Asus Zenbook 13" i5 (UX31E-RV009) 128GB SSD - 15% off: $1180 Free Shipping - Dick Smith

70

Dick Smith are having a laptop sale "up to %20 on selected models".
This worked quite well for me as I was just about to buy the Asus Zenbook 13" for my inlaws for $1390 (regular price) when I stepped into Dick Smith in Innalloo WA yesterday to have a look and found out that it had 15% off to an amazing $1180… Was so stoked!
I also asked about extended warranty and they wanted $220 extra (but were willing to knock $10 off).

Ended up going to JB and getting them to price match the Asus + $189 for the extended warranty (2 years). I do believe their warranty is a little bit better although I have not confirmed this. All in all it came down to $1369 with 3 years warranty - bargain!

Cheapest on Static Ice is $1359.

  • What's the standard warranty on these? Is it asus's 2 year global? Or 1 year local?

    • +1

      2 Year global for sure.
Looks like OP got trolled by the JB Hifi sales guy into thinking it only comes with 1 year global

      • and he was about to pay price as well (never heard of haggling? this is a PC not apple)

        • hey, I went in there with the intention of haggling… however we are going oversees tomorrow and I want to claim GST, therefor if no one would badge I would have paid the price seeing that is the cheapest I could find.
All the smart asses around here come out after you made a purchase, it is impossible to know all this info before hand (I also posted in whirlpool asking for receipts etc.).

$189 for the extended warranty (2 years)
All in all it came down to $1369 with 3 years warranty - bargain!

Dude, the Zenbook comes with 2 year global warranty on its own.
And people have been able to get the UX31 i5 128GB SSD when it came out for $1100 at some JB Hifis in melb (although their HQ apparently sent some gay email about it being a "false receipt" to stop the low profits)

    • +1

With a global warranty wouldn't it be cheaper to import?

      • +2

        Yep it's cheaper to import.

        Here are my calculations
        http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/821614-REG/ASUS_UX31E_…
        $1019 + $79.66 [shipping, prices in US]
        = $1098.66 [USD]
        1,098.66 USD = 1,027.53 AUD [According to xe.com]
Previously, the original RRP of 1100 USD incurred GST + customs fee for paying GST (woo! government money reaper!), the reduced price in America now, is sufficiently low that it does not incur GST, since the AUD VALUE of the item itself is (1,019.00 USD = 953.045 AUD, XE rates)

So effectively, you'd save around $150 AUD, but you'd have to find an Australian plug to shove onto the American plug, or just use it with an adapter.
I have bought an ASUS laptop from bhphotovideo before, and also one from Amazon via priceusa, both have been fine with the ASUS service center.
There is no "Australian Stock", they're all Made in China, just region-specific models.
Looks like Australian stock only comes with 1-year.

To anyone who's interested in the "false receipt" which isn't actually false:

        • +1

So essentially its cheaper to import, and you get the 2-year global warranty as opposed to the 1-year local warranty.

        • +1

          @Ambiguous
It looks like its only 1-year global as well.. review sites all said 2-year global, that's why I thought it was 2-years as well.
The Global ASUS Site says 2 years, I've had a look around, looks like the Americans only get 1-year as well.
Differences in the product: Adapter plug, that's it.

BHPhotovideo seems to say Americans also get ADP, which is Accidental Damage Protection (only if you live in America as well)
          ASUS Warranty
The warranty from ASUS features a full year of accidental damage from handling coverage, a 30-day zero bright dot pixel guarantee and 24/7 technical support

          Ah ok cheers mate.

  • I've got this laptop - brilliant!

  • Both jb and Dick Smith told me it comes with 1 year warranty…. If anyone can prove that it comes with 2 I'd really like to know so i can go back there!
In regards to 1100 receipts i haven't seen any, this is concrete on their web site, anyone can use that to price match.
If there are any receipts out there for less please do post or link!

    • Bam.

JBHifi HQ being dickheads have also been mentioned here on WP
      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1708589&p…
To not price match an apparently fake receipt which it clearly isn't because there are a couple (the above link isn't the only one) on whirlpool.

Zoom in on the date, it says 12/11/11.
That's in November, a couple of weeks after they got the laptop into Australia.
It is now approximately 2.75 months after that receipt, and yet, we're apparently jumping on a "bargain" that's more expensive than that old price. Yet, with the current price imported from America, using UPS Worldwide Expedited, or you can go a bit more and spend $30 more on UPS Worldwide Saver, you'd still save quite a considerable amount.

One of the sexiest looking laptops around.

  • Great laptop, one of the only ultrabooks that can stand up to the macbook air. Beware though, lots of reviews mention a flaky trackpad (that has apparently been fixed with a driver update - be sure to apply that) and an unresponsive keyboard that misses light keystrokes. But for this price I'd say it's worth it.

Also worth noting, they may be clearing stock to make way for a new revision announced at CES http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/asus-ux21-ux31-laptop-hot…
Although you'll probably have to pay RRP for the new revision.

    • +2

you never pay RRP for anything unless you are in the US.

In australia only a fool doesnt haggle

  • I managed to get one 1.5 weeks ago at $1147.5 when the local JB was having 15% off ticketed price promotion on laptop.

great unit! love the high res. only negative I have is the lcd screen is not as clear and bright as a macbook air.

Sound is bloody awesome for a laptop.

This is the normal price you would get at jb hifi if you go in and bargain.

Check out Whirlpool, there are many receipts up there for $1150.
I have also seen receipts for the 256gb version for around $1650.

Was contemplating this VS macbook air (running only windows) for a very long time. Went with the MBA because of the screen clarity.

    • I did actually went in and bargained before trying to price match, just to see what I'll manage to get. They wouldn't really come down on price (Innalloo WA). Even when price matching he would not go under the exact match, saying that's the best he can do.
      Maybe I'm just not a good bargainer… :-<

      • +1

approach a different guy next time and then go to a different store. If you are not a good bargainer, just remeber theres more than 1 greedy salesguy that can help you

  • +1

Just compare the keyboard to a MacBook Air at JB or DSE. You'll see how crap it is (low travel).

ps with DSE being sold, might be more bargains on the way! :)
