The new 16in Macbook Pro is rumoured to be released third quarter 2021 but not yet confirmed by Apple.

Link to OW MacBook Pro 2019 16" Core i7 512 GB $2997 ($200 cheaper than Apple refurbished store)

Obviously clearance price for these Intel ones. The i9 are the current top off the shelf Macbook Pro with all the bells and whistles that RRP over $4K, might be ideal for people who need it now for school, work or EOFY tax claims so cannot wait for the new model which likely costs over $4 grands.

The hard core OB'er would use this price to either:
*Price match at HN then pay with the current HN 7% cashback GCs from Shopback app (max denomination $500 so not too many vouchers to scan) or
*Price match at JB and then pay with 3% cashback JB GCs from Shopback app (max denomination $1000).

Seeing how brand new 16inch models have plummeted in price does not make me feel good about resale value for mine lol

Don’t worry too much about it, with Intel inside it can be repurposed easily. Also expecting higher inflation coming in the next few years and should support resale value of almost everything else.

      • not when a cheap m1 macbook air is faster .

It’s amazing that the top spec MacBook Pro only has 16Gb of memory. The same amount the top spec MacBook Pro had in 2014.

That would be pretty bad, but it isn't the case. OP's MBP is a long way from the top of the line MBP. If you've got $9K to spare you can buy this fully optioned 16" MBP.

top off the shelf Macbook Pro

Vs CTO where the limit is your credit card max limit ;-)

      • I got $10768 when I added in the software options.

I was trying to not go overboard.

At this price just buy a razer studio book which is basically the same thing externally but with beefier specs

        • Isn't razor studio book more than double the price??

    • To be fair though macOS is less demanding than Windows so it matters less

Even if you assume windows idles at ~3GB and macos at anything under that, having 16 vs 32 GB is barely impacted by baseline ram usage on both OS's. Modern operating systems use free ram when idle for a variety of reasons and free up ram when its needed by other programmes. In fact it would seem macos idles at higher ram usage.

If youre doing video editing, music production, 3d graphics, etc, 16gb barely cuts it regardless of the os (and this is where i say gnu+linux out performs both windows and macos in equivalent hardware).

        • Ubuntu 20 desktop ram system requirements are higher than windows 10. Catalina ram requirements are same as Ubuntu 20. Nothing lean about Ubuntu desktop resource usage these days. The whole Ubuntu 20 gnome is ordinary in terms of responsiveness.,

          • @g1: Who said you have to use ubuntu? Bloated and gnome sucks.
Manjaro kde is way less resource intensive and overall a better genetic recommendation than ubuntu (although i prefer pure arch i understand not everyone can install it).

            • @Jenny Death: xfce works even faster if you are running it on the older system.

              • @DmytroP: I'd argue the opposite is true. Kde uses less ram by default and is more optimised than xfce. Moreso if you use any kde programmes at all.

            • @Jenny Death: No one said you need to use Ubuntu. Not all Linux installations outperform Win or OSX is the point.

              • @g1: Outperform at what? Ubuntu running resolve or blender will beat windows in render times.

                • @Jenny Death: Exactly, at what? Linux is not universally better. And Linux performance varies between distros.
This: "and this is where i say gnu+linux out performs both windows and macos in equivalent hardware" is not universally true.

                  • @g1: I listed the tasks that Im measuring performance in, so Im not sure of your points?

        • I don't know how, but the M1 Macbook Air I have is able to edit 4k videos etc and it's only got 8GB memory. Scrubs perfectly smooth and renders and exports so damn fast. I can't believe it's only 8GB.

          • @bunnybash: I'd expect the application has been carefully optimized to run on 8GB, plus it may add quite a bit of load on SSD for swap. Except of RAM compression approaches, ARM/m1 compiled applications would use approximately the same amount of RAM as x86/64 ones.

It would depend a lot on the application and tasks you are using, 8-16GB may be sufficient for many for some time but some tasks would certainly require more. (Otherwise, the m1 air is amazing, very happy with mine as well).

          • @bunnybash: Is the sample rate set to 4k for the scrubber timeline? What codec and bitrate is the source?

You don’t want this. You either want to wait or get the m1.

It's like buying a PowerPC based Mac after it switched to Intel. Will be supported for a while but I'd not spend 3.5k on the deprecated system.

      • Why not? You could easily install windows on this and have a solid laptop for years to come.

        • Because for 3.5k you can get a waaaaay better Windows laptop.

        • With 16GB of non upgradable RAM, it's not a very solid amount even now, I'd not expect it to be sufficient for years to come.

        • because in 4 months the m1 version will come out and blow this out the water and for less money !

    M1 (or M1X, M2) not inside
