I'd prefer to spend the extra $12 and get it locally, but I suppose that's OK.

Good price, but I still prefer then Kindle Keyboard. The new version has reduced battery life, half the storage (2GB) and has absolutely no audio features (no read-aloud and no mp3 playback).

    • Agreed, the Kindle 4 is a cut down, cheapy version of the 3 that loses more functionality than it does price. One of the BigW refurbished Kindle 3s is a much better bet.

Of the new Kindles in the US, the only one really worth it is the Kindle Touch - the 4 is too cut down and the Fire is too limited relative to its similarly priced open Android Tablet competitors.

      • I have a Fire and it's fantastic for it's price. And I haven't bothered to hack it or use a US Amazon account. The only thing that doesn't work here yet is the streaming service.

yeah less storage is a bummer and no speakers.

I just picked up from Big W the refurbished Kindle 3 with keyboard. it is perfect!

could check that out if anyone is interested. Still heaps of them at Big W Raymond Terrace (haha)

  • +1 on the K3 refurbs, got one for the lady for christmas, smarter option & it's a better unit with keyboard and more memory & speakers, is in brand new condition and they come with 12 months warranty.

    I prefer the Sony ereader.

    • Me too but there is a significant price differance so it's not for everyone

I have a 3rd generation Kindle and I don't really find the keyboard all that useful. I generally use it to read, no type.

    • My wife uses the keyboard all the time to search out books on Amazon, also she sometimes uses it to browse

  • just get the touch with a shipping forwarding company… best of all worlds… my daughter is loving hers

    • Which shipping forwarding company did you use and what did the total price end up for getting the touch (no ad-version i presume)?

  • Bought the new Kindle Touch from the US and have been pleased with it. Cost the same as buying this model locally.

    • you also use a shipping forward?

      • Ebay - it was easier.

  • anyone know where to get a CHEAP (& good enough) Kindle 3?
    Cheers :)

  • Give me a good price on a Kindle Touch damnit… yeah they can be forwarded with a shipping company, but it doesn't make much sense to force that extra 50-70 onto the price when it's almost exactly the same as this version.

    • Got mine through ebay. Seller seemed to be making $10 on each unit and then charged reasonable shipping. Ended up costing around $140 delivered.

  • The kindle 4 is significantly smaller and lighter than the kindle 3. The features missing/downgraded were in my opinion not worth the extra size.

I don’t listen to audiobooks, or any audio on my reader. A phone or audio player will do this better anyway.

The ability to only store only 1000 books doesn't phase me either; they would become a nightmare to navigate. I manage my library on PC, acquiring new books, organising old ones. This makes the keyboard and huge storage unnecessary for me.

The battery lasts over 1 month. In what circumstance can someone see this as not being enough?

Vs. The Touch: the lack of page turn buttons converted me to the basic model. Anything the touch can do, my phone can do better, and its more comfy to hit the buttons on the side, I feel.

I got the K3 for my mum, and now she wants my K4. If you need audio books or music, and don't have a smartphone, then K3 is a good deal. If not for either of those, then I feel the K4 is a better buy.

  • This product just doesn't light my Fire.

  • One thing not mentioned here about the Kindle 4 specs - the page turns are smoother and faster than Kindle 3.

As a Kindle 3 wifi/3G owner, I would also be happy using the Kindle 4. Battery life is still phenomenal (compared to tablets), still has stacks of memory (I've barely used mine on my K3, and I have hundreds of books), physical keyboard is gone on the K4 but the advantage is you have a lighter, thinner, smaller device that you are much more likely to throw in your bag and carry around. I think the Kindle 4 is a great model!

So, the main difference between K3 and K4 are the keyboard - do you absolutely need a physical keyboard? It makes buying books, using wikipedia, taking notes, and surfing the web easier on the Kindle. The Kindle 4's "virtual" keyboard is ok (hunt and peck style with the 4 way controller) so you still can do it, just takes a little longer.

    Personally, I don't mind this.

When the keyboard appears, it takes up a lot of space on the screen.
