  • I don't know much about networking…

i just bought the TP link mesh deco m5 deal just then…

Would this router be helpful to replace my Archer VR1600v (came with internet). Currently with NBN FTTN.

I have a colourbond shed 20m at the back of the house i want to have wifi and also stronger signal in the bedrooms.

Would this router plus deco m5 be a good combo?

Or just the mesh plugged to my current router be sufficient.

note: my pc is connected to ethernet to router and my tv which streams 4k netflix is very close to router. Those are my main usages.

    Cheers in advance

    • +3

Neither the Deco M5 or Xiaomi will replace the VR1600v. Plug in the Deco M5 or Xiaomi into the VR1600v and turn on bridge mode on the VR1600v.

    • +3

Yeah Twix is right. You still need a modem which is your VR1600v.

But you can use a separate router in bridge mode.

Here is a guide on how to do it. Another person above wanted to know the same thing.

      thanks for the replies !

  • Does anyone know if this router supports the VoIP phone service that I subscribe to as part of my FTTC NBN package(Aussie broadband) ?
    (Sorry I’m a tech noob)
I have the white box provided by NBN and the AussieBB router is connected to it. Can I just swap out the AussieBB router and plug this in it’s place(including the VoIP phone)?
    Thanks!!

    • Hi drvw,
You won't be able to run VoIP services through this router unfortunately.

If you want you can connect the Mi Router to your Aussie Broadband, and use it as a wireless access point for your WiFi devices. While keeping your VoIP connected to the Aussie Broadband router.

    • +1

You can replace your current modem/router but the Xiaomi router doesn’t support voip out of the box.

I am assuming you have a regular phone handset?. What you will need to do is order an ata voip phone adapter from Aussie Broadband, they will configure all the settings for you just give them your account details when you call.

Grandstream HT812 VoIP Phone Adapter is what they sell.

Once you receive it, you plug your phone into the voip adapter and plug the voip adapter into a spare port on your Xiaomi router. That’s all you have to do, it should then work automatically. It’s very simple to do.

  • seems like it'll run open-wrt…. but what about other stuff?

need to move from an asus running merlin-wrt with diversion ad blocking and skynet firewall amongst other stuff… is that pretty standard under normal open-wrt?

  • great price!
but I don't need one now.

    if you buy two,can build a mesh AX3600 network(updat the firmware?),only cost $200!
I think one asus or netgear mesh cost more than this

  • Had to return mine got it from AliExpress . Streaming movies on wifi from my server was the worst . Was even outperformed by the free router from Exetel.

    • I think this is an important point. For a router the stability and load is more important than fancy specs imho. My guess is many people jumping on this deal who don’t have more than 100Mbps internet will not get much benefit, if at all, from this router compared to their current ones, unless the old one is really bad.

  • Does anyone know if this would have better range than the Asus RT-AC68U? Looking for an upgrade since I've been having issues recently

    • +1

I just got one and I'm running ac68u now, I'll let you know in a few days

  • -1

Copped one. Is this the cheapest its ever been?

  • Would this be an upgrade over a Nighthawk R700P using on iiNet NBN HFC… just have a weak spot in one room in the house. Currently using an extender.

Lack of USB is annoying tho…

    Any shipping costs to SA?

    • *R7000P. Also interested in any similar experiences though, I have the same router currently.

      • Same. Although my issue with the R7000P is that it isn't very stable - I need to reboot it about once a week as it seems to stuggle with the number of devices I have (70+ over gigE and wifi, and two additional generic APs via ethernet)

        • took risk, ordered, made it.

    • Xiaomi Mi won't work out the box if your iiNet NBN is using VLAN 802.1q. Purchase Asus and TP-Link if you want USB ports and need ISP compatibility with VLAN 802.1q.

      • How do find out if my NBN is using VLAN 802.1q?

        • Login to the Nighthawk and check if VLAN is enabled.

  • Was considering buying the TP Link AX5400 (Archer AX73) from GG Commercial @$212, but this seems to be much better value for money.

  • Woah. Just signed with Superloop and got the eero. However location of NBN NTD (HFC to premise) is opposite end of the house. Was thinking of getting a cable run, however will 2 of these work by using the ethernet port to the computer and then 'wifi' to the other AX3600 with Gigabit speed?

  • Whats this like compared to the TP Link C3150? My TP Link is good, i just dont get the 1000/50 like i do when i connect directly to the NBN, i average around 450/20

  • +1

You get a backdoor, I get a backdoor. We all get a backdoor

  • I got one last Oct, very stable

  • I have the Telstra SMG2 white box and currently have 1000/50 plan but naturally can’t get anywhere near this on wifi one room away behind a brick wall.

Will going AX help get better speed as I can not route cable for Ethernet so need a solid wifi solution for one PC only and maybe phone.

Will need to upgrade the internal Pcie card as well I assume to get most benefit? Perhaps external antenna closer to the doorway would help too?

    • Wi-Fi 6 will help increase speed. You need a internal Wi-Fi 6 PCIe adapter for the PC and a phone with Wi-Fi 6 built in.

  • OP, seems no more pickup available in NSW

      Hi jl434,

Checking if have more stock on Monday to dispatch online orders, before we put in more in Auburn store for pick up, stay tuned.

      Thanks.

      • i have FTTC, can i connect WAN port directly to this router? my Tenda Mesh wifi cant be connected to WAN port directly so have to use a Telstra smart modem. interested in buying 3 to replace my Tendas. thanks

        • +1

You can directly connect the Xiaomi or Tenda to the NCD on FTTC.

          • @Twix: with Tenda i keep getting yellow light on the NCD, the moment i connect the smart modem it just works fine. i have Tenda MW3 any help would be great.

            • +1

@Godgodgod: Step 1: remove the Telstra modem.
Step 2: wait at least 30 minutes.
Step 3: uninstall and reinstall Tenda Wi-Fi.
Step 4: reset the MW3 to default.
Step 5: plug in the MW3 to the NCD.
Step 6: configure the MW3 with Tenda Wi-Fi.

              • @Twix: cheers. just a noob question why 30 minutes?

  • Doh, sold out while I was processing my order :(

    • +2

      Hi noipster,

Checking if we can put in more, stay tuned.

      Thanks.

      • Thanks mate. Looks like I missed out again though haha. Next time :)

  • Too late - dam it.

Sold out and back up to $149.

  • Seems like OOS online

  • looks like it sold out while I was doing some research on it :(
been waiting on an asus ax deal for too long

  • +1

Back in stock, picked one up. Thanks OP!

  • Picked up one thanks!

Deal has been ozbargained, again… 300pcs in 3 hours! We only have 50 units we can afford to run on this promo special. Thanks for all the support!

    • +1

Thanks for the great price. I have ordered one as well. Been wanting to try out a WiFi6 router for a while. :)

    • It’s a very good deal, I would’ve bought one as well but already paid for a different router recently.

  • -6

Almost certain it comes with CCP's homekit-rootkit bells and whistles.

  • Hows it compared to Fritzbox 7390? Use - 100mbps NBN

    • +1

Too late now but just checked, your modem/router is over 10 years old and still uses Wifi N. Almost any modern router would be an upgrade (minus VOIP and other features).

  • 300pcs in 3 hours! We only have 50 units we can afford to run on this promo special.

what does this mean? if I was one of the 2nd lot of 250 people I may be waiting longer?

    • Yeah from context I believe OP meant they originally had 300 units ear marked for this deal but then added an additional 50 units after the original 300 allocation was sold out/ozbargained but can’t afford to sell anymore than that at this price.

So I think they sold 350 units of this router.

Nah you should be good on getting it as soon as everyone else.

    • +1

First batch of 300 are sold out already.
They are bringing out another 50 for promotion.

  • +2

I just cancelled my order. Going to get the AX6000 instead after realising it's just 50-60 bucks more.

Someone might be the lucky one to take my spot.

    • +1

did you found where to get it? I'd do same if its not waiting for weeks for shipping and GUI is not in Chinese

      • I personally like and use the chinese firmware. It allows for stronger signal broadcasting compared to global version. The router used to struggle to go through 2 rooms. Not anymore now.

    • where are you getting the AX6000 from for $150-160?

      • aliexpress; $110 add $50 to $60 makes it more ~$160 to ~$170

        see this old ozbargain post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/605216 ;

        trying myself, when factored in with shipping and GST comes to exactly $137.26 usd (same as in title);

checking VISA rates today without bank fee per ING site : 1 United States Dollar = 1.2960069978 Australian Dollar ; ~177.89AUD

prob throw in some aliexpress cashback

        • prob throw in some aliexpress cashback

Only works if the seller is part of the cashback program (i.e. commission-able).

  • Amazing deal for a great router. Bought it from aliexpress for $140. So this is an incredible deal indeed for local au stock and support.
The router is really great. Using it for 1 month and amazed with the performance and features.

  • -2

For all silly downvoters who didn't like my callout that Xiaomi products may have CCP endorsed backdoors/rootkits - read about their other product and how it collects your data and uploads onto Chinese servers. https://www.kaspersky.com/blog/xiaomi-mi-robot-hacked/20632/

    • +1

Lol, so it's been proven that their robot vacs upload your wifi passwords to their servers in china. I'd hate to imagine was their routers are doing/capable of doing.

But hey, offer the product for $100 less than a respected competitor and dummy's will jump all over it as it's such a "bargain". 🙄

  • Do we need to worry abt a secret chip that's been baked in by CCP?

    • Yes, however somehow it's "racist" to say that, so you are getting downvoted for it.

      • with 300 sold in 3hrs do you think these 'racist' comments matter?

        • Doesn't anyone get a joke. Everyone knows the CCP are spying on us anyway. Lol

          • @mckayver: and yet people give a free past to the Five Eyes?

            curious

  • Get a Ruckus wifi and don't worry about coverage anymore. My R510 covered everywhere of my house perfectly. 90% residential customer will not worry about wifi roaming.

  • Even at $139 is about the same price as AliExpress. Still a deal with out waiting 3 weeks from China.

  • Dang great

  • No USB 3 port nor type C one for external drives is a big let down for a enthusiast in me.

  • Damn.. missed out :(

  • When will these be shipped out?

    • received mine (sydney metro) today.

    • Hey lufee,

All orders for the routers should be all sent out now.

Are you able to provide us with your order number and we can help check the status of the order for you.

      Thanks.

  • Got mine today, very happy with this. Didn't boost my internet speeds (knew it wouldn't, my old RT-AC68U wasn't that bad anyway and could easily handle whatever speeds NBN throws at it), but way better wifi coverage and being able to achieve a gigabit connection over wifi 6 is great for $99.

QoS is definitely a bit primitive compared to other routers on the market, but I think the price justifies this.

  • Got mine today, to my surprise it does let you select the vlan tag during initial setup (good for those TPG users)
    My ax6000 did not

    • What is the vlan tag of tpg? Mine is not working… :(

      • VLAN 802.1q for TPG = 2

    • Can you check what firmware version it is using? I am running version 3.0.22 global and saw no vlan tag support on initial setup or in the regular administration pages.

  • Any chance of an offer rerun?

  • Mines running slow… I'm trying to download the cod patch with the xiaomi router (ethernet cable) i'm only getting 1-2MB/s but if i plug directly to my ISP router I get 12MB/s.
    Any ideas?
