, buyers must conduct due diligence before purchase.

      • +10

Way more important for one of these

        • +2

No way I'd save a few bucks with 3rd party to store a serious portfolio on. Buy from the source folks.

    • +2

What's the reason? is it because of fake products which can steal your private keys?

      • +6

        Yep.

The obvious scam is for them to have set it up first, so you receive a pre-configured device where they already know the private key.

More elaborate scams replace the internals to capture your private keys on entry or distribute malware when you connect it to your computer.

      • No it's because unofficial ledger reseller's have previously leaked buyer email addresses, which have then been used in an elaborate phishing scheme targeted at the Ledger owners. It goes a fair bit deeper than that too, even to the point where scammers sent fake replacement Ledger hardware wallets to users, intended to further phish crypto from the user.

I was one of customers that had all my personal details stolen like millions of their customers. Ledger has refuses to help anyone, even customers receiving death threats at their home addresses or had crypto stolen as a result. They argue it would cost them millions and put them out of business.

Any business can be hacked but how this was handled and is being handled is not great. My primary email account is useless, continuous fake emails trying to get my Crypto

I’m not saying Ledgers product are bad or don’t buy them, just be aware if you have any issues with them, expect zero assistance if it will cost them money. I haven’t used my Lesger since nor will I use it, I am concerned about their security.

@WhiteEvo6: So you bought a legit nanoledger and got scammed? Can you elaborate on the scam?

        • sircrumpet is 100% correct; please refer to the coin bureau article he has linked to. With all due respect to PCByte, I'd never purchase a hardware wallet from an unauthorised reseller. I know it's OzBargain but in this case, I'd be quite happy to pay a little extra and buy straight from the source. It's more than worth for the peace of mind.
Also, in light of the Ledger customer data leak, it's best to get them posted out to a parcel locker or collect from Post Office instead of getting them shipped to your home.

    • Just reset when you get it. Simple

    • Was just gonna say the same, only buy from ledger site imo.

      I much prefer trezor

  • +3

I wouldn't say people who have hardware wallets are price sensitive.

  • +14

It's really not worth the risk to buy a hardware crypto wallet from an unauthorised reseller on eBay.

The couple of bucks you save now will be worthless if the device has been tampered with, and there's documented cases of this being a key attack vector.

Always buy direct or from an approved reseller.

If you really want to take the risk, make sure you check it's genuine once you receive it.

  • Hmm tempting for the price, but yes a bit sketchy..
Item does say “Brand new”, but how would you know?

  • +17

    I have one of these..
its currently worth more than the alts that are stored on it ;)

    • +1

      Lmao legit

  • Anyone know of any discount codes for ledger's site? I tried a 20% off code from coin bureau yesterday but that didn't work.

  • +2

Why take a risk just to save a few bucks? Buy from approved sellers or ideally direct when it comes to hardware wallets. I wouldn't buy no matter the reputation of the eBay seller.

  • +4

save $40 but risk losing 10s of 1000s i think ill pass on this one it is a good deal but crypto it a investment that security needs to be put to the max!

  • Keepkey seem good. Have 3 of them. As above, one of mine was checked by customs (I ordered through their official website) no customs identifier was filled out on the check sticker so I lodged for another to be sent out due to security breach, customer support was happy and understanding even agreeing with me. Sorry OP but some 20 bucks saved by getting it from third party may well become thousands in losses if not millions. Specially when the direction has come directly from ledger teams to be cautious while purchasing from third party.

For the same reason, negging this.

Edit: anyone wanting Ledger hardware wallet, would recommend to go for nano ledger X (not S). Even when paying little extra, would be worth it. Wait for promotions and you may well get 10-20% off.

    • Edit : completely misread, disregard .

The only safe way is to generate a random address your self and write/print it. Or conveniently but not so safe: you can use your old iphone(No Android sorry. Android is never safe) and ensure it disconnects forever.

  • Dumb question 1: Obviously quite risky to buy from third party. But can't you reset the key phrases like an email password reset?

Dumb question 2: does this key store at least the top ten coins?

    • +1

      1) Yes but you dont know what the third party may have done hardware or software wise so rather safe than sorry
      2) https://www.ledger.com/ledger-live desktop app which allows you to "install" any number of coins to your device

  • I'm planning on getting a hardware Wallet but a bit confused about how they work.
    Are only certain cryptos compatible?

    • That's right. For me the main use is linking it to my Metamask wallet, so any transaction done has to be authorised on my Ledger Nano. This is if you get into staking and purchasing tokens that aren't available on your favourite broker site.

A friend of mine lost his ETH that he mined. He kept it on a Metamask wallet and thinks the password was stolen. So he has now ordered a Nano Ledger X to link to his Metamask wallet.

      • Can you put ADA and TEL on the ledger now? Before they cant. I have small holding but still thinking of putting them on the hardwallet rather than leave them on the exchange.

        • I heard that in this quarter Ledger will have native account for ADA. At moment you need other ADA wallets (and balances dont come up on Ledger Live (Will need to refer to third party ADA wallet.

Will be good when Ledger get full support, then will be able to see balances just like BTC and ETH, etc

          • @freeman61: Oh really? Thanks for the info. I will wait till they get the native account for ADA then as I only hold 99 ADA. LOL

    • Think of them as a 2FA for your bank accounts.

You still need an account (wallet), but any out going transaction will require it to authorise.

      • You don't need another wallet for all coins.

        • no you don't, but trying to simplify it for them.

  • +1

Use a PO box for delivery.

  • +1

wonder the people who buys them are scammers or just silly buggers……

  • Just buy a $19 "Samsung BAR Plus 32gb USB Drive", store your private keys in plain text files then encrypt the drive (bitlocker/VeraCrypt). Scared of losing it? Or it going corrupt? Buy two and put one in your relatives safe, also encrypted of course. They claim to be Water, Shock, Magnet, Temperature, X-Ray resistant.

    • The whole thing about ledger is that the private key never leaves hardware wallet. Any transaction has to be manually authorised within ledger wallet. With USB storage, it wouldn't be the case.

  • +1

My mistake was not researching more before buying one (Nano X), got it mainly for ADA staking.
Its great for what it is.

For me, its not actually worth it.

My portfolio is not big enough to spend $200, plus transfer fees every time u want to move the coins.

In hind sight, I should have waited till my portfolio reaches say around $50000. (From an initial investment of $5000)
And have enough of a (any) coin/s that I want to hold long term. (Years)

Cause right now, I'm in the trying to make compound interest/earning phase, so I need the coins to be on the exchange anyway.
So no point in paying transfer fees every time I want to trade. (Bitcoin is like $50+ per transfer)

So my one is just sitting in the drawer, and only really protecting 40% of my portfolio, cause the rest I need to trade (monthly/weekly).

    • Bitcoin is like $50+ per transfer

Not currently… Usually only high fees during some rarer crazy times.
