Free 6 Months of LastPass Premium (Req EDU Email)

610

Found this while doing some Googling. I've used LastPass for a while now and wanted to try out Premium. It requires a .Edu email address, though.

If you don't have an edu email, you can still sign up and try out LastPass Premium for a month if you use my [referral link].
Both referrer and referee get one month free premium

So I guess if LastPass gets hacked you're really stuffed.

    • +4

All decryption is local. The only thing stored on the LastPass servers is an AES 256-bit encrypted blob.

      • +2

How secure is an encrypted blob? Blobs get compromised all the time, don't they?

        • +1

          AES-256 encryption is very secure .. See : http://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/1kjarl/wikileaks_…

Last time lastpass get compromised was 3 years ago.

Or that what they want you to know

Alot of things happen behind the scenes that we are never told about. If you work in large scale companies and government agencies, you know what im talking about.

        • +1

The plaintext in the blob is as strong as the underlying cryptography (AES 256-bit) and your password.

The advantage is that even if the blob is publicly available, you cannot decrypt it without the password. The disadvantage is that if you lose the password, it's gone. Nobody including LastPass can help you.

If you're using LastPass, please use a strong password and turn on 2-factor authentication (2FA). 2FA ensures that even if your password is compromised (maybe you typed it in at an internet cafe), you'll still need a number generated from your phone.

I've been a satisfied LastPass (freeware) user for about 3 years. I recently purchased LastPass Premium to use the iPhone app and believe the yearly fee ($12 per year) is worth it given the amount of time it has saved me.

  • has anyone tried if edu.au works?

    • Worked for my RMIT.edu.au email address.
Also let me add the 6 months to my account under a different email address which is already premium.

      Thanks OP!

      • +2

Does that mean I can sign up using my .edu email and later change it to a non-.edu email account?

Edit: To answer my own question, yes. Create a new account using your personal email address, then use your .edu account for the promo. You will receive an email with a link to redeem the offer, and it asks you if you have an existing LastPass account. Enter your personal email address associated with your 'existing' account and boom. Thanks OP!

      • How did you do that? I've got an existing account but also have access to a .edu.au account (legitimately)

        • You put in your .edu email, they send an email to that address with a link to a webpage.

On that webpage, you specify the email address you wish to add the 6 months premium to. I just entered my existing account's email address on this page and it worked.

    • UNSW works fine too.

I think Scotty should set up an .edu

i have learnt how to get great bargains ;)

OzBargain has been pretty education educational for me!

Clearly still need some help though..

  • I've been looking at getting a Password Manager for a while. Anyone know if I can sign up using an .edu email account and transfer it to a different email? I won't be using my uni email for much longer.

Edit: It worked fine. I created a new account with my gmail, then used my .edu email for the promo offer and it asked for my existing LastPass account email. Cheers!

i use lastpass religiously. its that good

  • Can anyone present their arguments about why lastpass is safe? I'm interested but have an underlying distrust of things like this

    • +3

So what do you currently do? I have 579 passwords saved with Last Pass, most of them generated by Last Pass. I probably remember about 10 passwords that I created that I know I have to enter myself frequently. The rest I have no idea about, some garbled crap that means nothing to me.

  • +3

I already use an excel document for this. How is this any different?

    • +3

None, none whatsoever. Please continue using excel.

Btw, what's your login email account?

    • +2

Use X-Marks to sync your bookmarks across all browsers (except Opera, damn you Opera). Use Last Pass to auto fill in your details on 99% of sites, this includes common form details. Secure notes as well, I store my App keys for all software I own in the Secure Note section. You can then access all this info via a browser plug in, their website, mobile apps etc..

    • +1

Can you send me the excel file so I can compare and tell you the difference.:)

    • I use my brain to remember my passwords. how is this any different?

      • +2

Using lastpass you can have a different password for each of the sites you use, using special characters and no dictionary words.. e.g. #fj5@le-91cqk! … you can use much more complex passwords than you may be able to remember… I wouldn't be able to remember passwords like that for all my sites.

The lastpass app also has a password generator, so you can easily generate strong passwords.

    • Integration into your web browser so no need to copy+paste

  • +5

Lastpass is probably the single biggest time saving application/service I use. It will change your life

    • +1

      I didn't notice any life changes :-(

      • +3

If your life sucks to begin with there will be no improvement. But if your life is awesome, Lastpass will make it more awesomer.

        • He should be happy that it didn't get suckier.

  • +2

I've used LP for a few years + everything connected to money has second factor authentification.

I wish all sites would allow long passwords and special characters. It can't be that hard can it?

  • Not saying that it shouldn't be posted for people who didn't know, but this has been like this forever.
    LastPass rocks BTW <3

  • Any way to use that referral code if I already have a free account? I.e I'm not creating an account …

  • I have used premium version for a while now, so I could also access vault and features on my Nexus 5. Works well and comes highly recommended for security and time saving….SOOOOooo many god-damn passwords to remember these days… :s

  • My "LastPass" is a 50 cent notepad with an index of every username and password I have; locked in a safe.

Pretty hard to hack into 4.5 centimetres of steel.

    • +1

      Security: Maximum.
      Convenience: Minimum.

What happens when you're on the other side of the world and need a password?

      • I make a photocopy; hide it on my person and away I go. Shred it when it's no longer needed. Also, it helps having a fairly good memory and imaginative passwords.

I even keep copies in a secure locker at work and a trusted relative's house.

Call me excessive, borderline Jason-Bourne complex; but there is no such thing as cyber-security and no corporation cares about data integrity/information security/customer privacy, regardless of how much lip service they pay to such lofty principles.

        • +2

You think you can trust your relatives with your $? Ever seen ACA?

        • +1

Lol. Well fair point, families can be cut-throat these days, but when it's my relatives versus a faceless, for-profit corporation who has no duty of care for my digital identity, if you will, I'll go with somebody I know personally.

And if they ever did decide to dip into my savings account; that'd become imminently clear to me.

  • The email i received from LP in my edu account only has a number "#Redeem your premium .x..x.x.x.."
no link in the email. actually, there's nothing in the email body.

anyone can share what link to use to redeem this?

    cheers

  • Free 6 Months of LastPass Premium…

Ok… What's LastPass? Some/any included info would be good.

  • Roboform is better and, unlike Lastpass, has never been hacked.

    • Why would it be hacked when the master passwords are stored on the individuals computer? So you have the bigger target of Last Pass, but their ability to understand, and yes fail, in creating excellent protection from attacks, versus the average user that may very well believe Microsoft is calling them to help them with a security problem they discovered on their computer.
Either way, people need to use something instead of the nothing that most do.

    • Why is Roboform better?

  • +1

I got this to work with an @alumni.adelaide.edu.au address!

You can only apply one voucher per account though. I have one going spare, if anyone wants it.

    • Yes please if still available…thank you very much.:)

      • Still available. PM me your lastpass username

        • PM'd you, hope u can help us out

  • Quick question i got emailed a code but i have no idea there to put it?? any suggestions

  • This still works.

Unfortunately I don't have access to an .edu account. What's the easiest way to get one? I read there were some free courses to get one in Tasmania?

  • Received e-mail on changes to Last Pass which is disappointing- which is only able to login on one device so am going to jump on premium. What alternatives are available once the 6 months expire?

Also checking that referrals no longer exist?

    • +1

Search ozbargain. Bitwarden seems to be a favourite and only takes 5 minutes to transfer data across.
