Ozito PXC 4.0Ah Battery (Black Series) $48 @ Bunnings

940

Props to a recent comment from ialam99 for this but I thought it was worthy of its own deal. 4Ah for $48… not the cheapest but not bad these days. It's the Black 'promo' type instead of the regular red-ish type, however I've run & abused both and haven't discovered any issues.

  • Suits all tools in the Ozito Power X Change range
  • Built in charge check
  • For home and garden use

This 4.0Ah battery from Ozito’s Power X Change range provides ample power to handle any task. Compatible with any tool from the Power X Change range, simply plug it in and get started on your next D.I.Y. project.

    How much is it normally?

Seeing as Bunnings now often go out of their way to use a different black 'promo' version one can only assume they use cheaper, lower grade 18650 cells in these. It's worth noting that Aldi used to promote they used genuine Samsung 18650's in their 20v batteries, not sure if thats still the case but they're top quality and folks used to buy them just to cut up the pack and 'harvest' the cells for flashlights etc.

    • +11

Yeah, I'd say these black packs would be built around slightly lower grade cells so yes it's absolutely up to the individual to decide on the perceived value… but I've been using a couple of black packs bought around this time last year along with four red packs I've had for close to 5 years and they're all excellent. Regarding the ALDI/Samsung cell situation, I completely get there's a difference on paper and sure that could translate to a difference in real-world use but I've gotta say I'm still so impressed with all my Ozito tools & batteries even after treating them like dirt over the last 4-5 years. Sure, there are some 'misses' tool-wise (older model Circular Saw was atrocious, and the cheap bladed grass trimmer for instance) but the rest of it has been excellent. Here I was prepared for it all to be unusable and fall apart after a year but no, it has exceeded all expectations and continues to do so. Fantastic.

I have both the red pack and the black pack. I opened them up and they look identical inside. Same cells, same electronics. Doubt they would use a different grade of cells or they would brand them differently.

You get a 3year replacement warranty with Ozito. So you can always do a warranty claim if you have issues.

    • +15

I think there was a post on these previously being the same internals. But i would say they are the same internals as the red ones. The reason they have these black promo ones is to not price match and have the red ones cleared out. That way they can limit how many they sell at the lower price as ones its sold out they will say sold out. That way the next week when the price goes back up to full price they still have stock of the red ones. Best of both world, price match and when out of stock say sorry, but still have full stock of the red ones to sell after the promo rather than get cleared out of the normal stock line

Seeing as Bunnings now often go out of their way to use a different black 'promo' version one can only assume they use cheaper, lower grade 18650 cells in these.

An alternative explanation is that the black promo version of batteries are given a different part number and provided in limited stock quantities (hence limiting the loss for Bunnings/Ozito). Otherwise, if it were just a promo on the same red batteries, Bunnings would sell all of their stock at the cheaper price.

The black promo batteries have the same warranty (3 years) as the red ones, so I doubt they're using cheaper cells.

On the other hand, while the weight of the two batteries is the same, the charge time is listed as 75 minutes for the black promo batteries and 80 minutes for the red ones. I suspect the discrepancy is due to the two types of battery not being tested on the same day on the same charger.

If you want to be pedantic about it Ozito batteries may last longer term because Aldi batteries only have the controller wired to the +/- of the whole cell pack (from memory of an old teardown online, happy to be corrected). So the BMS might be better in the Ozito.

Realistically I'm not worried too much. I'm doing the other measures like storing at "mostly" rather than full charge, or rotating accordingly.

The whole charge limiting thing was something I was a little concerned about too but hey, 5 years later and there's been times when I haven't worked on the house reno for 4-6 months at a time and have left the batteries in the charge rack I made for that entire time. Still going strong… I'm actually struggling to kill them :)

    • I see no reason to assume they are different.

edit: my mistake, the black ones are the cheaper - I will have to test them.

Would a couple of these handle a ozito blower ? or should I opt for the red ones instead ?

    • +1

I am using 2x 2.5ah and they are plenty. Used blower for around 5min and still had the 3 lights green on batteries.

    • +2

These should be A-OK. As above, I haven't noticed any real-world difference between the black & red types.

    • Yes. I have both red and black all work fine across Ozito range including the Jet blower.

      • Yes. I have both red and black all work fine across Ozito range including the Jet blower.

… work fine across Ozito PXC range …

Thanks, i suppose there would be the one village clown that needs to know not to try to with the corded tools. :D

          • @Xizor: There is also a cheap ozito rechargeable range which uses different batteries.

    • I got two (black) in the jet blower kit, they work well and last half an hour or so but make the blower pretty heavy. I only need around 10 minutes so waiting on a deal for a second 2ah.

  • +3

I have two sets of these black ones (from when they were $29?? why can't we have that deal back :( ), and one set of the black/red 3.0Ah that came with my mower. Both sets seem to work fine in Mower, Jet Blower, and the 2x18v whipper snipper (if my 2.0Ahs run out).

    • Yeah, snapped mine up when they were $29 too :)

    • +3

why can't we have that deal back :(

      Ask Aldi :P
But yeah sad those days seem over. Luckily got enough batteries over the years to not have to buy anymore.

At least with Aldi there's a chance you find some old stock with a clearance price. (If you have tools or adapter anyway)

    • Yeah bought 8 at 29 each back then.

  • Is this as cheap as they get?

    • +1

Nowadays yes, it seems so :(

      • Thanks. I'll pull the trigger then.

  • +1

Was this price a 2-3 weeks ago when i checked, thought it was normal price for black so didn't post it.

    • Yes, it is… but the stock is limited so it's good to post whenever you see them. Lesson for next time :)

  • Can you hack this so you can use it on Samsung cordless vacuum ? Samsung's replacement battery is $200 !

    • Not sure but I did make the mistake of thinking I could rebuild a Dyson pack, doh! I would've been fine if I'd only realised beforehand that they brick themselves when power is removed from the BMS PCB. Not sure about the Sammys though, you may want to look that up.

      • Dyson has been done before : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1S7WPGMn0w

        • Yeah but I'm talking about repacking the Dyson battery itself… not just replacing the pack.

      • I was going to try this, but couldn't open the casing without destroying it.

        • Yep, it was pretty difficult I gotta say.

      • Wow … just wow

      • Dyson really don't want people rebuilding them do they.. hard enough to open let alone anything else.
My DC31 batteries were actually not too bad, managed to open without damaging the case but the V6 was glued up so tight was no chance.
Wasn't looking to rebuild though, just pulled the cells.

  • went to castle hill but they weren't on the shelf yet and staff didn't know where they were

    • They now do click and collect for free
I just ordered mine so I don't have to look for it myself

      • yeah, I wanted to use my gift cards though, and I was also looking at some other stuff

  • Already have lots of the 4 Ah ones. I'm waiting for the higher power, higher capacity 5.2 Ah ozito packs to go one sale for my chainsaw

    • +1

5.2 is obsolete i believe, this will be the replacement https://www.einhell.de/shop/en-de/18v-4-6-ah-multi-ah-pxc-pl…

      • "Multi-Ah" 🤔?

How the hell does that work? Doesn't even make sense.

Rated lower @ higher current and higher @ lower current? Thats going to make things quite muddy.

Innovative thinking from the marketing department 👍

        • I was thinking some sort of Electronic series / parallel changeover depending on load draw of the battery.

4Ah parallel batteries for lower load requirements, 6Ah series parallel for higher load?

          I'm just speculating though.

        • Wouldn't this just be restricting the maximum charge and discharge of the battery. Li batteries deteriorate faster when run too low or charged too high. So if you bring in these limits you restrict the Ah but increase the battery life. I would like to be able to do this with my phone but does not seem to be a way. If I could set it to stop charging at 90% I would expect the battery to last a lot longer.

          • @ikey2: This is exactly what they are doing. Choose either more capacity (shorter life) or longer life (less capacity). Phones may say they charge to 100% and discharge to 0%, but they don't to preserve battery life.

            • @Hazza: Yes, but they set it such as to expect about two years working life from the phone battery. I keep my phone for as long as they work so would like about 5 years from the original battery.

              • @ikey2: Wow, only two years. I keep all my phones for at least 4 years and sometimes more. The battery has never been the reason for me to change yet. My current S7 has almost 'as new' battery life and even my previous S5 battery is still pretty good. Your right though there should be a native way in settings to set thresholds. There are apps for setting the minimum and maximum charge percentage, they usually require root though, but I have never needed them.

          • @ikey2: AccuBattery is what I use. I've set it to play an alarm when my phone charges to 85%. I'm always annoyed when I forget it and come back to find it fully charged.

        • +1

"MULTI-Ah technology: 6Ah pack for max. charge level or 4Ah pack
to protect the battery for 3x longer total lifetime"

Judging by that just doesn't discharge the battery as much for longer life.

      • Cripes! 109.95 Euros!
        WTF?
Good luck for Bunnings if they can sell them at the $A equivalent.

    • +3

I wasted $99 on one of the 5.2Ah Ozitos. I still have it but just treat it like a physically larger 4Ah. Not much chop, only the tiniest fraction better than the 4Ah so definitely not worth the huge asking price. Far better to get two of these $48 4.0Ah instead! We live and learn.

This was from a previous post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/532458 - but there is a guy in Brisbane who makes adapters for Ozito, Aldi & Ryobi batteries

    https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-seller/Steven%20Mann/1003461150…

  • will this work on my porter cable drill?

  • Still some in stock, at Marion, S.A. as of 4:30pm Friday.
Located at the tool shop counter.

  • What's the best charger to use for these?

  • This might be a good deal for you, a compact fast charger and a 2.5Ah battery for $39.
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-power-x-change-18v-2-5ah-b…

    • +1

Cheers mate. I noticed the box for the 4ah battery says 5hrs to charge on compact charger. Any idea if this is different to the fast compact charger?

      • I think the fast charger has a higher current output, but I've not done any timed test to get a definite result.

If you're not running it flat though your charge time will be proportionally less though - a pair of 4Ah's on a swap cycle is how I use any given tool.

      • The fast charger is 3A nominal. So 80 minutes for 4Ah.

Standard charger says " 4.0Ah Battery – 160min" . 5 hours would be very slow. Powertool batteries are happy to be charged at high current.

Seems our OZB Community may be torn between Ozito and the ALDI Special Buys this weekend. http://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-sat-16-j…
I note however that the ALDI Batteries seem to have only 1 Year Warranty.

    • Torn, no. ALDI batteries are good, but much better to be in the Ozito system.

Has anyone manage to find an adaptor on thingiverse that will allow these batteries to be used on a makita tool?

  • Bought 12x of these when they were red and just $29/ea. Thought I was pretty stupid going all out at that time, but seems to have been a good decision looking back.

  • +1

I've just bought 2 x 4ah batteries and the rapid compact charger / 2.5ah combo. Still think this is better than buying cheap ebay Makita 18v batteries, just need to design / print a bracket to mount to makita tools

  • My 4Ah battery, 12 months old, only shows 2 bars when fully charged. Can I claim replacement under Ozito warranty or is it normal wear and tear?

    • It's yrs warrenty I'd say make a claim

      • An LED light might have just died, i had a battery with the middle LED stopped working, battery is fine though.

Charger should pick up if the battery is faulty, or just see how long it lasts compared to another battery.

        • Charger did pickup a fault couple of times. A few weeks later I was about to go into Bunnings with the charger and replicate the fault. Before getting into the car decided to test it again to make sure the faulty lights were showing and as luck would have it no faulty lights, just tells me the charge is complete but only 2 bars on the battery.
