In my opinion, not worth it to buy a laptop around this price range, better to spend around $500.

You mean spec range not price range right? ;) The lower the price the better..its trying to get higher specs for lower prices that's the tricky part.

    • To each their own as far as what they want to use it for.

    • +4

well, some people don't really want to strech that extra $156 given their situation (ie, it's for their kids or parents to surf the net or basic document editing ). I rekon this laptop can do things that most of higher end specs laptop can do.

      • Good point…

We've just heard reports that - in South Australia - folks, who couldn't pay Electricity and/or Gas utility bills - & had these services Cut-Off
        - have tended (in recent months) NOT to get 'em reconnected…

I think the times are worse than we like to think…

PS OTOH, aren't there some grants or is it tax breaks for parents who buy computers for their kids' educational needs?

IMO considering the weight, i would prefer something with more specs to make a point out of lugging that comp. or opting for an ultrabook $1000+ or a tablet

      then again.-> IMO <-

  • most users (facebook and general browsing) wont notice a difference anyway. is this noisy or quiet?

  • +3

it has no hdmi which is a real killer for people who have big lcds

    • +2

There is a HDMI adapter that you can buy which you can plug into the laptop to use for HDMI screens. But it may block adjacent USB ports.

      • Typical config's put 1 USB port on one edge of the laptop & 2 on another edge, so, the single-port edge may be the one to plug into.

  • if you guys really want hdmi* and discrete…

    $399

same acer quality (LOL!) but with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 512MB

i'm pretty sure it has hdmi as some web pics of it shows it but unless you see it on the shop model i wouldn't trust it

probably worth the $50 extra IMO

      "same acer quality (LOL!) "

I do IT support for some very large companies and after seeing the return/fault rate on almost every brand of laptop I'd buy an Acer, a Toshiba or a Lenovo well before I'd consider any other brand at all.

      • eMachices is Acer?

      • Why not asus? Normally they're pretty good quality.

note i dont have any asus products.

        • What about Dell?

        • +1 ASUS (eg, 10.1' Eee PC netbooks)

At the moment, however, I've learned to HATE Compaq's low-end notebook… this one's had a touch-panel button go "hard" months back… so far, the other button is OK… not great… just OK.

You shouldn't have to buy a mouse when a box has one (in the form of a touch-pad) build-in !!!

  • For anyone looking to buy an Acer laptop, there is cashback on a lot of models. Retailers don't know anything and hence won't tell you anything.

Can get this compaq with a printer for $338 from Australia post

  • Nice find. Cheap price. You can't complain for what it is.

  • so confused.. This looks like a real great price for the specs. I need a laptop for yr 12 just for school work, maybe a bit of media and skype. That's about it. Anyone think this is a good buy for that? and if I do go to the store and ask them for a cheaper price PLUS go after the cashback, would the price be around 280-300? just wondering. Would anyone recommend this?

Nothing to be confused about, for that purpose and much more this would do just fine! Honestly, for the price you can't really go wrong. We have had Acer gear at work for years now, we have negligible trouble with any of it, laptops included.

You'll always get people who say Acer is crap because their uncle's cousin's aunty's mate's brother's wife's sister once met a bloke at the pub who knew a guy who heard that they were crap! Ignore them, they know nothing…anyone with any real experience will tell you they're just fine, well on par with other consumer grade laptops. The naysayers will also trot out an old Squaretrade study that shows Acer being on par with HP…IIRC it's so old it was written in Sanskrit on bloody papyrus! ;)

I have a friend who just showed me their fantastic COTD Toshi laptop with essentially the same specs as this…with shipping I think they paid almost double this price. :p

The only brand I wouldn't touch is HP/Compaq…not necessarily because of build quality (but IME it's not great anyway), HP Aust are reknowned for piss-poor customer service & warranty on consumer grade laptops…warranty (even extended) is useless if the manufacturer won't come to the party! :s

        thanks mate! really helped!

looking at the link provided you will see there's no cashback

    • We like SMALLER size portables… we got by with a 10.1" ASUS Eee PC netbook for a few years. Sturdy, fast to connect; a bit slow with 20+ brower tab-windows open, but nice & light.

Maybe look at an i5-baser ASUS with 13" screen & 4 GB memory. Some are light & slim, but no less sturdy. (I like the brand.)

I'm looking for a Windows-based tablet, but prices have sky-rocketed on them.

      • If you can find a 13" screen laptop with this cpu for the same price (even it has 512k RAM), please let me know and I will buy it.

I think this is a good deal for its price. You can consider P6200 being a enhanced edition of a core 2 duo even less power consumption. I just upgrade my laptop from core 2 duo T8100 to i7-2630QM (previous Lenovo deal from Centrecom) and I can tell you there is NO difference for day to day use. I watch FULL HD movies (10G+) via HDMI while having all my Messengers/Downloaders/Torrents. Sometimes I dont even close the youtube pages on IE for a while (15 pages for 3 weeks). The 3 years old T8100 can tank this without any problem (cpu usage never goes up to 70%). For the graphic card part I really think thats individual preference. A lot of people simply think that it is always good to have dedicated graphics but for people who doesnt play major 3D games I bet you want a intel IGP. The intel IGP can keep your laptop cool as well as using less power. The only drawback is that integrated graphic uses memory from your system and in this case I think 2G is sub-par. Acer build quality is not that bad, I know they dont have fancy designs but they dont have major problems either.

I would recommend this laptop with an extra 2G of RAM. You can easily buy it from MSY ($14).

I also read in comment above, someone mentioned a Compaq with a printer from Auspost. Dude, its a E-350 which is basically an Atom.

This is comparable to the Lenovo G570 from MSY now. (Intel B950/2G/500G $349 after cashback). The G570 has HDMI though this one includes delivery and no need for cashback.

    Hope this helps.

    • Actually I think the B950's graphic core is slightly better than the P6200. http://compare-processors.com/intel-pentium-b940-vs-p6200-co…

In this case, the G570 wins but still this is a decent deal.

    • lol

      nice post.

      but yes i agree. i upgraded from a core 2 duo to a i7.
      from 4gb to 8gb.
      1gb gfx to a 1 gb gfx.

but things still seem the same. not much better speed performance.

    • I honestly think the only demand left for powerful CPU is enterprise computing eg.Servers n large scale graphic/model design…

The ivy-bridge has a 3%-7% edge over sandy which makes it more obvious…

  • can you actually upgrade the ram on this laptop?

    • You actually can. However, originally it can be a 1x2G or 2x1G setup. If its a 2x1G that means you have to buy 2x2G ram and replace both of them.

    • yea you should be able to.

most laptops have 2 ram slots.

      so you can have 2 X 4gb = 8gb max for now.

  • Anyone know if this has an external VGA port?

    • It does have VGA. Most laptops do.

  • How would this one compare
looking in this price range too,

    http://www.orangeit.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?products…

    • seems pretty damn good for the specs. However is HP any good?

    • Try to avoid AMD cpus for any laptop
