Does nothing for Melbourne water according to my TDS tests

These aren't made to lower TDS, you need RO/distillation/ion exchange for that. (Costs a lot more)

Besides, TDS is merely an indication of low quality water, it doesn't necessarily mean the water is bad. Theres plenty of compounds that make up the TDS that are actually good for you.

These are good for removing things like chlorine from the water due to the active carbon, which is good if you wanna use this to make a cold brew or something, as it helps remove tap water oxidising agents.

      • Yes I know TDS is just an indicator, a TDS of 100 could be worse than a TDS of 10, it just depends on what those solids are (eg arsenic).

There is however a filter jug in the US that gets TDS down to zero, forgot it's name but has zero in the title. The Brita ones do remove some solids also, I've tested them in much harder water, where TDS was over 400.

Melbourne water has a tiny amount of residual chlorine, I doubt these filters would do anything.

I do make cold brew though, so this is good to know. I'll have to test it out for myself to be sure.

ETA chlorine is 1 part per million so basically negligible

Brita will not remove TDS, but it will decrease turbidity & suspended solids.

Brita does contain activated carbon, which is known to reduce chlorine. That's one of the reasons why these are popular, as it gets rid of the "tap taste" which includes chlorine. :-)

          Edit

Actually this brita filter contains MAXTRA+ which has ion-exchange pearls. Not sure how this compares to a resin, but it should have a small effect on your TDS if that's the case!

Also I would definitely be suspicious of a jug getting TDS down to 0, sounds like marketing fluff. But I'm prepared to be surprised :D

            • @TEER3X: That's pretty neat, maybe a cheap alternative to RO for some special use cases.

But I should stress to anyone thinking of lowering TDS drastically; zero TDS is not ideal and nobody should replace their drinking water with it. You'd be missing out on important minerals and there are studies linking it to CVD, neurodegeneration etc. I would take those studies with a grain of salt due to scientific method, but should nonetheless be considered as you miss out on vital minerals.

Here is some literature on my reasoning too.

    Too expensive… No deal.
It's smaller than XL being sold @Good Guys and has only 1 filter instead of 3.

I have one of these from KMart which is compatible with the Maxtra filters. It has 3.3L capacity and is far better value at only $15.
