  • Nice find! Just out of interest (and given the high impedance), what headphone amplifier will you be using to drive these babies?

    • +1

I recently acquired the Asus Xonar STX for $80 (second) and hence hunger for good headphone. I have already the Sennheiser 590 and the Sony MDR-F1 but would like to test out this high OHM headphone that I believe is better as most high end headphones have high impedance.

      • I think you'll find that your sound card won't be powerful enough to drive a 600 ohm pair of headphones. You'd best start trying to find an amplifier to drive them properly.

        • Like the Beyer Dynamic A1?

        • Actually the asus xonar is plenty powerful enough to drive a 600 ohm headphone

        • I have received it today and will test it out tonight after work.

        • I had it in 600 ohm +18db and it is uncomfortably loud at 60% volume. I am going to let this burn in over the next few weeks to months and see what it can do but at the moment the high pitch is rather sharp and this should smooth out a bit over time. The listening level I am comfortable with is around 35%.

        • You should if possible really try it out with an amp connected to the line out, it could sound better.
The fact that it is loud enough does not (necessary) mean the soundcard has enough juice to run the cans. For example I have 150ohm headphones that can run at a decent volume out of my phone, but it sounds s&%t. Out of the STX it sounds sweet. With an amp it sounds even sweeter.

Note if you were happy with the sound I wouldn't suggest anything, I'm just bringing this up because at the moment you might not be getting the full potential of these cans.

If you are interested you can read the following relevant articles:

PS those cans are known to be quite bright, you might just not like their sound signature

        • ory_zm it did went through my mind that good amp may make a different as it has good continuous supply of power that is ready for the demanding music. Same goes with Xonar STX which I believe will sound different depending on whether it can get good power supply from the pc or poor supply from a cheap power source. I believe a good amp can also make a difference but not sure which one to get as I am not ready to spend too much and is looking at something in the order of < $500, any suggestion?

The sound produced by the Xonar STX is very strong and dynamic in that the treble and bass sounds very solid.

        • Yes, 2 solid recommendations would be:
          Objective 2 - http://www.jdslabs.com/item.php?fetchitem=O2Full
          Matrix M-Stage - http://headphones.com.au/psingle?productID=527

I would however urge you to check first whether an amp does improve your sound - it might not be a significant difference.

  • I do have a headphone amp, but the 32 OHM version is more portable. Does the 600 OHM have better sound quality?

  • planar magnetic drivers?

    • +2

Definition: A planar magnetic driver is a type of speaker used for midrange and treble that is made of a thin-film diaphragm stretched over a frame and sandwiched between an array of very strong magnets. The thin-film is similar to Mylar, although various manufacturers use different materials. The voice coil is spread across the thin-film. The interaction between the thin-film and the magnets causes the diaphragm to move, thus creating sound. A planar magnetic driver is similar to a ribbon driver, although a ribbon driver is made of a thin-film of aluminum placed between two powerful magnets.

This is why I love OzBargain. The users give me better service than a brick and mortar shop.

        • because they don't have any incentive to bullshit you in order to get a sale!

  • How do these compare to the DT770s?

    • Dt770s are closed, these are open. Depending on your application, they both have pros and cons…

      • Producing & mixing music?

        • .

        • Well mixing and producing are 2 very different activities…
I wouldn't actually go with either for producing they aren't neutral enough. And they seem too posh to do any mixing with if that makes any sense (I own a pair of DT770).
On the closed side the Audio Technica M50s are excellent for both mixing and producing:
http://headphones.com.au/psingle?productID=319 (don't let the price fool you, these are great cans!)
I also really like the Shure DJS750 (I use them as a DJ myself, prob wouldn't produce with them though):
          http://headphones.com.au/psingle?productID=474
If you are looking for more neutral cans (for producing, but I have a mate that uses them for mixing too) than the above, check out the Shure 840s/940s:
          http://headphones.com.au/psingle?productID=446
          http://headphones.com.au/psingle?productID=551

The Audio Technica A700/900 are also great closed phones.

On the open side, although not completely flat, the DT-880 would suit better especially producing electronic music:
          http://headphones.com.au/psingle?productID=25
Another great phones (albeit not as strong bass) are the Audio Technica AD900:
          http://headphones.com.au/psingle?productID=180
If you really want to splash:
          http://headphones.com.au/psingle?productID=236

Obviously you cannot mix with open headphones as they don't isolate.

So the options are endless… Best thing to do would be to give Headphonic a visit if you are in Perth and try them for yourself.

        • I have m50s and I hate them. They sound so 'canned' & flat & lifeless. Not bad for vocal monitoring but I tend to stick away from them when producing.

I understand you cant mix on open cans - in hindsight I probably wont be mixing. I want something somewhat truthful but still nice to spend hours producing on without getting fatigue, then mix & fix everything up in my monitors another time.

Would love some open cans. HD650s or some kind of Beyerdynamics are on the list. Probably leaning towards the HD650s as I like my HD-25s that I have for DJing.

I see you've put together quite a nice little list there. To be honest it's all a little overwhelming the amount of options, I think I might just get a loan and get some HD800s ;)

Thanks for the suggestions though, seriously good reply! Youve given me some food for thought for sure.

        • No worries. Be sure to check out the DT-880s.

What sort of music do you produce?

        • Woops forgot to mention, yes, electronic! haha

          DT-880s look great.

When powering a 600 ohm pair of these cans… can I use my Audio Interface or do i still need a HP Amp? Currently running Yamaha MR816x for Interface.

        • -1

I have owned the dt 770 for ten years so can tell you the quality of beyers and the curly cord is top notch. the screw holding the ear piece once fell out but no biggie.
yes excellent for hearing the true frequencies present in any recording, but will improve even low bit rate mp3.
not sure why anyone would want open cans as closed has so many more advantages when you just want to hear the MUSIC.
look you dont need a headphone amp, for any source. I have used PC's, laptops, m-boxes, ipods, cassette walkmans and never had a problem with not enough volume or distortion.
the only real problem with them is listening fatigue, in respect that they are so tight on the head that after an hour you have to give your ears a stretch (literally) as the squashing pain kills!
best $300 Ive on an audio product, as everything else I have sold over the years, but still have those cans!

        • @CeeAyeEee
Sorry mate, don't mean to bash but you obviously don't know what you are talking about!
No need for amp? on a 600ohm headphones?! you must be kidding me.
Nobody said the cans won't work, but they would be (very) far from their potential. If you think that high impendence phones don't need amp you are just deluding yourself. If you don't have an amp (which is fair enough), just go for the 32/80 ohm models.

not sure why anyone would want open cans as closed has so many more advantages when you just want to hear the MUSIC.

WHATEVER, come back when you get a clue ;-)

          @blaze
Not sure about your specific interface, you will have to check what sort of amplification they offer. From my experience most professional gear will come with at least a decent headphone amp so you should be ok, but do your research. (edit: I would still only go for 250ohm version tops if no amp)
For electronic music, def check out the 880s, but do yourself a favor, don't buy without hearing them first. Headphones.com.au also give you 20 days to change your mind (you can send the cans back and get other ones or store credit) which is awesome if you are not in Perth and cannot come in to check them up.
One last note, for studio work, if you use mics of any kind, you obviously don't want open headphones as the sound from them would leak into your recordings.

          Good luck!

        • Why the negative vote on my post? At least explain why you disagree…!

  • Wasn't this model at this same price for weeks?

    • +1

the question should be if the price is better than we can find in au? if the answer is yes, why dont you post it here? not everyone will check out every item on amazon.

      • But if you start posting them, you might as well post the entire amazon site. There is always slickdeals or fatwallet if you want to keep track of good us based deals.

  • I have broke the plug of the Sony MDR-F1 but will eventually fixed this when I have got the time. Sadly I was living with the Sennheiser 590 for the past few days and finally this Beyer Dynamic DT 990 Premium 600 OHM Headphones had arrived. I am smiling again and doing the burning in for the past few hours. I love this headphone and so far it is putting my Sennheiser and Sony to shame. The dynamic and energy of this headphone is pretty phenomenal and I am able to hear my collection in different light.
