Don't feel bad - this is called credit card churning and is a common practice.

    • +42

      Dear Agony Tightwad Aunties,

Please help me, because I feel bad about entering into a willing contract with a willing counter-party. The counter-party has vast data about risk and profit, some of the best minds in the country to run the numbers, makes obscene profits, has some explicit and implicit government backing & moats & guarantees (unlike almost every other for-profit enterprise in the country), is part of a government-regulated oligopoly, requires lots of very private details about me & my finances, will run an explicit verification and scoring process on me to confirm my suitability for this contract, a process which has downsides for me, makes money out of every transaction flowing from this contract, and will apply punitive fees & charges if I don't comply promptly with my side of the contract … but still, for some inexplicable reason I feel bad for them - I guess, I worry that as a bank that they can't do numbers? So please, help me resolve this terrible anguish: what should a good bargain hunter do?

Yours in deep and agonizing internal torment,
      Leftspeaker2000

i signed up to a bank account - and they called me to ask me if i was using it - i said no - so they canceled my account - and she implied i just signed up for the $25 cash bonus - prob the manager in charge of that promotion

    • +4

should not even feel close to feeling bad…
These banks prey on stupid people who can't manage finances and rely on them missing payments and paying ridiculous interest fees.
If you know how to manage your money and pay on time then you should definitely take advantage of the people who wouldn't hesitate to take everything they can from.

      • I agree with the sentiment but not with the wording. Sure, some of them might be "mentally deficient", but they could also be impoverished/time poor/unable to understand English/financially illiterate. And therefore prime targets for the corporate vultures.

      • On the contrary, not only you shouldn't feel bad, I think you should feel good for being able to take advantage of the offer. Get some points out from it for a little win from these finance giants, you got to sacrifice a credit check enquiry though.

    • You could have a stand up show at Adelaide fringe as a side hustle also

    • Haha, I nearly cried laughing. Feeling bad for the big bad banks.

Mate, do let me know what colour the sky is in your world. :-)

  • Looks like there is a fee per additional cardholder to be aware of if you do that.

  • Does this have an interest free period?

    • "up to 55 days"

      • What purchase can I make on this credit card without paying the 1.5%+ credit card surchage?

        • Whether or not you pay a credit card surcharge when you purchase something… is set by the seller of the item.
If you are asking me to go find you a random product online that won't charge you a credit card charge when you make a purchase… …. maybe try Amazon?
… *If you are talking about a "Balance Transfer Fee", that is a totally different kettle of fish.

  • is there a rule where you must be with the same employer for a minimum of 3 months before applying?

    • If you're casual, most likely.

    • The "rule" they told me was 3 months FT / 6 months casual, but approved with less so I'd say it's flexible..

It might depend more on whether you've had continuous employment

      • May I just check you’re saying you got approved as a FT working less than 3 months? How long were you employed for and was it for this card or the frequent flyer one? Thanks!

        • +1

Casual/contractor for ~2 months, for this exact card under a previous deal. I was FT immediately previously.

They wanted current payslips, bank statements, employment contract, and previous employer payslips (each requested separately over a few weeks obviously)

  • damm I am cancelled my card 6mths ago. 6 more months till ANZ again.

  • Do pay council fee and gov water charge count towards eligible spend?

    • Bpay does not count.

      • Use Sniip to bypass this and still pay your bpay bills?

        • +1

use auspost website and pay via Paypal.
please note it will show paypal only for selective billers

    • Not sure. Hope someone as a expert can clarify this for us.

  • Just a question about signing up through pointhacks.

Do I need to have an account with pointhacks or can I just simply click on the Find out more and apply button?

    • +1

Just click the find out more button
Pointhacks just get a commission from it. No account needed

    • No account required. Just use the link from their website and you're good to go.

Cancelled the anz rewards travel adventures Ltd than 12 months ago, will that card exclude me?

    • +1

      Yep

    • Their wording isn't great. I'm unsure but keen to know for certain from ANZ.

      • Please report back what you hear.

      • Yeah I'm not convinced. I thought Travel Rewards is it's own separate program, different to Rewards.

    • +4

There's two ANZ card branches - rewards and frequent flyer.

This card and the ANZ Travel Rewards card are on the rewards branch - so yes you are excluded and won't get the gift card.

If you had ANZ FF Black/Platinum for example you could get this card and be eligible for the gift card.

  • When is the gift card expired?

    • -2

      When you use it…

      • +4

well, he is technically correct lol

    • +1

It should be standard 3 years, not a hard requirement from ACCC as it's part of a loyalty program, but I would expect 3 year expiry from these businesses.

  • +1

Thanks OP, I've applied so fingers crossed :)

  • Awesome timing just about to cancel my Amex haha

How can one apply for the Balance Transfer and get the 500 gift card after spending 1500 in 3 months at the same time. In my understanding after using the BT offer any spend on the card is charged at the Advance interest rate. Can the BT offer be applied later after spending 1500 and getting the gift card.

    • I'm wondering this too - a lot require you to do the BT asap, but I think.. apply, get approved, card gets sent out. Buy $1500 worth of gift cards immediately for example - then apply for the BT (if this is allowed). Then if you make sure to pay back the $1500 within 55 days you shouldn't get charged any interest on it, then the BT just stays and you don't get charged interest for it (just make minimum payments)

Would love for someone who can confirm this though!

      • +1

do you have to do a balance transfer to apply?

  • Dumb question about gift card - can I use it for a few transactions within a few days (at the same retailer as per T&C of course) ?

    • single use. someone commented earlier

      • +1

My understanding of their T&C -

"Worth noting that the gift card can only be redeemed at a single retailer. It has to be a single $500 gift card and is not possible to split into 2x $250 gift cards across 2 shops."

was that you will get a $500 card for one of the listed retailer - to be used up over multiple transactions but only for that one retailer??

      • +3

"single use" in that you can only pick one person to get the GC from (e.g. $500 Amazon GC, or $500 woolies GC - that's how it was when I got my GC a month ago, this same card/deal but from finder not pointhacks). But then using the GC is per that retailer, e.g. amazon and woolies both let you spend your GC over multiple transactions.

        • Also jb allows you to use it multiple times

  • Do you think ANZ will reject me again as they didn't approve my QFF card? Salary sacrifice seems the devil with ANZ

    • +4

      Yes.

  • Ensure if applying for an offer, you don’t currently hold and haven’t opened or closed an ANZ Rewards Black, ANZ Rewards Platinum or an ANZ Rewards credit card in the last 12 months

My last ANZ card was around a year ago. how do you check?

All i can find is an email saying my ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum card is on the way but its probably from activation date right?

    • try doing a credit check? like credit savvy it tells u when ur account is closed.

      • wont that be another query on my file?

        • no, signup to credit savvy. they show card open and close date correctly for last 5 years.

  • +1

I can confirm that this is legit as I applied 3 months ago and received my $500 card today.

    • +1

Can you remember how long it took to be approved for the card?

  • Nice, I only have ANZ Qantas so can apply, just hoping the ending date is not too soon as I'm still chugging.

  • Where can I find what constitutes "eligible purchases"?

  • ah damm just joined that ANZ card recently to get the qantas points … wish i did this one, $500 better value as can use it now than using it to buy an airline ticket lol

  • Apart from the $500 GC
How is ANZ rewards program compare to the Qantas points card in daily spending?

  • +5

This is by far the best value credit card out there. $0 annual fee, only $1500 spend for 3 months whereas other providers are 3k or even 6k. Then $500 gift card, WOW, going to sign up tonight.

    • Most people just sell their 100k bonus points for 1k, so this may be a simple card but I'm not sure it's the best value card around.

      • -1

1K minus annual fee and 3k spend to meet the criteria

And I don't think many people will buy qantas points now anyway

  • Can you take this card out, wait for the reward and close it down to avoid the fee next year or do you need to keep it longer?

    • +1

Yes. can close once you get the reward. Mine came 2-3 weeks after meeting min spend.

  • Two recent pay slips for income verification.
    If you’re self-employed, you’ll need your accountant’s phone number.
Details of your living expenses, such as regular bills.

I provided all these details to them when I wanted ANZ Assured ($500 daily overdraft facility) against my ANZ debit card.
The (profanity) took forever to get back to me, only to decline my application without any reason.

Not sure if I will have better luck with this application.

  • +1

I just signed up. Now I wonder if it would be an eligible spend to buy discounted gift cards through suncorp benefits for example?

  • +2

So just sign up, any buy $1500 gift cards, then wait for the $500 gift card, and then cancel ?

    • -2

why not keep it free first year anyway?

      • +6

cancel asap that way you can re-apply 12 months after that date.

        • +1

          ahhhh smart!!!

        • Only if this is an ongoing deal?

          • +1

@DoctorCalculon: card providers keep coming out with various deals.
good to be able to take advantage of as many as you can.

    • +1

      Hi ozvictor,

Do gift cards count as cash-equivalent transactions?

"A minimum spend of $1,500 within the first 3 months of approval is required to receive the gift card. Eligible purchases cover most transactions, with the normal exclusions of fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, balance transfers and transactions for gambling or gaming."

  • How good is their international travel insurance? Does it only cover the card holder and not a family travelling together?

    • Can only comment on the first part. I was stuck in Fiji in 2019 and they paid out my claim - had to book one way flight home and additional accommodation and meals. Pretty straightforward.

  • daaaaaamn… too bad i just closed the last Platinum deal card last month…

  • Cheers OP. Signed up. Waiting confirmation.

  • Applied last Dec from different link. Started to use in Jan. Got a $500 gift card in Feb. Great deal. Now plan to cancel it after I receive my HSBC credit card.

    • +1

so you just spend $1500 and it auto triggers to send you a gift card?

      • +1

Yes. After spent 1500, probably within a week I received email.

    • Did u use your card to pay bills such as water, council or strata?

  • +3

I applied last year to one of these ANZ promotions and got knocked back. Had more than adequate backing, an excellent credit rating but after applying my credit score was knocked down a few points. Not sure how ANZ assess the applications but my application was for the minimum credit limit and didn't dream it would be rejected. Really annoyed that the application dropped my credit score.

    • +1

Yep this just happened to me. Sent through my payslips, savings accounts proof of balance, etc which more than covers the (minimum) limit I applied chose. Not sure why I got knocked back, maybe they think i'll be 'over leveraged' (if that is even the right term).

  • I wonder if I fill these apps in wrong but I always get rejected - 3 dependants really bite you in the ass…

    • I wonder how would they know if you entered zero…

  • Can anyone please let me know what are the chances of ANZ knocking back my application with a credit score of 655 (Good) on Credit Savvy? I've an active credit card with Kogan and a recently approved mortgage.

    • How long is a piece of string… It depends on a lot more factors than that as well. Income, job security, risk factors, etc.

    • It all depends. I applied for a CC a few years ago with the credit savvy score of 800 at the time and rejected my application

      • Sitrep: APPROVED!

  • May I ask if making bpay transfer for rent count as eligible transaction to receive the gift card
