Lastpass Restricting Free Users to 1 Device Type

Just opened up the Lastpass app and got this notification: Starting March 16, 2021, LastPass Free will only include access on unlimited devices of one type.
Basically you will be able to use it on mobile OR pc, but not both. Multiple mobiles or multiple pcs is fine, but not cross platform.

Lastpass has been a good free password manager for years now, but this seems like it kills the free version for personal use. And it's hard to ignore that there are plenty of alternatives these days.
What do you all think are some good alternatives that people should be looking at, free or paid?
And what do other Lastpass users think of this? Would you start paying, or keep using it on just your phone/pc? Or switch to something else?

Personally, I think I'll get around to trying an old unused 1Password deal, or maybe go straight for the ever popular Bitwarden. I've paid for Lastpass in the past, and I don't mind paying again given the use I've got from it, but seems like there's not much to lose by trying something else for a while.

        • Microsoft does push approval notifications for Microsoft products. But other than that no benefit and some cons as per @tomclancy post.

      • duh… ok thanks

  • question guys.
do you have two entries for the same login, one for the website and one for the mobile app ? for example i have entry for flybuys web, and flybuys app
Maybe somehow 1 entry didnt work for both web and app with lastpass ?

    • No, I only had one entry come across for Flybuys. It was web-based I'm assuming

      • sorry i didnt mean when importing, bitwarden created them.
i created them long time ago (when with lastpass). - if i remember, i have entry for flybuys when accessing via website, but then when using flybuys app lastpass asking again if i want to add so i make another one with different name ie flybus app

        • oh I see. I haven't used the flybuys app in ages. Could have something to do with it

          • @tomclancy: not just flybuys but basically now i have many entries xxx web, xxx app
            will test with bitwarden later

            • @CyberMurning: Just keep one (website). When accessing the second one (Android app), you choose the existing and Bitwarden/1Password will memorise that for the future.

  • Free 6 Months of LastPass Premium (Req EDU Email) - OzBargain

Is anyone using this? Defer the decision so hopefully, LogMeIn change their minds?

Unfortunately I don't have access to an .edu account. What's the easiest way to get one? I read there were some free courses to get one in Tasmania?

    • Converting to bitwarden will be faster and easier than seeing up a .edu email address. It takes 5 mins. Just do it. LogMeIn is only getting worse, not better

  • Why didn't anyone mention that sharing aka "transferring ownership" in BW is a pain in the a$$?

  • I have started using Bitwarden with a private server running on my NAS. Everything is great, it even got more features than Lastpass free tire. I feel much safer having all my data stored on my local hard driver and an encrypted backup somewhere else.

  • ok anyone here pay for premium bitwarden?
what is that feature TOTP that you get? useful ? does it means i dont have to use the separate authenticator app anymore? (ex. authy)

    • +1

Just going back through this thread and noticing you've posted lots of questions (good in you for asking!). I have just started paying for the premium bitwarden. TOTP is Time-based One Time Password, so it means you can use it as an authenticator like LastPass authenticator or Authy (but only if you pay for the premium version). It will even copy the code ready for you once you log in to the site. I personally still use a separate app though (now using Aegis), because I figure the point of multi factor authentication is not having everything in the same place.

The main reason I did was so that I could set up emergency access. My wife is not as tech savvy as me (though to her credit she took to LastPass and then bitwarden really well). I figure if anything happens to me, she's not going to want to have to worry about getting access to my vault.

  • What's everyone's update if you've moved to a new program or service?

    • You can see from above that I moved to Bitwarden for passwords and Authy for 2FA. For me I can barely notice a difference in these compared to the LastPass alternatives. Almost exactly the same functionality and feel across both.

Only one difference I notice is Bitwarden by default 'locks' whenever you close Chrome so everyday in the morning when I start my computer and open a Chrome session I have to 'unlock' Bitwarden with a PIN code. Takes all of 5 seconds and more secure so I'm OK with that.

same here, moved to Bitwarden for passwords and Authy for 2FA

my feedback, bitwa doesnt offer to setup new login as good as lastpass, something like not consistent sometimes offering sometimes not.

        • Yes I noticed this straight away. Maybe 1password would be better.

  • Just moved over from Lastpass. Today is the D Day - 16th March 2021. The moment it strikes 00:00 in US, the first login to the device will be registered.

Using Bitwarden for an hour now. The UX is not as great as Lastpass but it still does the job fairly decently.

And the movement from Lastpass to Bitwarden just took like 5 mins.
Export csv to local machine and then import to Last pass. That easy!

  • Thanks guys, moved to bitwarden. Works well with Google Chrome Windows and Chrome Android.

  • Just switched to Bitwarden in under 15 minutes including 2FA and export/import. Seems like a no brainer.

  • Found a random reddit thread about transferring/storing accounts/passwords last night which lead me from LastPass current paid plans to Bitwarden and decided to check here. Looks like it was a good move. Just transferred family accounts over. LastPass UI was always a problem for me. I like the simplified look.

  • Any updates folks?

I moved to edu account of LastPass for six months. Ends in August or September so we'll see it goes.

    I have looked at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/Bitwarden?s=t

    • I switched to bitwarden. Pretty simple to make the move, takes about 15mins and everything works well.

Seems to be the popular move

      • Same here, should've moved ages ago, it's much better than Lastpass.

        • its good, very good but sometimes i notice bitw doesnt offer me to save the user/pass on the new website i signing in.

          • @CyberMurning: Same here. I think it might be because the extension is locked after a while? Not sure though

            • @crentist: glad not just me.
hmm so we should login first before entering new website for the bitw to recognise and offer to save.////
i dont remember that happening with lastpass but i may be wrong

              • @CyberMurning: I've had this issue, and I'm fairly sure it's not because the vault is locked at the time. I think sometimes it just doesn't recognise the login. I had this happen very occasionally with LP too.

I expect it will get better over time though, bearing in mind that LP has an extra 8 years of development on BW, and probably (?) more developers working on it as it is a paid product (compared to bitwarden being open source first, with a paid premium version).

I have just always made sure I've copied the generated password (Ctrl+Shift+G in Chrome generates a password and puts it on your clipboard) and if it doesn't automatically pick up, just create manually and paste in. It's about 20 seconds of occasional inconvenience.

                • +1

@moar bargains: Thanks didnt know about ctrl shift g
I always get bitw to generate passwords

                • @moar bargains: that Ctrl+Shift+G doesnt work. Ctrl+Shift+L yes but i dont use chrome to manage pass. anymore

                  • @CyberMurning: Ah I might have set that manually, can't remember exactly. Check the extension settings (Right click it and then scroll to the bottom of the settings page).

And yes, you don't want to use the chrome password manager anymore. Google how to disable it.

          • @CyberMurning: I couldn't find the perfect password manager. Last pass, 1password, even Kaspersky… Now I use Bitwarden… All of them have occasional problems with saving password, or opening the password box. I had a lot of issues with both Lastpass and 1password saving passwords as ******** on Android. Then when I needed the password was not there and I had to reset and save manually.

I'm quite happy with Bitwarden; not perfect though…

  • Ok my free six month's of LastPass expired recently.
