    Ho Jiak is wayyyyyyy overpriced

    • yea i feel the same way, i live in Strathfield and have eaten there and even i think its over priced for asian food.

      • what about quality though?
Junda is quite popular on insta

        • nyeh not really authentic Malaysian taste

    • +3

Don't really have a problem with the prices but the taste is nothing special. As ozbargainers we all love bargains myself included but all the cheap places would be exploiting their employees big time.

      • Yeah I was underwhelmed by the CKT, mie goreng and laksa. Really liked the KFC rendang though.

If anyone has recs, post them!

        • +2

If I want to eat rendang, I'll go to Pondok Buyung in Anzac Parade, Kensington. Cheap and authentic. Can't go wrong with that.

    • Completely disagree.

It's pricey but the quality of the food and ingredients are way better than other Malaysian restaurants I've tried in Sydney. Most other Malaysian restaurants tend to cut corners in some aspects resulting in food that are decent but not quite there. I find Ho Jiak does not compromise at all so their flavours are really authentic (although they tend to jazz it up with fancy meats such as lobster, marron, KFC, etc). I'm from a Singaporean, Malaysian and Indonesian background so I know the authentic flavour.

Definitely not an everyday food because of the price but worthwhile going there on special occasions.

  • Love Ho Jiak but haven't been in quite a while. Will definitely need to head back and try this out

Ho Jiak is pricey, don't get me wrong. It is also fantastic. People seem to have much more of an issue with expensive Asian cuisine as opposed to European stuff, the one exception being Japanese food.

    • +7

This 100% and it pisses be so much. It's as if people have the ingrained mentality that European food is inherently high class and therefore they can charge high prices. Yes some asian restaurants have poor service and ugly fitouts but even amazing asian restaurants with million dollar cutouts get accused of "overcharging for asian food". No idea why people complain when a bowl of noodles costs more than $15 either and have no problems paying $25 for plain pasta or cacio e Pepe which probably requires less ingredient cost and skill to cook.

those comments belong in the same bucket as "you're attractive… for an asian" and "you speak good english for an asian"

        • Yep but also in the past asians were probably two willing to laugh along and cop these "jokes". If anyone was going to say anything like that to me now they would be looking at a fight.

        • +1

whilst not a fan of those comments, they cut both ways.

i.e. if you spend any length of time in asia as a foreigner you'll often get "you're attractive for a white person" or "you speak Japanese well for a foreigner" etc. etc.

Not suggesting it is acceptable, however, you'd be remiss to suggest it is necessarily a white-centric view point.

          • @Bargain Slut: I think the other way is more understandable.

Japan is mostly made up of Japanese people, a small subset are foreigners and even smaller subset are fluent Japanese speakers.

Whereas it is very common for an Asian person to be speaking English in an English speaking country like here.

I haven't heard the attractive for a white person thing because I'm not white, but that is definitely equally as bad as the other way around. Comment about languages e.g. "you speak Korean well for a white person" is a lot less of a bad thing I think, when it is the other way around.

            • +1

@Yanoflies: I speak Japanese & Mandarin, I also look white as hell. More than a bit hypocritical to suggest that it's OK in one direction but not OK in the other, don't get me wrong - 1000% there are privileges to being white in Asia, that definitely don't exist the other way around.

There is, however, still a significant amount of racism towards foreigners in many Asian countries.

This doesn't make it acceptable in either scenario.

              • @Bargain Slut: There is definitely a huge amount of racism towards foreigners in most of the Asian countries, which I most definitely agree is very unacceptable.

I was only referring to your specific example — it's all opinions at the end of the day but I just don't think it's fair to compare both sides in the same manner.

When we remove the unmeasurable ethical factor and only look at the numbers: it is, by many orders of magnitude, much rarer for a foreigner to be fluent in an Asian language as opposed to the opposite. So surprise in seeing a foreigner speak Mandarin or any other Asiatic languages is in my opinion a lot less ignorant than the opposite (especially mathematically). I agree it is 100% prejudice and discrimination but I'm just saying it's a lot more understandable.

Here's a very interesting visualisation of languages spoken in the world: https://www.visualcapitalist.com/100-most-spoken-languages/ — note the proportion of native vs non-native speakers for English and Mandarin, very drastic.

And not so meaningful but also interesting regarding amount of non-native Mandarin speakers in Australia: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-06-24/fact-checka-are-there…

          • @Bargain Slut: I agree with this comment. Also I have friends who have Italian backgrounds but are Australian and when they go to Italy they get treated like crap for not being ‘real’ Italians. It’s not just Asian sentiments.

    • Simple reason for this, there are thousands of the same restaurants competing, it’s just a supply and demand thing. Go to Newtown and see the over supply of Thai restaurants for example. You don’t see a street of Russian or Mongolian restaurants or even a street of Italian places.

  • I bought a care package from Liven worth $40. Do you think they’d let me pay the balance with that?

    • liven is paid by credit card.

    • +1

Yes. I did this today. Went from $94 total bill - $50 dine voucher - $40 care package = paid $4 today. So all up i paid $24 for a $94 meal!

I saw the bookings list for tonight and errrryone on the list was using double voucher code.

  • Where do you enter the code?
Is it just the reservation comments?

    • Good question, I've just emailed them to double check.

  • +2

The one at strathfield is so meh I think even instant miegoreng kicks their ass. Lucky I had a 2 for 1 liven deal too. Otherwise god

    • you can call it Meh Ho Jiak… LoL

    • Just wondering how did you receive the 2 for 1 liven deal? Couldn't see that deal on my liven app. Thanks

      • During the specials liven had during the lunar New Year. And new year 2021.

        • Oh cool! Thanks.

  • Cant seem to find out online but just wanted to ask, does anyone know if the double offer is per person i.e if 2 of us have the voucher its $100 free value or is it 1 voucher per table booking? Thanks in advance.

    • Did you ever find out the answer?

      • They allow maximum 2 vouchers per table.

  • +1

Can op please update the post and put the word “DOUBLE” into the promo code just to make it super clear for everyone?

There are cases where they refuse to double the voucher value for making a booking without the promo code (which, as discussed here in the comments, needs to be put on the Reservation Notes section).

Plus, you need to book online in order to double the voucher value. You can’t just rock up to the store without booking and expect to get this promo.
