    is 4gb enough ?

    • Depends what you are doing. I am looking at using it for home automation and in that case 2GB is enough.

Depends on size of your home…

      is 4gb enough ?

That's like asking if size 10 shoes are bigger enough without telling us how big your foot is.

      • What about running K8s services in lab env? Just planning to explore containers :) PS - I'm new to Pi and Containers LOL

        • Once again depends on your container size.
FYI check what architectures your containers support - i briefly had a pi with docker, but i got rid of it after running into 'this container doesnt support arm processors' too many times.

          • @nothommus: Thanks !! Pretty small tbh, I won’t host any workload though.. just to play around with setup and commands

    • is 4gb enough ?

      yep.

  • How’s overall experience with heat sink and other peripherals? Good quality or should one opt to buy them separately

    • according to comments, fan is very loud

      • I have this kit, and yes the fan is loud, but not that bad, but it cool the CPU 10C more than the low noise fan.

    • I got this about 6 months ago to run a pihole setup
The case is good, but the fan can be a little loud if you have it near you.
Ive currently got it running in passive mode (fan unplugged) and it run ~55C to 60C on a hot day.

Its a good value kit as it has everything you need.

      • I gather the fan is designed for 5v, and I’ve read that you can run it off the 3.3v pin, which reduces noise significantly.

The Pi 4 is such an overkill for just pihole. Hope you're running more on that thing.

        • yeah, I have pi hole running on a Zero W

        • I got it to dabble in Pi stuff. Pihole is just its current use. Eventually it will be used with Home Assistant
I had the fan in the low power mode, and its still pretty loud

      • So, its okay to unplug the fan? I'm new to this, so not sure if it would impact the performance.

        • only need fan/heatsinks if your running it near the limit and need max performance

I just had a look at the Labists website - you can buy it off them direct for about $A130 delivered.

So the usual Amazon price is not that great and this is only a small discount - but I am not sure of the delivery time.

  • I’ve been keen to get a HomeBridge/HOOBS setup going at home to pull together my HomeKit and non-HomeKit devices. And maybe run Pi Hole as well (if possible).

Would a Pi 4 be overkill?

We don’t have an non-HomeKit cameras at the moment, and when we get cameras, they’ll likely be HoneKit compatible.

While I know the fan is supposed to be loud on this kit, I’d pick up a passive cooling case for it.

Or should I just get a Pi Zero or Pi 3 for cheaper?

stick to the pi 4 for anything HA/HomeBridge related
