Daiso Sydney, Buy Ten Get One Free

190

For those in Sydney, Daiso in Chatswood are giving away a voucher for a single item with the purchase of 10. Not hard to do if you're into nick nacks and Japanese lifestyle products. We bought 20 things which we never knew we needed. Take a trip to Japan without leaving Sydney. Good for a bit of change from same old, same old Westfields. Every items costs $2.80.

Noticed under the T&Cs that you must buy 6 items if you want to redeem the voucher which is not very fair IMO.

  • Thanks!
I love Daiso. Do they have any food products yet?

  • -1

    Cheap junk.

    • Agree, not going to neg the deal. But personal experience is 4/10 item didn't last over a month. So 9% off doesn't cut in.

      • +1

Well, considering that you have to buy a total of sixteen items, not ten, to fully redeem the offer, it's around 6% off, not 9% off. Sucks.

        • Ah dear, a consumer who bases their savings in proportions and not dollar amounts.

So all the 100 yen stuff costs $2.80 here? Wow…

    • +1

Yeah, this is essentially the Japanese "100 Yen Store" concept brought to Australia as a 200-and-something yen store.

  • why is daiso having a chinese new sale?

    • China aren't the only country to celebrate the lunar new year you know. It's a pretty big tradition in a few other asian countries.

    • because China is where a lot of it is made? Even if destined for the Japanese market primarily.

    • -2

Because Japan (and Korea) used to be part of China.
And japanese and koreans are technically chinese.

      • +2

careful with that comment. Essentially I could say the chinese are technically africans.

  • Is this Daiso store legit? Why does their website look so unprofessional compared to the site for the Melbourne stores (state-based rivalries aside)

    http://www.daisostore.com.au/index.html

    • Melbourne Daiso isn't affiliated with Daiso Japan. (and have been in Australia for longer)
The Chatswood Daiso is affiliated with Daiso Japan. (quite new)

true smart bargain hunter will not really shop at Daiso. I think??? the offer is also useless.

    at least i didn't

  • Daiso? The company that supplies all the ¥100 shops in Japan?

    ¥100 != $2.80

Still want to check it out though, I've missed the ¥100 shop so much since coming home to Australia…

  • Daiso-Japan is actually run by Chinese. If you look at their webpage top right corner where the language selection is it has 3 languages: Japanese (written in Chinese, not Japanese kanji), English and Chinese (written in Chinese characters).
This would be why they are celebrating the Chinese New Year, as Japanese don't normally celebrate. They celebrate the new year the same time as we do.
Also Diaso-Japan being run by Chinese may explain the inferior quality of their products, as Japanese Diaso item's that I've encounted while in Japan were of fair quality even though they were manufactured in China for the Japanese market. A lot better quality than Chinese products found in most other dollar discount stores…

Oh and to more than confirm that it's run by Chinese, the Japanese language used on the site is incorrect, more akin to what we would know as "Engrish" but in Japanese, um "Chipanese"?

    • "Engrish" is actually Romaji. It is what japs use to pronounce what sounds a bit like English, because in Japanese there are no Ls, they use Rs (and a bunch of other sounds).
Japanese Kanji is the same as Chinese, although Kanji does not use the entire Chinese alphabet and the pronunciation is obviously different.
I think you are correct though, that Daiso Japan - the Sydney Chatswood one are owned and operated by Chinese people, but they have their inventory sent by Daiso Japan.
Japanese people use a mix of hiragana (the smooth curly characters), katakana (roomaji, -> romanization of japanese characters to sound like english words) and kanji.
