Goes well with the current sale on Gift Cards at Woolies too - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/625408

  • +3

Big-W had it for this price for a couple of weeks and they weren't selling any on their eBay store. They only started selling when the price was further reduced to $424 from this expired deal- https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/619579

I don't think many people want the series S (for this price).

    • +2

Of course, when you see S is available everywhere, you know not many are interested. Or those interested already brought it. The rest are not

    • +3

I don't have a 4K tv yet so I am tempted by the S, its just the tiny 512gb SSD stopping me…..and the super expensive extra storage. I mainly use game pass now so not fussed by the lack of disc drive but might as well get an X if need to buy additional storage anyway.

I'm keeping an eye on FB marketplace, some go around $300-350

      • To me. It's just the fact it's white lol. Otherwise I would have got one for my occasional couch tv game with gamepass.

        • Put a skin on it, or just take the shell off and paint it.

      • +2

I got one for $250 off marketplace to play gamepass, definitely worth it at that. Play it a lot more than my ps5 at present. At RRP I would push the X for the extra storage, disc drive and resale if you ever wanted to sell.

        • .. you got a series S for $250?.

          That's a good price!

          • @PuppieWayne: Yeah, was hanging out for a good deal! I see quite a few around not far over $300 though.

  • I'm a playstation guy, but am considering getting an S for some exclusives. Probably need a bigger discount or good bundle to jump on an S though

    • +1

They go used on Gumtree for as little as $300.

    • +2

Xbox no longer has exclusives as they all come to PC now, once PC part prices go down I think it's worth looking into

      • +1

Exclusive to console, not a hard concept to understand. Sony games are releasing on PC now, does that mean the Playstation also has no exclusives?

        • +2

Please note how I said all of them are coming to PC, which is now the case.
Playstation is only a handfull of games so far but hopefully is all games one day.

      • +1

This!! xbox is a useless paperweight and a waste of money.
PC/PS5/Switch is the only combo you need

    • +1

Read staticzavenger comments. Don't waste your money!

  • +1

Good price for someone looking for it.

But it doesn't look too good when after 6 months from launch the console is already on sale.

  • -2

Is this the current or previous model. Can't keep up with the Xbox numbering

  • +2

If only they added the Bluray drive. What a stupid decision from MS.

    • -7

Or if they finally moved to universal game purchase. Buy once and use on either PlayStation, Xbox or switch

      • They do that with some PC and Xbox games. Buy on Xbox and you can also play on PC version through Microsoft Store
But of course they have no say in the PlayStation, Switch or Steam versions.

  • +2

I picked up the Series S in the Big W deal for $424 which I am treating as the Game Pass/Exclusives machine (mainly since I am more a PlayStation player). I also paired it with a $49 WD 500GB Passport SSD which was $49, and just downloaded a whole heap of Xbox One and Series games onto it. Running it through a 1080p secondary TV seems like it will run pretty well. Only real issue I have found with it so far is that I personally hate the storage options on Xbox compared to PlayStation, as making an external drive your primary install location causes any Optimised for Series X/S titles to flat out not install without any notification if you add them to a queue and put your console into rest mode to download overnight (although directly downloading them without being in a queue does prompt a message saying to install to internal storage).

Also, I would highly recommend getting the Series S (with Game Pass) over an Xbox One X for anyone looking at jumping into one of these consoles at the moment, as even though the Series S is not as powerful Gigaflop-wise as the One X, you are going to future proof being able to play Series X/S titles into the future, where the One X will be obsolete in the next couple of years. Or if you are all about the higher resolutions and framerates, then hold out for a Series X.

    • +3

Can you even download a PS5 game to external storage? Xbox storage options are a hundred times better than PS5. I currently have 2 x 4TB External HDD's, a 1TB Sandisk SSD and the Seagate 1TB Expansion card connected to my Series X.

      • +2

        That seems excessive

        • +1

Maybe, but the Xbox gives me the option to do it.

      • +1

PS5 has the option to at least download all PS4 titles to external storage (I'm using a Samsung T5 1TB), and I haven't had a single issue with it. I think PS5 may be limited to 1 external storage device rather than multiple like Xbox has (but don't quote me on that). The last big update on PS5 did allow moving PS5 games to external storage, so for people with capped/slow internet, that can be useful for them (although Xbox had that at launch).

And yeah, I was just personally annoyed after going from PS5 to Xbox Series S that they couldn't nicely handle the queing system for downloading games nicely (or at least telling me about it when I turned it back on)… but then again, that was probably just due to getting a new console and downloading all the things on first load, so it probably isn't going to be an issue after that.

      • +2

Yes PS5 games can be downloaded to external storage just like Xbox. You just cannot play from the external storage. The PS5 game must then be transferred back to the internal when wanting to play.

    • I also paired it with a $49 WD 500GB Passport SSD which was $49

      Lol

      • +1

Can I get a price check on the $49 WD 500GB Passport?

        • Edit: missed the joke, lol

  • I am actually tempted by this…

  • +1

stock won't run out for this no one wants a Xbox series S. we all want SERIES X!! models.

    • +3

no one wants a Xbox series S

Wrong. As per comments above. Fantastic exclusively for gamepass or where you dont have the right tv. I have one in the spare bedroom

  • +1

Since i received my xbox series x yesterday, it is an AMAZING machine. Ive basically loaded it with my gamepass, over 600gb of games. That being said.. if you don't have a 4k 120hz TV or need 1tb of space a series S would be more than enough.

    • +2

You don't need a 4K 120hz TV to take advantage of the XSX. The XSX will look and play better than a XSS even if you are using a 1080p screen, as the games will still render at 4K then be downsampled to the screen resolution . Then for BC, the XSS uses the XB1S version of the game, which normally looks terrible compared to the XB1X version of the game that the XSX will run.

  • I'm still using my Xbox One S. I have an early generation 4K TV which only supports 4K on its inbuilt apps (eg. Netflix), it won't support it from an external source oddly.

I'm so impressed with Game Pass but only been playing on my mobile (via game stream) in place of Nintendo Switch (which is sadly now gathering dust). I can't imagine there'll be any improvement in the mobile streaming from One S to Series S apart from load times.

FOMO vs Need…. the age old battle.

EDIT: Are game pass games different from One and Series machines? I know there's some different titles for PC.

    • +1

Very slightly at the moment, as any "next-gen only" games will not be available on the Xbox One where they will be on the Series S/X. That being said, I think there is only a handful of games it affects at the moment, like The Medium.

  • +1

It annoys me that this is the sale price, I'm cool with +50% markup over USD unit price to cover exchange and GST, plus a little more for regional cost of sale. But to markup an extra +$50 on top of us paying more from our weak dollar is scummy.

Relative to he Series X this console is shit for $500, mainly because of the extremely limited storage and high price to upgrade the NVME that is slower than the one I got in my computer a year before this came out.

I was dead set getting one for the bedroom but I was anticipating A$399 to match the Canadian C$379 markup, with A$449 a consideration.

I ended up getting the Series X and I am glad I did for A$749, but I won't be bothering with a bedroom Series S outside of heavy sale now that I know that it doesn't play One X version of games, it plays the One S settings.

    • +1

I got my Series S first, which was really great, coming from a One S. But I do agree that $499 is too expensive for this system.
I upgraded to the Series X once they became available, which is even better.
If you can afford it the Series X offers much better value for money even at the $250 premium. If someone can't stretch the extra $250 the Series S is a solid Gamepass machine.

  • Same price on amazon too

  • I like my series S. Bought mine with another controller for 350 off gumtree. Worth it at that price for a game pass machine.350 new is the right price I think I sold my xbox one for 200 so it was a small price to pay

  • this or X?

I only play Fifa and watch youtube

    • +1

Do you want Fifa on disk or soft copy?

      • well I don't really mind

        • +3

          Get the series s.

          • @silverrat23: Agreed and see if you can pick one up for under $400 on Marketplace or Gumtree.

  • Tempted, but I'm turned off by MSs very invasive DRM

    • That is really only an issue on the series x if you're trying to play physical games offline. The 'S' is all digital anyway no disc drive so you will have be always online to download your games anyway.

    • Also people have used 360 discs as an example. The whole way BC works is that the disk is just used to confirm ownership, then the game is downloaded. Once it is downloaded you don't need to connect to the internet to play the 360 game, just put the disc in. Funny people complaining about the Xbox needing to be online sometimes when they are complaining via the internet. Surely you should send your responses to Ozbargain in letter form via Aust Post.

True. Never trust corrupt m$, have never brought anything from satanic$oft ever!

  • +1

Blown away with my Series S - Skipped last gen Xbox all together and blown away at how flawlessly everything just works. Combined with Game pass, Emulation Support and my pretty casual gaming habit (only a handful of hours a week) it has far exceeded my expectations and will 100% be purchasing a Xbox Series X slim or whatever the upgrade is in a few years time.

  • Got mine yesterday off Gumtree, brand new sealed for $400. So bloody impressed with it. The upscaling on my 4K TV looks absolutely adequate, and this is going to be my gaming machine for the next few years.

Also happy enough with the internal storage given I have the 1TB hard drive plugged in. When most games are Series S/X Optimised in the future, it might get a little bit tougher, but it's great that you can transfer these on and off the drive. When we all have affordable gigabit internet, things will be cruisy.

  • Patiently waiting for revision edition for series S.

Seeing this is already discounted, and going below rrp on scum tree and other places and it’s still available anytime you wish to buy and the reviews tells me something is wrong with this one.

I personally think it’s over priced for the specifications and needing fancy expansion options.

  • Where's the xblock fanboys whinging about PS5 digital edition having no physical thus Sony having total control, don't see you kids doing the same here. Hypocrite!

    • You obviously care more than they do…

  • No 5% off coupon for console.
