These are no better/worse than a $10 fan heater at Kmart.

It'll chew power - 1000w of energy gives 1000w of heat.

If you can, install a split system reverse cycle - up to 5-6 times less power use.

In complete agreement. These really do need to be a bit of a last resort, and only for people planning to use it very little. Very little heating given the power usage. In a few years this will completely chew up the difference in upfront cost between it and a split if there's any intention to get any decent use out of it.

I'm surprised the government doesn't just slap a 1 star energy rating on all of these.

You will be lucky to get 2.5 times.
This value depends of many parameters (including outside air temperature, inside air temperature, humidity, air flow, how many stops/starts per hr, how old/new is your unit, etc.).

I know some of them claim x 6…

      • +1

Agreed, you'd be looking at around 2.5. Colder it is the harder they'll work but still more efficient. There's nothing wrong with space heaters if used properly. That is to heat a smallish space and not constantly.

        • Agree.

      • ^ If your reverse cycle is constantly icing up and having to run defrost cycles your efficiency is not going to be 3:1 these heaters still have use when the temperature is single digits and below.

        • Cheap brands of AC might do this, but buy a decent brand like Fujitsu, Mitsubishi etc and you won't have this issue.

I've had mine running at 4 degrees outside and doesn't ice up or need to defrost. Only had it do that when it's near zero outside. That is rare where I live.

I've had my split running since 2009 - runs most nights in winter at 22 degrees. When I started using it, I stopped using my wall furnace (gas). My bills went down a lot since gas in Vic is expensive.

Especially now with solar it's a perfect combination.

i have serious doubts about 5/6 times less energy.
nothing will heat with 1/5th of 1000 watts, well, maybe a blanket

    • That's the thing. A hypothetical equivilent split would be using 200w and producing 1000w of heating. Of course, you can't actually get a split that small so it would be cycling in reality.

      • The newer inverter ones can ramp down and just purr along, they don't cycle on and off as such.

    • +2

You need to learn how split systems work - they move heat, they don't create heat like a resistive element heater (ie fan heater, oil heater, this one).

The winter is around the corner.

OP, are you associated? Winter is not around the corner! Own up?

  • Just get a generic kmart heater and plug it into a smart plug. Tada wifi enabled.

Used it for my 15$ fan heater to automate on/off schedules at night
