  • Wow this cheap. Gets pretty good reviews as well!

  • +1

ECO friendly innovations and yet, upto 150 watts consumption?… Price wise its excellent.. Only a few years ago I bought my mum a 32" HD LCD for $900…

    • few years in technology times is like generations differences

    • What is the Television market looking like for the next 4-5 months? I'm moving overseas for work and will need to buy a nice big TV before I go. Anyone with any idea think that TV quality will get better with cheaper prices than this by May? Or is this such a good price for a good quality TV I should buy it now and just store it in the shed until I leave?

      • Why would you want to buy a TV before moving overseas? Unless you need one before you leave (and then you could pick up someones unwanted CRT and set-top box for nix), you'd be better to leave it until you return. As above, technology changes rapidly, devaluing older models. Also the warranty would be running while being stored in the shed.

        • Moving overseas for 3 years, we get free shipping of all our possessions to our work supplied house, so would like something that will be good to watch. Where I'm going TV's aren't cheap so would like to pick something up here where they are obviously pretty cheap.

      • Overseas 110v or 220-240V?

        • +1

Same as Australia so 220-240V I assume

        • Yes but which digital system are they using in that country as this set may only work on DVB-T.

For more info wiki is your friend - esp see the map of distributions
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_television

        • +1

Yep its DVB-T so all good there. It's sold out now so I'll have to wait and see if prices stay around the same for this set or prices drop on higher quality sets. Fingers crossed

      • Buy something good quality! You don't want this to break down while overseas.

        • I'd say this set would be as durable as any other sets regarding it lasting three years. Other sets cost more not because they are more durable, it's for better features, picture quality etc.

      • and did u think about warranty issues…

lcds have a habit of failing within one year..esp the panel tend to get problems
at least the ones I bought did

and they were big name brands
        sony and samsung

      • +3

get more OZbargain spirit and bring your TV with you to the plane for 10% GST back! :$

  • Nearly half this price. http://www.1wow.com.au/hitachi-42-fhd-1080p-lcd-tv-l42ec05au…

Seems like an odd price to sell it at. Maybe it's their cost price?

I guess the manufacture warranty is 1 year when it's not mentioned?

  • GJ to all those people who waited two weeks from the last post to get this now :)

  • +1

    Awwwwwww YEAHHHHHHHH

  • anyone know what the warranty is on this ?

  • Warranties don't matter all that much when you consider your rights until the Australian Consumer Law.

    • +2

I can't be bothered going through the OFT just to fix my TV, plus if a TV purchased at $320 in the second year, would be considered of merchantable quality, so it is likely that your appeal to the OFT would be rejected. So the $30 warranty plan is quite decent.

      • I said warranty, not "extended warranty". It was in response to the first guy.

    • +1

Everyone knows these tvs have a 1 year warranty- and its why they are priced so competitively.

If it breaks in the 2nd year and you have decided not the get the warranty- your fault. Suck it up and move on.

      • All makes offer one year warranty except for LG LED and Sharp LED, correct?

        • SHARP Lcd offers 3 year standard warranty.

  • So cheap… but just can't justify another TV lol

    • +2

If the other TV doesn't have PIP then you should get this!!

  • Is it a good idea to use this as a computer monitor?

    • Depends for what, gaming and movies yes. Web browsing and other apps (i.e. Word or Excel), no. Large screens are quite inefficient and blurry compared to monitors. Also, you're electricity bill will be sky high compared to a 30-50W monitor.

Similarly a Panasonic 42" plasma TV is again on special for $498 and in my opinion I would pay the extra $75 for a panasonic plasma vs hitachi LCD.

Don't forget to hassle your friends and family who work with woolies about plugging in their Woolworths card details and get additional 5% off!

PPS get the extended 2 yr warranty for $30

    • +5

You mean an extra $175 ??

    • +2

      @dimsim99

I like Panasonic and their range of Plasma tv's but the one you mentioned costs $175 more than the Hitachi and an extra $24 for delivery

    • +2

      Someone can't count !

      • +7

Haha I stand corrected. Now how do I delete my comment…

        • +22

You can't. You must suffer the shame. lol

          You need MOD like powers.

  • +10

Too bad this isn't a Japanese made Hitachi TV but a Tempo knockoff:
    http://www.channelnews.com.au/Display/Industry/T5V5U7H3?page…

My Dad still has his Hitachi LCD bought 5-6 years ago. This Tempo TV I would avoid.

    • Thanks for the heads up. Was just about to pull the trigger on this deal when I read the article you posted. Dodged a bullet there

      • +1

mate, its dirt cheap, who cares whats going on as long as you get the tv,……

        • Mate, I want a genuine Hitachi orrite!

        • -1

I used to work at a retail giant and we used to get so many of these cheap branded TVs back for repair and at one point we had to stop selling them as the rate of return exceeded the rate of purchase.

My advice: I personally wouldn't be buying it. But hey, if you are after a "disposable" TV for a cheap price, then go for it.

      • +1

Why was that ? Things have come along way. And if it lasts 12 months it will be fine. By then I'll pick up a 50" for 199 :-)

    • yes its not a real hitachi, not worth getting.

    • Agreed. I would give these units a very wide berth. For similar, or less, you should be able to get a deal on a Changhong or Hisense unit from HN or JB. Little difference in quality to these knock-off Hitachi units, but you won't have to try dealing with Tempo in the advent of a warranty claim.

As a total aside, I remember my old boss - back in 2001 - walking into JB HiHi and getting "a fantastic deal on one of those huge plasma televisions". It was a standard definition Hitachi and set him back a little under $16,000. [thud] You can now spot them on the side of the road for council pickups! ;-)

      • +5

If the quality is similar, I'd rather have "Hitachi" than "Changhong" in my living room. :)

        • +3

There is no proof in that article that these are made in some dodgey chinese factory (not that there is many left, most chinese factorys are state of the art 5 star hotel look alikes.).

And why would hitachi put on their website that they are now distributed by Tempo if they had no idea?
          http://www.channelnews.com.au/Display/Industry/T5V5U7H3?page… Looks like a load of Cr@p

        • Hitachi have sold their trademark to the highest bidder. There is no Hitachi design/IP going into this unit. This is not Apple having Foxconn produce a product, or Dell getting Compal to manufacture a notebook. This TV has nothing to do with Hitachi, except for the namesake.

Whether it's dodgy or not, we don't know. All that is trying to be said is don't buy this thinking you are getting a Hitachi designed TV, it's coming from any number of factories.

Hitachi left the Australian CE market a while ago. Please see http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/21/hitachi-leaves-oz-goodbye…

      • OMG, so what your saying is things dont hold their value forever…WOW I am not the only one in shock here I bet :/

    • +1

wat the?! so its not even made by hitachi
its like getting a soniq or… telefunken!!

      • Yeah the whole thing stinks of deception and underhanded tactics especially if Hitachi has absolutely nothing to do with these TV's. Im sure the ACCC would be keen to hear about it.

        • +1

          Hitachi's official website states

          http://www.hitachi.com.au/products/consumer/home-electronics…

"Hitachi LCD Televisions from 1st September 2011 are distributed in Australia by Tempo (Aust) Pty Ltd. Please visit their site for further information"

They also provide a direct link to the Tempo website.

        • wow I read through most of the thread and I thought that Hitachi had just given the rights for this new company to use their name. But after reading the article it seems like this company just stole the Hitachi name and using it for themselves?

        • I would say the local distributor in Australia to be Tempo. Still Hitachi product.

        • It is not a Hitachi designed TV. They are distributed by Tempo under the Hitachi brand and manufacturers by a Chinese manufacturer who has the naming/distribution rights.

Hitachi haven't "made" a TV in 4 years.

  • How would this TV go playing Bluray? Any good vs top end TVs? As in is there a massive difference?

    • should be good…i dobut it much diff, its prob better than top end tvs 2-3 years ago,..

its 1080P so should look good… well i hope and for that price, i wouldnt compalin

  • whoo haaa… SNAPPED this one right up,… just selling my old 5 year old 52" rptv , this will do nice, real nice, HIT the spot!

  • Post seems to be about $15 most places as it is to west Queensland which usually gets stung on post. Seems like a great deal!

  • -1

    1,000,000 : 1 Contrast Ratio?
I think that is wrong, Big W states 30,000:1 which is more believable

    • The specs posted were taken from the manufacturers website

I'd be careful with the specs on the Big W page, it states that the TV is 100hz - which seems incorrect based on info in the instruction manual.

      • +1

        One is dynamic other actual.

Dynamic, truth be told can be infinity : 1. It's just bs marketing.

  • +1

I'm pretty sure this is the same as the Bauhn 42" from last year @ $499, except less warranty

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/41160

The menu's, remotes, inputs etc are all the same. Just slightly different design.

Anyway the Bauhn was a great TV for the price.

  • one more reason to buy…
user instructions from Tempo site says this has PVR (USB recording) function, not listed on BigW site or OP.

    • big w model number L42EC05AU matches the one in the manual which indicates that it does have PVR

  • Wait so does it come with 1 or 2 years warranty ? I cant see anything anywhere

  • If you pay with Amex you get an additional years warranty. At least with my card, pretty sure its across all amex cards.

    • same with Visa Gold/Platinum an extra year added on

  • .

  • Are your orders processed immediately? I paid by AMEX, and the status is still showing "Order Being Processed" after 1 hour

  • I'm ridiculously tempted by this. How long until they are doing 42' LED LCD's regularly for $398 or 42" LCD's for $299?

    • Give it a year.

  • What's with everyone going on about extended warranty? The way TV prices are going, if the TV carks it in a year just buy another one!

    • Have you not seen where this type waste ends up?

    • You don't need to do that, just look up 'statutory warranty'. Most reasonable people would presume a TV should last at least 3 to 5 years!

      • Yet large TVs manufacturers universally offer only 1 year.

        • Lol, yep! The most ironic part is that when they offer 2 or 3 years warranty on a big ticket product they spruik like it's a big selling point…well, I suppose it is to uninformed consumers! :p

      • +1

yes i posted a subject about the cttt (explaining how easy it is to take your complaint to them), just because the seller only gives you a year doesnt mean the tribunal will accept that, they said 3 years for laptops and so if you are the type of person that will take a product back after the time lapse then go read. i cant post links from a mobile just look through the forums under group deals its there somewhere

  • Can it be mounted on the wall?

Edit: After reading the manual, it appears you can!

  • Goddamn, I hummed and hahhed about this,

    NOW ITS SOLDOUT :<

    • +2

It could turn out to be a dud. Maybe that will turn your frown upside down.

  • +2

    $340 for a 42" 1080P LCD TV,what can we complain?

  • Ok, so where have the 'Hitachi' company distributed their products to be manufactured in another country other than Japan right? I don't trust the build quality. It'll probably stop working after a year or two anyways…

  • Gone!!

    • ozbargained! sort of

  • Does the USB slot provide a PVR function ?

    • read the above comments?

      yes.

  • This is made by Tempo? They are a crap company, I had a Tempo TV that had large dark spots, they said it was normal but as if - I had to return it!

  • well if you missed aldi have 32" with built in dvd for $260 if you dont want it so big.

  • +1

Can someone link me to cheapest wall mount for this cheap tv?

  • Got one and very happy you have to grab bargains when you can and today this is a bargain!

    • +5

      Why no +?

      • +1

        How do I +?

  • Wasnt planning on buying a tv but I couldnt pass this up :D With my staff discount card it was basically free shipping <3 Now I can finally watch Blurays on HD instead of my old 22 inch moniter.

    • +1

Should've shared your staff discount haha.

  • Went to Campsie Big W today and they have a lot of sony LCD TV's on clearance most likely old models and a few ps3 120gb spider man TV bundles as well

  • dont know to much about no brand tvs, but when comparing picture to picture less say a samsung, can u even tell the diffence?
