How does Fire TV compare to Google TV?

    • +6

I wouldn't bother with a fire tv. Google tv is so much better to use

      • Is this from personal experience?

        • +3

Yes have had both. Google tv layout is more intuitive and the app selection is miles ahead

      • +4

Can Google TV run Prime Video reliably?

        • +4

Same as Netflix, just install it from the play market

          • @rwt: I’m using my FetchTV to watch Prime. It’s a PITA. Often requires restarting the “app”.

            • @ca6leguy: I'm witching prime not so often - once a week or something but newer had any issues

    • +2

Google TV is FAR superior. Also has Apple TV is you're into that.

      • -4

I made the right choice =] Negging coz cheaper elsewhere soz Op

        • +1

Can you post links where it's cheaper?

      • +4

Apple tv is on firetv devices also.

        • My bad on the Apple tv

      • +1

Firestick also has Apple TV btw

      • +2

How so? Firetv has auto frame rate matching. Chromecast for Google tv doesn't. It's also faster.

    • +3

Google is far better as a platform, but the fire TV remote feels way better. Had both, gave the fire TV away.

      • You can probably use the Fire TV remote with the Google TV if you pair it

        • +1

You can, but the voice button doesn't work.

    • I have a fire TV and a chromecast.

Fire TV has no added advantage to Chromecast, Google TV. However navigating and searching content in fire tv is a night mare.
Recommend highly not to buy Fire TV

The stick is not 4K, and the picture quality is not same as a Chromecast /Google TV. Amazon lowers the quality of the video if the internet has some slow speed at times.

Hmm Prime Day price match coming?

One available on ebay. $54.44 with AfterPay

    • Out of stock and afterpay deal no longer available

    • @Pricebeat That link is unfortunately out of stock - if you know of any others please post. Thanks!

      • There was only one in stock. I will see if I can find anything

        • Many thanks :-)

    GoogleTV > Firestick

  • looks like 2021 4K version…

    • +2

Sadly that is a dishonest description by Amazon. The only 2021 about the 4K Firestick is the updated remote. The Stick itself was launched in 2018.

      • Yeah it's being marketed here in Australia as 4k 2021 release. Remote is new, but stick's internals probably didn't change much for couple of years.
At least they finally released it here and we don't have to rely on grey imports.

  • +1

Does this beat one of those Chinese Android boxes? Those boxes these seems to have better "spec."

    • +2

Depends on what you need it for. The Firestick does not have a usb plug so external storage cannot be used without a additional attachment. But firetv will be likely supported longer software wise because its Amazon backed over a 3rd party android box.

    • +2

Don't waste your time on chinese boxes. Get the shield.

    • +3

Mi tv stick is really good with Android tv on board, about $45 on the eBay

  • +1

I like the fire tv that windows 10 can treat it as extended 2nd screen. Wonder if the 4k version supports this. This is a different feature of Chromecast mirroring. Explanation is here https://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/how-to-use-your-tv-as-an-ext…

  • Can you load Kayo or Kodi?

    • +1

      yes :)

      • Kayo being not available on firestick was another minus for me, I forgot to add that on my comment haha.

Last time I check, Kayo website mentions only android box available are you sure?

        • +1

I have Kayo running on my firestick all fine.

You can sideloap any APK app file using the app "downloader" on the firestick

          • @Contopaxi: well you learn everyday. thanks sir. but my 3 years old firestick almost unusable i wont bother with that one. (only using for disney+ which is not available on my Hisense tv lol)

            • @Cpt Archer: It took me a bit of download and trial and error as you need to find the apk version that is supported but I usually just went with something with the latest upload date.

You can also run Kayo add on through Kodi but I had audio sync issues that I couldn't sort out

              • @Contopaxi: Using my TV as an extended monitor (as someone mentioned above) may be a solution for me. I will give it a try that one first tonight.

          • @Contopaxi: Sort of. Many apps intended for Android phone/tablet devices won't parse and one's intended to be operated by touchscreen have limited manoeuvring as Android TV is controlled by Bluetooth controllers, so up, down, left, right and click only. A few apps do have a built in cursor circle and that's about it.

    • +1

Kayo is not available on the Amazon ecosystem… (their aps store) need to download elsewhere or just use the browser…

  • +1

Im on the edge of purchasing firestick or chromecast 4k.
I have 3 x echo dots (thanks ozb) at home and I want to stick with the ecology but people says chromecast better so…

Price wise, Firestick better. I havent seen any on chromecast (I dont mind the netflix offer) so $65 firestick or $99 chromecast?

    • Which device offers better support and longer device life support? That I think counts a lot too.

    • +1

Depends on the apps you use. Neither device has native support for all apps. They both do support the big main ones like, Prime, Netflix, Disney+ , Apple+ etc.

    • Chromecast is much better in terms of being able to cast just about everything.

      • how's voice recognation of chromecast remote? my huawei mate20 pro's voice assistant is total junk comparing to Siri. But im happy with amazon echo's

        • +1

Google TV Chromecast voice recognition is much better than Fire Stick

  • +3

Damn this is a good deal, was waiting for Prime Day to get one. Now people are saying get a Google TV instead, can you still jailbreak Google TV like you can on Fire Stick?

And is Google TV worth the extra $30?

    • Main difference is the Play store and Chromecast.

Firetv doesn't have that, but it also has auto frame rate matching which Google TV doesn't.

      Overall they are both similar.

      • this auto frame rate matching.. are you sure it works for netflix and disney plus or only prime video?

      • +1

I do already have a chromecast but I rarely use it unless I'm watching the soccer through Optus Sport on my phone. I'm so torn on what to get to be honest. I've been waiting for the Fire Stick to drop in price and hadn't even heard of Google TV until today.

I'm going to be completely honest and the reason I wanted a Fire Stick was because I saw videos of people 'jailbreaking' it and putting on apps that let you watch sport and tv channels from all over the world. I can't afford every streaming service so I was hoping to keep Prime video and Netflix and somehow do a work around for the others.

    • whats the benefits of jailbreaking fire stick?

      • I saw you can put apps on it and streaming services that you can't get from the Fire store or whatever the app store is called.

    • You don't "jailbreak" devices with an Android OS - it's known as "rooted" as it means you've gained root access to the settings not normally available out of the box.

  • -5

Firestick is the worst of all the sticks.

    • +1

I'd say it is one of the best.

      • my own stick is the best…
        every other sticks r at best… 2nd

      • I’ve got two you can have for free then.

        • Sure. Pmed you.

        • Gimme gimme

    • -1

I’ll take it. Send me details.

  • can i cast from my device to a firestick?

  • +1

can you turn your tv ON/OFF via the same remote that comes with the fire stick or chromecast? that would be so good if its possible..

    • It does (based on the review videos). Also soundbar and stuff too I guess

      • +1

Yes CEC control. Plus the remote can control the volume of TV, Soundbar or Amp - you choose which. The default is TV if set.

        • are we talking about chromecast or fire tv? this is very interesting and im willing to upgrade from vodaphone tv is thats the case, i hate using 2 remotes

          • @striker5950: Vodafone tv should be able to already

            • @DONMAI: It can… CEC is a standard…

              • @vinnycol: idk if this is the case with chromecast (can someone who has it confirm) but on vodaphone tv when i use netflix the picture looks worse than using the built in tcl c715 netflix app, using the native app it shows a better picture better blacks. why is this? also Vodaphone tv does not support dolby vision on netflix which is kinda weird.

also can chromecast play 4k netflix (yes i have the 4k plan) with no issues? and can it play dolby vision/dolby atmos/hdr10 titles with no issues or bugs? i've read some stuff about it when it was first released i read it was buggy, have those issues been fixed yet?

i just want an upgrade with a snapy UI coz the tclc715 at times feels a bit laggy, so i want snappy UI and one remote. the vodaphone has that issue with netflix that i mentioned and also bluetooth headphones go out of sync with vodaphone tv but with the main tcl built in android OS is does not lag at all. weird.

    • I can from Firestick my old Sony tv

  • +3

I have the earliest version of firestick. Cant complain as i can stream and watch everything free 😷💪🏿

    • +1

      Which apps for that?

  • My fire stick broke down after one month. The remote is shaky

  • +1

Bought $99 from jb hifi few weeks ago 😞

  • Why no comments of how small the remote is and `^ing hard to find !

  • +2

Just to let you know, This is device is Amazon Fire TV stick 4K - 1st Generation, released October 31, 2018.

I recently bought "All-new Fire TV Stick | Alexa Voice Remote with TV Controls | HD streaming device | 2021 release" from Amazon and returned it for this. Not sure If I made right choice.

  • Is this deal expired? Just went to buy it and it's unavailable. Fire Stick Lite is still available though.

You snooze you lose I guess.

    • still active! You may have to visit stores.

  • Looks like it’s expired, showing as $84 on the website.

    • Yesterday when I purchased it, the service desk guy said $84 but when he scanned it was $64. You should have seen look on his face.

It may have expired now but worth checking if you are up for it.

      • Oops never mind..

      • I have a feeling big W may have marked down the wrong model based on Amazon's current pricing… I got mine yesterday afternoon…

  • This or Google TV to run Plex in the kids room? Anyone with personal experience of both?

    • I am no expert but I've used both and I feel Jellyfin is much more user-friendly and completely free. There aren't some advanced features like plex but you will not be disappointed. Jellyfin is fork of Emby with clean ui and plays almost everything you throw at it.

      • I already have Plex running on my Nas so just looking for a stick to run that

  • +1

why did they increase the price from 64 to 84?

  • -1

I paid $97 from Amazon, I would recommend this over my Shield or Google TV.
