Quick definitions/ translation for easy reference (this is based on very general usage and content commonly found on internet):

samosa = a fried pastry with a savoury filling, such as spiced potatoes, onions, peas, etc and had with (tamarind + dates) chutney or (coriander + mint + green chilli) chutney
paneer = cottage cheese
aloo = potato
pakora / vada = fritters
roti / chapati = flatbreads made with wheat-flour dough
paratha = unleavened flatbreads which are cooked with oil, butter or ghee on flat pan. They are more oily and thicker than plain rotis. Parathas can be stuffed or plain. Often had as breakfast.
tikki = patties
idli = type of savoury ricecakes, made by steaming a batter consisting of fermented black lentils (de-husked) and rice. Often had as breakfast, more commonly in Southern India.

    Good Find OP, nice work on the translations

    The parathas are really good for quick snack or just with tea

    Love the Sabrini Chilli Milli Samosas too my fav

    Way cheaper than the local Indian stores

  • What sauce would everyone recommend for the samosa?

    • +3

      Samosas are usually spicy so I prefer tamarind and/or date chutney…

    • Or coriander chutney

    • +5

      Mint/coriander chutney that might be included in some haldiram samosa packs… otherwise I go the good old tomato sauce.
      Tamarind chutney also tastes nice if you have access to it.
      Edit: beaten by few seconds

    • Goes well with the bbq sauce too as it's almost similar to the tamarind chutney

    • Tomato sauce

    • Try Maggi Hot and Sweet chilli sauce (available from Indian grocery stores). You will not go back to regular Tomato sauce after this.

      EDIT: Looks like its also available from Woolies

    • thansk for all the suggestions everyone will give it a go

  • Just got a few packs, hopefully they taste authentic

    Any south east melbourne coles where you get these?

  • +5

    +1 for the 'glossary of terms'

    Great effort on the description, OP, thanks.

  • The last time I bought the spinach pakoras they tasted of mould…had to convince myself to keep eating every time, and finally threw it away after going through half the pack. Not sure if it was just that one pack been left outside then chucked back in the freezer or something…

    The samosas were good though.

  • I've had the parathas - they were super yummy in the air fryer

  • What's Lachcha?

    • +1

      Lachha paratha is generally made of wheat and it has multiple layers because of the style it is prepared, it's crispy from outside and a little soft from inside.

  • Not sure which stores in South Australia have these items.
    Just checked about 4, none had these haldiram items 😞

    • Edwardstown and Marion has them for sure.

  • Any recommended store in Melbourne’s Western suburbs

    • +1

      Can anyone comment of quality of Sabrini vs Haldriam?

      • People rated Sabrini over Haldiram (from what I remember previous deals)

  • Does anyone else find these prices inflated?
    I got the Haldiram's Punjabi Samosa, 8 per pk, 650gm - $5 (RRP $10)(shop.coles.com.au) for $5 from Aldi last Dec-Feb without any half price offers
    and Sabrini half price items at Coles are about the same price at my local Indian stores

    • +1

      yh that's the way coles and woolies operate. Inflate prices and offer "50% off"

    • Aldi ones had lesser quantity

  • I bought Haldiram's Samosa's from costco, tried them yesterday. Confirm they are really yummy when baked in the oven.
    Paid $11.49 for 18 pieces. Which works out a couple of cents dearer each than these on special at Coles

  • These supermarket stuff is really good rather than local Indian groceries.
