Magicbox Tower - DAB+ iPhone/iPod Dock - $69 Delivered

70

Magicbox Tower iPod/iPhone Dock with DAB+/FM Tuner - $69 delivered from graysonline.com (not an auction). Item is new with 12 month warranty.

I've been looking at these for a long time, but don't really need it so couldn't justify it at previous prices.

It's about the cheapest iPhone/iPod dock with DAB+ radio that I am aware of (there's a Kogan alternative on eBay around this price as well i think). It gets relatively good reviews, most detractors point to it only having one speaker (5W), but they also say it's plenty loud enough for bedroom / desk radio. It has a very small footprint which I need (I have a very small desk!). It doesn't have internet radio, but i have an iPhone which provides that for the rare times that I need it.

At $69, it's the cheapest price I've seen this worldwide. It generally goes for about £50-£80 in the UK for a DAB version (Magicbox are a UK company). In Australia, the cheapest on staticice is $188.85 from RYDA, and it's on www.dealsking.com.au for $158 plus shipping. graysonline.com had it for $109 before Christmas.

  • Magicbox site says DAB and grays says dab+. Seems a little odd.

    • many DAB radios are upgradeable to DAB+
The UK uses DAB, and is obviously a larger market than we are, so it may be that they are targeting the website to the Brits.

      • It wouldnt be easy for an individual to upgrade a DAB radio to DAB+.

What do you mean many DAB radios are upgradable? If you are looking at the current range on UK radios in Australia that have been upgraded to DAB+ the majority of radios are from the UK.

Its good to see the Sony's that are DAB/DAB+ as these radios should work in both Aus and the UK.

    • UK currently doesn't use DAB+, so the UK version is DAB, not DAB+.

I contacted magicbox about this a while back because I wanted to import one. They have a different version for AU/UK (and where-ever else they sell it based on the DAB version in the market). They confirmed that the UK version won't work in Australia.

      here's the email:
      Hi,
Thank you for your email about the Magicbox Tower product. The Tower product sold in Australia is different to the one sold in the UK. The UK model is DAB only and will not work in Australia and the Australian model is DAB+.

      Best Regards

  • Does anyone know if their products have a remote control with it?

    • This product doesn't, but another magicbox dock thingy does:
      http://www.graysonline.com/retail/NocturneXP1/audio-tv-and-h…

      • Ahhh ok… but a lot more expensive. If the cheaper ones had a remote I'd be poorer by now!

Kogan's can play internet radio and network streaming too for around that price. With the $49 for $100 voucher it worked out to be around $100+.

        • Yep - no doubt that the kogan provides more functionality for the money, so the only reason for getting the magicbox is if it's significantly better quality. You wouldn't know unless you live near RYDA in Sydney as they're the only store I know that sells them (and the RRP of these things is ridiculous so you can't trust that as a guide!).
