Overdrive has a "rent with kindle" button that fufills through amazon and then syncs the book. No need for the app but yeah its not all done through the device
You can send overdrive books to kindle e-reader in the US but not (yet) for Australia.
I tend to use Calibre to convert drm-free epub to mobi format. That might be an option for you but it's an additional step.

Yeah, the Kindle Paperwhite 8GB WiFi was $149 in October 2020 vs $169 now.
The bezels on this are gigantic. Anyway purchased from JB HiFi for $149 using Amex offer of $20 cash back.
Would love to get one of these for the wife, but confused when looking up capability for borrowing from libraries via overdrive/libby. I can see the overdrive app on amazon, but is that for the fire tablet only?
Is there any native way on a kindle ereader to borrow from local libraries like kobo can?
