    it says $386 now.

  • It is nice to see it is getting even cheaper.

dslr cheaper than some compact digital cameras. what is this world coming to.

    I remember the day when a D1x was $12,000

    • +4

The world is coming to an end - remember the dilemma of 2012..

Its cheaper because they want people to capture their last moment in better quality.. :)

      • pics or it didn't happen.

        • He'll send you the photos after the 21st of December.

      • +2

then just wait for the 'end of the world sale'… apparently everything is discounted by 100%.

        • +1

          100% off…aaaaerrggghhh…(drool)

DSLR'S 'mirror-swinging-in-a-dusty-barn' technology is going the way of Leo Da Vinci

The new digital systems will be much faster at capturing images - you just wont be able to tell the Pros from the n00bs as easily ;-)

    • the guy i bought a d1x from paid $14000 for his.

I gave him $800 for it 6 years later.

wow! for an entry lvl camera this is great!

    Haha damn! I paid $398!

If you're a beginner, this is excellent!

Here's a link to a photo I took with this exact camera on Australia Day:

      awesome photo!

      • hey! thank you! haha my first DSLR thanks to OzBargain! :D

        • Just wondering, What ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed would you typically use to take a photo like this?

    • Was it taken with kit lens?

      • yeah the Single Lens 18-55mm provided :)

    • Taken using Tv mode (shutter priority) - makes sense. That kit lens will need the shutter opens a bit longer to capture it. Nice scene.

The following was taken using a low end point and shoot camera (dirt cheap one), also using Tv mode (shutter priority) - less than half the cost…

1100D at this price is a great deal, but the lens is rather average. Would be interesting to see a shot with some nice bokeh with 1100D - that's something a point and shoot camera cannot do (at least not easily).

    • I saw that photo somewhere, on news.com.au? That's quite a famous photo now! Nice work :)

  • Too bad I already have 2 cameras :(

      That's no excuse ;)

Good deal from HN which is really rare…. Who want to take bets on when HN will follow DS and start closing stores. ill give it 6 Months

    • Nah, once HN start doing online retail in a large scale, they'll survive well.

  • Just be sure to read the Reviews, at least one of which says this camera has a cheap plasticy feel.

Maybe go hold one in your hand, before deciding to buy one… at any price. :-/

    • It does have cheap camera feels you don't expect much for this price DSLR

    • The camera does not have a cheap "plasticy" feel in my opinion …also for this price, no one should be complaining haha :)

I've been using mine for exactly a week, it's an amazingly fun camera to use :D

      BUYYY IT!

      • +1

name the Nikon you can buy for $386… you can't

    • All entry level DSLRs will have a cheap plastic feel. If you want rugged build/weatherproofing, be prepared to pay a lot more.

      • Indeed, it is not as robust as the cameras costing 10 times more. But, the important bit to me is that the internals are almost the same. Most importantly the sensor. You will lose a bit in the amount and speed of autofocus points and possible on some external control wheels. But with a good lens, you won't lose any in the actual image quality. Having said that, you should definitely budget another $100 or so for the 50mm 1.8 lens.

      • also, note that alll DSLRs are not a substitute for a point-and-shoot for convenient, fast shots — they are mostly bulky unless you pay for a fixed 'pancake; lens, the viewfinder is the only way to operate them, rather than the LCD (or it slows frame rate abominably), and video is a joke (the processor overheats and shuts down after a few minutes of video shooting) — the only exception to this are the Sony NEX/Olympus PEN/Nikon V1 'hybrid' cameras, which appear to be the trend for future models. in short this Canon is a great entry level to complement a quality compact camera.

  • Very very good price.

  • bought one at the city sydney one in MLC building.. sold out but they put a back order on..

  • this would be quite light for an slr, which makes is easier to carry

$368 receipt from end of last year if still possible to price match —> http://img807.imageshack.us/img807/284/img20120108213545.jpg

ps the lens is VERY slow to focus.

    • Yeah, it is a pity the included lens is below average (for DSLR). I told a friend about the deal (when it was $399). I asked him to try it out. The focus / auto-focus was too slow for him. He wants to take photos of his son, who generally moves a lot.

But at this price, you cannot expect a decent lens.

      • +15

This camera works great on my kid. Lucky he's a bit slow

        • like father like son? :P

  • +1

Great price great camera! Loving it so far! We all start somewhere, I am not forking out $600+ for a camera. Rather that $200 go to the $199 3G Netbook.

  • I would grab one if red is available?

anyone know does harvey norman have this in RED colour?

    • As far as I am aware they don't (or at least most stores don't).

    • About a week ago at Auburn HN I think I saw a metal briefcase with the red one in it. Something about a special edition package…

  • Hope it keeps dropping in price closer to October when I head overseas and can get a refund on the GST. Anyone know how far in advance you can buy something and still claim it? A few years back it was 3 months but not sure what it's at now

    • +1

      1 month/ possibly 28 days

      • Thanks mate, looks like I'll be holding off for a while and hoping something good comes out :)

    • it's no more than 30 days before departure: http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4646.asp
I'm also wondering if it will still be on sale in 9 days time, I suspect given the GST refund is only $35 it's probably better to buy it now in my case.

  • +1

I bought this at $398 last week. Lucky I got price protection I'm going straight back to them and getting $13 back.

    • Nowheredotcom. How did you get price protection?I got this camera last week I also want to get my 13$ back:)

  • @Nowheredotcom.How did you get price protection?I got this camera last week I also want to get my 13$ back:)

  • Wth I I called up hn yesterday and they said absolutely no can do on the previous sale due to it finishing… So this is a new sale? If so I'm going to hn first thing tomolo

  • +1

Get it! I got it last week when it was on sale for $398 from Hardly Normal.

If you're a newbie to DSLR's (like me), you wont mind its supposed "plasticky feel". It does the job.

Here's one I took of my wife's dad dipping into a bowl of prawn crackers - on CA (creative auto) mode, using the lens (18-55mm) that came with the camera. Now I'm not very clever with taking photos, but it's so easy to take a decent looking shot with these things…

    https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150617406010348&se…

  • Sigh too bad I'm in Paris right now… Would be great to just whack a nifty fifty on it permanently for another $100~ and get some decent bokeh photos!

  • -1

I am newbie to DSLR, but I got myself 600D, I know I paid $850, but thinking about I don't have to upgrade in next few years…. 1100D is ok for entry lvl… for me it just doesn't feel worth that money….

    • +6

Justify your purchase, justify the hell out of it!

  • It is an awesome camera for the price. And I personally love the plastic construction. It's grippy enough, and it's damned light.

Only let down is the lack of IS in the lens. I bought one at the $398 price, and am getting a Tamron superzoom and selling the kit lens.

  • People are talking about this being reasonable slow to focus. Can someone please give an idea how slow? Any difference in time than that with a point and shoot cheapie camera?

Does something like this go out of date?

    • Basically, to test it, you take as many single shots as possible (not using the burst mode). When you are ready to take a photo, the DSLR should focus quickly and take the shot.

My friend who complained about the slow auto focus basically felt that after he pressed the shutter button down fully and it took a while before the DSLR to take a photo (it takes a noticable time to focus) - to the extent that he felt that the DSLR + that particular lens combination does not seem to offer speed advantage of his point and shoot. This was inside a Harvey Norman shop (indoor with decent amount of light, but still cannot compare to outdoor settings).

With DSLR, if you picked Auto mode and the camera cannot find proper focus, it does not let you take the shot. The included lens is not fast at focusing and the 9 point AF with 1 cross type AF does not really help.

      • They way you should use it (and I think you can with 1100D too, at least you can with 550D) is to assign focusing on a different button, the *-button usually. That way you can decide when you want to re-focus and it does not happen every time you half-press the shutter. Normally you'd use your thumb on the *- button, focus once and then fire away with the shutter. Or, have the AF in tracking mode, in which case you'd keep the * pressed and let the camera do the tracking. Now this is obviously where the lens or the camera can be too slow to focus.

    • It focuses about a zillion times quicker than a P&S. That's one of the main reasons to own a DSLR.

If it wasn't for auto-focus speed, I would be happy with my S90.

      • Auto-focus speed can be quite subjective. Best way is to try it out.

If the sales person can change the lens for you (and let you try), do that. I reckon it will make a big difference.

Otherwise, try 600D (or even better 60D) to get a feel of the difference (the kit lens for those are slightly better). 60D's focus system is superior.

Anyway, already mentioned in the $398 deal post comments, at this price, you are really just paying for the camera, the lens is a freebie pretty much so don't expect normal DSLR performance with that lens.

The lens is probably a key reason why they haven't sold out everywhere. It is hard to impress someone with that lens (I tried to convince my friend… and failed).

  • +1

This price is for a non-IS kit lens. My friend who own several SLR cameras said it's the worst kind there is.

    • +1

reminder: this is entry level thus for people who own zero slr cam before.

  • +2

Appears to be expired on the website
if you try to add it to cart it's now $486

  • +2

Yes I had the same issue,
    It has $386 http://www.harveynorman.com.au/cameras/cameras/digital-slrs

When you add it to cart it registers as $486
    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/canon-eos-1100d-dslr-camera-b…

  • gone up to $486

  • I was finally able to pick one up at hn sunshine (Vic) 10 mins ago still $386…. They also said they had a few left

    • The promotion is not end yet. I rang a guy from HN QV Vic and he said the promotion would last till 13 Feb!

  • Hi fchis,

You happen to catch the sale persons name for reference at HN QV VIC?

    • unfortunately no, i know he works at the computer department.

  • broadway in brisbane had a few left in stock, just picked one up.

    • rodh - broadway in brisbane had a few left in stock, just picked one up

      Was it $386 or $486?

  • Chirnside Vic Still have 14 in stock, they are advertising for $398, but if you show them the website anomolie (ie. $386, then $486) they should honour the price as they did for me.

  • Picked one up this morning at HN QV VIC. Still $386(didn't show anything before the saleman said the price). Didn't ask how many have left, but I think they still got stock, the sales said they had lots of stock came in before Christmas, thats why they doing at this price.

    • The other part of the story is that Canon is giving Harvey Norman some rebate selling those cameras. That's why they are so cheap.

Some of the HN stores will change the price soon - even though they certainly can continue to sell them at the discounted price.

  • Just bought one from city west wa. They have "plenty in stock ".

  • Just called HN Canberra (Fyshwick). They tell me the price will go back up to $486 tomorrow.

    • No problem getting one from HN Woden late this afternoon. Salesperson even thought that they were $368 until he checked… All good!

  • Just bought one, but the 18-55mm len does not have "image Stabilizer switch"……

    • It is not an IS lens, thus why it is cheap!

      • if I knew it, I wouldn't buy this rubbish.

I've unpacked the box, Can I still return it ?

        Please help.

        a 18-55mm IS lens costs 1xx AUD….

        • +1

Check HN's return policy. If you can pack everything up properly, you should be able to get a refund by AUS law.

However, as mentioned before, at this price, the lens is pretty much a throw in - you cannot get just the camera body at this price. If you are considering getting a better lens - I would suggest that you DON'T get the 18-55mm IS lens. That one is not much better - it just has IS. Good lenses are expensive. Any L series lens you get will cost more than the camera itself - though L series lenses are probably a bit of overkill for this camera.

Without IS, you should still be able to get decent photos. Some ways to take better photos without IS: 1. Hold your breath. 2. Use delay shot 3. Get a remote control for the camera and use it 4. Use tripod 5. Use the burst shot mode and take multiple shots - pretty sure one of them would be sharp enough.

Yes, the lens is bad… but your hands are good.

        • +1

People, please don't be mental. The lens is just fine. It has excellent optics, just no IS. So use it in well-lit places only.

No reasonably priced zoom is going to give you low-light performance anyway. That's why god invented the 50mm f/1.8

        • I doubt you will see the difference between images taken by this lens and one with IS. I think alot of people who judge this camera think that unless it has every single feature it is a sub-par camera. That really is not the case. Have you even tried taking some photos? Give it a go and see if IS would have made your photos "better". I doubt it.

  • +1

got the last one from HN Warwick WA 2hrs ago, Joondalup still got 7 left. nothing to complain at this price. lol…

  • Guys , we are cheated, since all reviews on the internet are based on IS lens, not this crappy Len.

    Beware !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • This lens is identical to the IS one, just without the IS. As long as you keep shutter speed at 1/80 or faster, IS makes no difference.

  • I decided to sell this kit,
I bought it today for 386, now I will sell it for 350
But U need to pick it up, hmmm. I live in Riverton, WA, 6148

pm me if your r interested

    • Why would you do that?

      • a IS 18-55mm would cost me 150+
        386+150 = 536, that's a bit over price for a 1 year old low end camera.
I can't take any good photos without IS just like I can't work without calculator.
I will take it back to HN tomorrow for refund, I wish they could.

there are many situation that you dont have time to do preparation. you need to pick up the camera immediately and press the button. moreover, IS is useless while taking photos on train

  • @netsurfer
thanks for suggestion, I should read all comments before getting it.
I just checked the price of L lens on amazon.com. WoW….

  • Anyone want to purchase this camera from me? hoping for 396 as it is only a week old and barely used (plus it seems harvey norman is back up to 496 anyway. invoice provided (purchased 25/01/2012). Looking to pick up the 550d so quick sale in melb needed can meet up anytime between now and 6pm.
