Seems like the lowest it's been for a while, and almost $75 cheaper than MWave at this point.
Unsure of warranty since it's shipped from US, and unsure of the power plug type of the product.

$750 for a DS920+? I'd love to know where, as the cheapest I've seen is $800.

2-bay is quite limiting, would probably invest a little more and get the 4-bay
would have to agree. You can build a PC for this price with more storage space and just run FreeNAS on it.
Agree this is quite a lot for a 2 bay NAS solution, you could buy an old server with dual CPU for a lot less, with great performance (if you have the rack space).
what about the power usage, does that make a big difference?
Building your own NAS vs getting a ready-made NAS in terms of hardware specs has no comparison as NAS companies charge a premium for support/updates on top of the higher cost of low quantity manufacturing of their hardware.
I tried Xenology/Synology for 2 months on my old PC, and it runs smoothly with software RAID. Then I decided to get a real NAS. But Synology does not have Intel i3/i5/i7 series CPU with a large amount of RAM to run my VMs. I went with a Qnap with i3/4GB RAM. Later, then upgraded to an i7/16GB. Great processing power and good networking speed with 4-gigabit port trunking.
The Qnap NAS cost more than $1.5k where the equivalent PC of a similar hardware spec at that time would have priced at about $600.
yeah, there are definitely cases where you will want to go for a ready-made NAS
Did you fall back to the DIY NAS?
I have no reason to fall back to DIY NAS as everyone in my family using it happily. VMs, Minecraft server, media server, Jenkins, git, VPN server, DVR, containers, ffmpeg ….
Good to know. I've Xpe.. too but now it blocks all attempt from desktop to go into login page, but everything seems ok with mobile app.
I've been planning to move on and get a proper basic NAS since I don't run VMs.@1cent2much: Xpe is not updated as often as it requires the mod of the bootloader. Going for a real NAS is a better option if you are not the only user.
Get a bigger capacity as you never know what is going add to the system later, and an upgrade is a pain. Luckily, I got one with 4 gigabit Ethernet to enable port trunking so that the 6 x 5Mpixel IP cameras can be recorded without affecting the network performance.

And yes, having a nice user experience for everyone at home is the need rather than saving of $.
And then you get done by the ech0raix or QLocker ransomware attacks and then you're really thrilled by the quality of vendor support.
2 bay without disks for $600+ is really not worth it unless there's some really good features in it.. 4 Bay Synology (lower model though) is $699 and rather this given you're limited by the network bandwidth anyway:

Why so much price increase from previous 2-bay model
DS920+ currently ~$750 through afterpay ebay 15% off if anybody is looking for 2 more bays.
Given the 920+ is often around ~$150 more I would encourage anybody considering this to go a 4 bay.
Unless you have a very specific need for this nas unit and confident you will never need the extra expansion.
