TCL 75" X915 8K UHD Android QLED TV $1995 @ The Good Guys

1650

Another 75" TCL TV deal. Again, seems like a crazy big discount - last time posted on Ozbargain was back in January for ~$1500 more.

Edit: looks like it has HDMI 2.1 as well, though "Clear Motion Rate" of 200, which might be a little problematic - help me out TV gurus! Detailed specification pdf here:

I'm actually looking for a 75" TV - this or the other deal I posted?

What is the proof that 8k is marketing BS on panels of this size?

      • +2

The fact that there's no real 8K content, yet people still buy them. You'd be better off buying a higher end 4K TV that has plenty of 4k content now.

      • Price, and the fact that it still looks like crap despite the resolution.

  • -2

No 8k viewing material, not even games exist yet.

No point to buy this for future proofing, as most TVs break in 5 years or less nowadays anyway.

    • What about the 8K home movies I record on my phone?

      • Very niche material and probably only interesting to you.
Better wait atleast 5 years until we get proper 8k movies and then 8k TVs will be cheap and affordable.

        • +2

others could be interested and depends what the contents of the 8K home movies.. ;)

        • you guys fail to understand that these 8k tv's have 8k upscaling from lower sources such as 1080p and 4k material, how good is it? idk

        • +1

So there is material then, because you said

          No 8k viewing material

          Which can't be true

  • 50% OFF on TV.

  • Seems like a bargain with the soundbar?
Even if there isn't any real 8k content

  • Fyi this tv is getting Google TV.

  • +2

lol, TV will probably break before 8K is a thing.

  • $5 cheaper at Appliance Central

The new mini led version of this TV is coming this year, so I guess they are clearing this model out?

How would this compare picture quality wise to the 65Q8 or 75Q8?

    • +1

Also interested to know how it compares to 75Q8

  • -1

    8K is a gimmick
As much as you lie to yourself otherwise, your eyes cannot perceive the difference to 4K

    • +2

You never know how it would turn out. Same was said of 4k to FullHD. Back then it was recommended 65 inch and larger screens need 4k, now that has dropped to 50 inch.
Some people here will also convince you that UHD disks is the way to go and 1080p is blurry in comparison.

Years down the track when 75 and 85 inch tvs are everywhere, some youtuber is gonna sway ozbargain opinions that 8k is necessary and 4k is too blurry for these larger size tvs. Just depends where the new marketing money is as to what people find clear/blurry.

At one time, it was accepted on this site that Apple's old retina resolution was the potential of the human eye lol.

      • SD to HD>>>>HD to UHD>>>>UHD to 8K
To justify 8K over UHD you need a 110” tv at 2 metres
It never ceases to amaze how ignorant people are of resolution & viewing distance

        • +3

It's not so much about being able to perceive individual pixels as it is about artificial sharpening and aliasing.
The smaller the 'grid' size, the more perceived sharpness of the image, but the sharpening is artificial due to the divvying up of the light into the pixel structure.

8K gives you a more accurate, less artificially sharpened image, with less aliasing. TVs are getting huge as well, with 100" and larger models coming, for projection and large screens, 8K would be nice, even just to hide the visible pixel structure you get @4K on a big screen, but that won't be affordable for a long time. We run an 8K JVC, and you can immediately see the difference when you switch from 4K to 8K, the pixel structure disappears completely, with upscaled 4K content looking better @8K than coming in native and displaying at 8K.

We scan film at 10K or 12K on and the difference is quite noticeable to scanning at 6K, especially with the representation of film grain.

However, there is no 8K content of any use right now, and unlikely to be for quite some time, so the TV mainly would have an advantage when looking at photographs taken with a good camera.

Personally right now I'd take a 4K high quality OLED over an LCD 8K screen, with colour accuracy, nits output and black levels making for a better viewing experience than extra resolution.
We master all of our stuff at 4K, and the high end 4K OLED's look nearly as good as our 40 grand grading panels.

Mind you the nits on our Dolby Pulsar are insane, not sure if people really want a 4000nits TV, it is literally blinding.

    • @75"> 8K is a nice to have. With up sampling and good firmware support it would be a winner IMO. 4K is ok to 75" and is best at 65" from 3m back.

With TVs going to 100" and over in the next 2 years, flirting with projector tech available now, 8K is needed, like Plasmas needed 1080P to 50" and 4K from that too 75"

  • How do you think it would go with a console (xbox) or PC plugged in? I know the 8k would be a bit pointless, but just wondering about input lag etc.

  • WTF only 450 nits, that is terrible for HDR, especially for LED.

    • +1

The 8K panel structure is really dense, I think it will take a high powered mini-LED backlight to be able to deliver decent HDR on 8K screens.

The reviews I've read of 8k have people raving. The trick will be in the upscale game, done either by the TV or a box of some kind eg nvidia. As for availability of content, it's a chicken and egg thing. More 8k TV's sold, more of a market for 8k.
If you buy this TV, you would probably want to invest in a multi-region bluray + UHD player that does a really good job of upscaling 1080p to 4k. Get into AV sites where people happy to swap their UHD disks. All this gets you to big 4k. Unless the TV does upscale to 8k really well, or nvidia/ps/xbox emerge in the next 2 years with 8k plus upscaling, you're probably better off investing in the best 4k 75" TV you can buy for the same money. And OLED makes me want to watch my whole movie collection again to see it properly.

  • i wonder how good is the 8k scaling, its suppose to scale 1080p source to 8k and 4k source could easiliy be bumped up too but i cant trust TCL with these claims until i see a good reputable review, i know if it was sony/LG/samsung making this claim it could be believable

Here a review of this TV in August last year when it was selling for $10k. Guy likes it:

    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/lifestyle/2020/08/review-shou…

And it does come with upscaling.

Be aware this TV has bloody aweful TCL firmware support and to be honest is shit in its current state BUT it will get an update to 11 googleTV and this MIGHT fix all the issues it has but as it is, out of the box, it crashes, locks up and is bloody horrible firmware problems and as yet TCL have no newer firmware for it…

So 2k, take a chance on it if your happy to sit on it until the firmware updates start rolling later in the year

So the good, High refresh rate, HDMI 2.1 so xbox/psX ready. QLED 8K so looks amazing, good CPU + 32gb so plenty of room for apps!

the shit, The current andriodOS sucks monkeyballs. Its NOT stable, it crashes and hangs! TCL support is call-centre, take all your info, ask a buzzillion questions and nothing they can do. If they told me that upfront I wouldnt worry about registering! Emailing them is best, but they keep sending me the same update info link that wont work on it.

Ive read that Andriod11 TV is comming one day for it but no other info asside from a website anoucement! For a premium TV and specs, its not ready for primetime IMO as it was sold. A common TCL problem. Hisense seems to be solwly abandoning their VIVVA OS thank god for Andriod (USA ANYWAY) but its AU OS and support is almost as bad! China wants our money but dont give a crap once they get it it seems! I do hope they can fix this, but waiting a year or more for a fix (sony is guilty of this too, so yeah) should have our regulators taking them to task IMO.

    • Yeah, I think most people run an AppleTV or Chromecast to avoid the problems.

  • Are there any TVs available with 120hz native refresh?

Was looking at this before it was reduced
    Weak points
! it is a gas guzzler very energy hungry -uses double the electricity of an Lg 75 8100 for example -important if tv is used 16 hours a day
The viewing angle is poor -important for most people. However if used in the bedroom facing in front should not be a problem
The upscaling of TCL has been ordinary in the past -hopefully they have caught up with this 8k model
the fact it is a 50 hz panel is a bummer -internally at TCL this model was described at 8k budget tv
So if not bothered by electricity consumption could still be a great tv
here is a great French review use Caption translate for English text

I settled on buying this tv - last time I bought one was 2009 and 46" in main living room is just to small!

Hopefully not a dud - good guys didn't have stock near my so Appliances Online matched and are delivering (free) next week.

Note to find a wallmount bracket…

  • Could Anybody please check the price on TGG Commercial for this TV and For TCL X10 75 inches. TIA

  • Has anyone who purchased this, received the TV yet ?

    • +1

Yep - very happy with mine. I was surprised with the Android TV - Very snappy. Picture is great too! The sound bar is great as well! Very happy for $2k.

      • So how do you rate the picture quality is it good on fast moving stuff like sports or action movies? Dont care about smart stuff but the upscaling on lower quality is it good?

        • +1

I have found it great! Haven't had any issues - watched Elysium, Tenet, Taxi Driver and Looper (I have been home sick since I received it) and there have all looked fantastic! Screen is super bright for 450nits.

          No complaints here whatsoever!
