Isn't it better and healthier to use charcoal ?

    • I don't think there is any health benefit from charcoal over briquettes. The easy light heat beads have some chemical in them but these are just charcoal and sand from what I can tell.

I use both. I think charcoal tastes better for high heat grilling but if you just need long lasting consistent heat for 12+ hrs these will do the job.

These are wood charcoal, pulverised and made into a uniform shape. That's it.

Many briquettes include corn starch as a binder - also flavourless and harmless.

The quick light ones contain accelerants - prob not great for low and slow snake / Minion method but I also can't recall the last time I saw these quick light beads in a store. Prob moot if you're going to use a firelighter anyway.

FWIW, I've never had anybody ask whether I used charcoal or briquettes or if so, what brand, no matter what I cooked - fast chooks, medium-slow ribs, an all night brisket. They all turn out the same. There's more variation between the same product on different days than between different products; environmental factors like wind and food volume play a bigger part in burn time and heat regulation. I just buy what's on special.

  • Just got a weber go anywhere. What's a good charcoal to use?

i like this one from bunnings below, produces much less ash than briquettes but the con is sizing isnt as consistent as briquettes so you may get odd sizes that dont fit too well together in the weber go anywhere - but i have this model as well and grills fine.

Yep I use lump for shorter cooks and briquettes for low and slow snake method in the full size kettle.

I have the same lump charcoal, so I smashy smash the bigger chunks with a hammer then put them in a different container

These Redheads are okay. Compared to the Heat Beads brand (my "go to" option), they:

      • Are larger in size
      • Are about the same price when on sale
      • Seem to burn longer
      • Don't burn quite as hot
      • Don't smoke food that well i.e. not enough smokey flavour

If I'm treating myself, I would buy myself a bag of Heat Beads Hardwood Lump Charcoal from Bunnings. It's a 20kg bag and is double the price of the "beads" but it's pretty good value as the results are amazing!

If I had access to free hardwood and lived on a rural property, I would probably make my own charcoal as the process is pretty straight-forward.

      • Don't smoke food that well i.e. not enough smokey flavour

Do they at least not impart any crap flavour?
These days as a placebo (most likely lol) do a mix of Coconut shell briquettes and a few pieces of lump (Jumbuck atm) for flavour.

        • +1

I can't say that it imparts any crap flavour but it's definitely not as smokey or intense as the Heatbeads. If you've never used anything else, you probably wouldn't be able to tell.

          • @OSienna: Thanks for the feedback!
hmm I'll try a bag if I see them then just to fill the potential gap till a more appealing special.

  • they're no Heat Beads..

    • +1

      Correct

  • These are terrible. Do not buy, even at 50% off.

    • In what way?

      • +1

It burns fast, gives dirty smoke and just turns to ash. I bought two bags because they were cheap and immediately regretted it.

I stick to Heat Beads lump and split logs. Burns longer much cleaner smoke.
