Samsung Galaxy S21 (128 GB) $399, S21+ (128 GB) $699, S21 Ultra (128 GB) $999 with Telstra 1 Yr Contract $99 P/M @ JB Hi-Fi

380

Saw the banner on JB's mobile plan page. Sign up for Telstra 12 month contract @ $ 99 per month (150 GB data per month). Pricing-
S21 (5G / 128 GB / Grey colour) $399 / minimum cost $1,587 over 12 months
S21+ (5G / 128 GB / Silver colour) $699 / minimum cost $1,887 over 12 months
S21 Ultra (5G / 128 GB / Black colour) $999 / minimum cost $2,187 over 12 months

I believe in the past the pre-orders were also eligible for freebies (till 28 Jan for S21 models)-
S21 / S21+ eligible for Buds Live
S21 Ultra eligible for Buds Pro

Might work out for those who intend to sign up on the plan. Only 1 SKU is listed per model compared to multiple SKUs in past so might work for specific colour only. Please report back if anyone is successful for other colours.

Will have to wait for Harvey Norman listing to see if S21 series is also compatible with COVIDsafe app (like the S20 series)

  • Worth noting that this excludes current Telstra customers, so..

    • I'm currently on a JB Telstra plan, expiring March. If I leave early and port out today, can I get this offer tomorrow on the same number?

    • Does this include 5G data

    • +2

All telstras plans except the $55 one have 5g

      • Awesome :)

    • +2

Also porting out and in depends on the person u get at jb. Sometimes they care sometimes they dont. Apparently its supposed to be 30 days

    • Couldn't you add a new plan to get this deal and then do a number swap between your old plan and new plan before terminating the old plan? A number swap is surely an easier thing to so than port in and out.

      • +1

Yep, that's what I've done in the past with these deals. Buy a cheap $2 SIM from Vodafone or anywhere, activate it, then use that number for the deal. Call or message Telstra to get them to transfer numbers and then cancel the number you don't want. I was able to do all of that in the same day.

      • Depends on the chat agent you deal with, terms like "swap", "combine", etc may be confusing for them. Last experience I chat with more than 6-7 agents for more than a week.
Contacting via phone doesnt exist, the machine will ask you to go via chat regardless any option you choose and disconnect you like helpless human being

        • +2

To get past the machine. All you need to do is say cancel contract and you will get an agent who can help with anything

          • @Thunder-Wombat: I did indeed, "cancel", "escalation", doesnt matter, just didnt exist, maybe it was boxing day/holiday season

            • +2

@countmein: My process with the machine is is this about your account "Yes", then is this about canceling an account "Yes", please hold transferring you to a Telstra support agent.

      • I tried this with Telstra, got rejected heaps of times. Ended up cancelling with no cancellation fee via chat. But got lucky. I almost ended up with two plans!

Expensive devices soecially S21+ and S21, with relatively mediocre display (when compared to price and other flagships of last year i.e. Oppo Find X2 pro, OP 8 Pro etc) capped at 1080p when using 120Hz and only 8GB RAM. A downgrade in RAM actually from S20 series that has 12GB even in128GB models. Not that 12GB RAM is something to must have, but then price should be lower.

    • With Trump out, I'm going to wait to see if there's any changes with Huawei and Google.

      • +3

        Doubt it.

        • Hard to say as Huawei is pushing to tender for 6G in Australia now and I won't be surprised if they are doing the same for Europe and USA

    • +1

maybe its better performance means it can handle the downgraded RAM? the fact that there are all these software and hardware upgrades and the pricing structure has stayed the same is quite unique considering market trends the last few years. I'd hardly say its a 'mediocre display'.

  • Can someone do the early termination maths for me please

    • 6month termination ($594), discounted price is because of the $500 gift card on the $99 a month service.

      • Thanks!

      • +2

From last experience deal on boxing day, you also need to "return" the giftcard if you terminate early, they will charge you pro-rate on the final bill. Check your contract, I end up not terminate early

        • Good point. However this deal doesn't mention a gift card being applied so I wonder if the ETC will only be $596 ending up with the base S21 being $995 total with the buds live. Good deal if so for those that can't get EDU pricing and don't want the bonus charging base from the EDU site.

A few assumptions made here so it would be good to see the actual contract.

          • @Spizz: Ah right some assumptions here, it doesnt say gift card. Anyhow happy hunting

        • The thing about "return giftcard", is it a new term under the contract? Cause I signed up in Aug last year with the s20+ deal and cancelled on the same day. They did not request for the giftcard be returned. Actually, Telstra still has not billed me for the ETC yet.

          • +2

            @vchung916: Yes. Introduced late December.

          • +1

@vchung916: Yeah i think its new, the jb staff literally highlighted this to me, verbally and on paper says additional $300 gc will be charged in pro rate, though I received $500 gc due to boxing day deal

Yes I've been with them as well before and didnt get asked to return the giftcard when i break the contract.

Other ozb members may correct me

  • +2

Does anyone else thinks S21 phones look ugly especially with the camera setup

    • +2

Extremely. I despise the camera bump trend.
I'd rather a slight fatter phone with the cameras recessed in and a bigger battery.

      • +2

100%, the extra 1-2mm would be barely noticeable holding it in your hand, the industry is just full of uncreative designers who follow each other like sheep

        • +2

My latest phone is the oppo reno 5g which doesn't have a camera bump. But there is a small metal ball which prevents the back of the phone completely touching surfaces.

I also hate the trend of a ridiculous amount of megapixels in cameras. 108MP is equivalent to 12,032 X 9,204 resolution. Reduce the count to improve the image quality of the larger pixels.

    • +1

I actually don't mind it. Lovin the pink and blue with rose gold trim. I'm sure a case would make it completely flat

  • If we go for the $399 upfront for 12 months,do we still get the $500 JB voucher as separate gift?

    • +2

      No

  • Waiting s20fe to go down even further, or waiting telstra plus stuff up :)

    • Just bought S20 FE 5G last week and paid 594$ with trade up and 150$ extra voucher they gave me as phones were not on website

      • Cool, at jbhifi store? What phone model did you have for trade up?

        • S10e on Samsung website

  • Is Telstra still offering $10 off per month if you speak to them on live chat?

    • Try the chat and let us all know

    • Does Telstra still have live chat?

      • Yes but they never reply

  • +1

Is it possible pay extra to upgrade bigger storage ?

    • I'd like to know to. I'd prefer the 256GB over the 128GB.

      • Looks like Uskompuf answered below.

        Samsung Galaxy S21 128GB $399 on $99
        Samsung Galaxy S21 256GB $499 on $99

        Samsung Galaxy S21+ 128GB $699 on $99
        Samsung Galaxy S21+ 256GB $799 on $99

        Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 128GB $999 on $99
        Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 256GB $1099 on $99
        Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 512GB $1299 on $99

  • So whats the best move for this? for S21 Ultra plan.
Sell buds for around 300-250, keep or sell giftcard for 450 then cancel plan early? how early?

    • You'll have to repay the giftcard if you cancel early I believe. New T&Cs.

      • +1

        so its not worth this?

        • The giftcard (if it was offered) was to reduce the mobile handset outright cost and you never received a physical giftcard.
From the 10th Dec 2020, Telstra introduced new rules - see page 16, to stop people from getting the discounted mobile (through giftcard voucher) as people were cancelling and then paying out the ETC the following day or even the same day.

It was a good technical loophole which worked well for all customers while it lasted…

      • are you able to confirm, so you pay the $999 upfront and $99 for 12 months and you receive the phone and also receive the $500 voucher also along with the buds pro ? so technically you only pay under $1700 for the phone and a high tier plan?.

i was looking at doing the Trade in deal with Vodafone which is trade in my Note 10 + for $425 Vodafone adds $500 credit towards phone on a $35 phone plan for either 12, 24 or 35 months also if you have other services with them you get a discount 5% or higher the more devices also recieve the Buds Live.

JB deal is looking decent especially if i sell my phone also

    • +1

I don't think you get the $500 GC with this. Can someone please confirm?

      • +1

You are correct. You don't (it isn't mentioned in the ad) so the ETC should be only $596 with no Gift Card repayment if you cancel.

    • -1

I'm confused by all the gift card talk. It's not mentioned in the deal, but does this come with $500 JB card or not?

  • Can you use JB Hi-Fi gift cards to pay for the remaining phone cost?

  • what are peoples experiences in swapping to a different telstra plan from a jbhifi plan?

i notice that telstra have discounted their XL plan again

    • In the past switching to any other non-JB plans was akin to breaking contract so you need to pay ETC (even if the app says 0, you would be charged ETC)

    • From the 10th Dec 2020, Telstra introduced new contractual arrangements surrounding new JBHIFi and Good Guy Telstra mobile plans.
Refer to this document and then using Table of Contents refer to page 16.

If you are on a previous Telstra plans (offered by JBHIFi or Good Guys) or signed up a new service prior to the 10th Dec 2020 which is when this was introduced you are NOT affected and will not have these penalties in place. If unsure, please contact Telstra Live Chat for confirmation.

  • Just called JBHiFi and they have listed in their system that this deal is on the 28th of January. I said their own website states 1st March but apparently the bonus offer through them for Galaxy buds Live on this deal ends on the 28th of January. With phone release on the 29th January.

Just saw this mentioned by the OP in the main post. Missed it.

  • The Harvey Norman deal seems to be slightly better: https://www.harveynorman.com.au/samsung-galaxy-s21

    • +2

I don't think so. That's over 24 months, compared to 12 months on the Telstra deal.

      • $2640 S21 Ultra - Optus 24 Months
        $2188 S21 Ultra - Telstra 12 Months

So Optus is $452 more, but you get their $85/month plan. I doubt you could find a plan much better for $38/month so it's not bad.

    • Better in the fact that you don't have to outlay $399 upfront, but yes, overall cost with JB Hi-Fi cheaper.

      • Other advantage of 12 month plan is that you can buy S22 next year with a new 12 month contract (might have to go thru some hoops to port out and back in).

      • Not really cheaper when you consider you'll need to pay for an new plan once your 12 months is up with Telstra.

    • Same.shit

  • I heard that the buds are available now so I wonder if you preorder will you receive the buds today or when you pickup the phone?

    • JB said the buds are sent to you by Samsung.

  • But the Extra large plan (180 GB) is $65 per month at the moment. Isn't that a better deal?

    • Yeah but thats sim plan only, dont get the phone

  • +2

If you are in Adelaide I just saw the new S21 range on display at JB HiFi Marion.

  • When will JB have a similar deal with iPhone 12 Pro?

  • +1

When you go in-store, ask to get $10 off the monthly plan to ($89 instead of $99). JB Staff told me they can do this.
