Spirit of Tasmania ferry passengers will be able to bring their car or motorcycle at no charge for a period of four months under an expansion of the Bass Strait Passenger Vehicle Equalisation Scheme.

Spirit of Tasmania passengers can bring their car or motorcycle for free from March 1 until June 30
The Federal Government has expanded to the Bass Strait Passenger Vehicle Equalisation Scheme to boost tourism

The free travel for cars and motorcycles applies to travel on both the Melbourne to Devonport crossing and Devonport to Melbourne.

The temporary increase in the Bass Strait Passenger Vehicle Equalisation Scheme is applicable for new bookings made on/after 14 January 2021 for travel between 1 March and 30 June 2021 (unless sold out prior).

        It's a Tasmanian ship and departs from Devonport. It does the return trip from Port Melbourne.

      Not a stupid a question at all, the boat leaves from Vic. You can be a Vic resident and you might not be able to avail this if you’re not allowed home due to borders.

        Or from NSW and not allowed to come over. Or QLD, because you’d need to travel through NSW to get here, unless you want to circle out west first and get to VIC via SA.

          Because every time there's an outbreak, borders get closed and the length of the closure is unknown. I imagine they will buy new cars if there's more certainty. Right now too many uncertainty. Even booking The Spirit of Tasmania is a risk without any free cancellation in place.

    10 hour ride, 2-3 hours to board, a very rough boat ride, its not a cruise ship where you have nice decks, place smells like spew and you pay twice as much as a flight. I recommend not doing this, if you do it you will only do it once guaranteed.

      disagree. just got off the Spirit few days ago.
      Yes, 10 hour ride.
      Car queue took about 30mins in Devonport and about 20min in Melb.
      Have been on very rough years ago, but this sailing was quite smooth.
      It doesn't pretent to be a cruise ship, it is a ferry. Lounges are adequate and comfortable, food and beverages available on board, or BYO (food). Cabins are more than adequate for the amount of time you use them.
      Cost wise, family of 4 Syd to Hobart in December/Jan was $1400 on J* incl bags. Spirit with car was $1600, so would be less under this deal.
      I recommend it, have done it twice now and would do it again.

    Getting stuck in Tassie, not being able to return within the offer period and having to pay exorbitant prices on the return trip is a possibility

    The residents on some of the facebook pages I am on are already complaining that they can't get on the Ferry now can't see that there will many opportunities for anyone to take up this offer.That subsidy is now around $500 per car that is rediculous and yet the Kangaroo Island ferry gets nothing.

    Why is this deal marked for Vic and Tas users? I know that's where the ferry goes, but isn't this available to other state and territory residents too? And C-19 is no reason, as it's for several months in the future…

        That's not the point. Yes I could technically drive from WA to the east coast to get a particular KFC deal, but I'm obviously not going to. That's when you would put the states in brackets in the title, as it's clearly only of interest to those local states.

        Equally obviously, anyone using the Tasmania ferry will have to travel to Vic to catch it. So why limit the appeal of the deal? That's all I'm asking. No idea why I would have been negged for my comment though…

    Tasmania is a fantastic place.
    Doesnt matter what time of year you go there, your experience will be different.
    Whinging or whining about the weather is unimportant, goto England and whinge. Lattitude of hobart is 42 south, thats the same as about Rome 41.9 north.
    If you dont go, thats better for me, because I wont see you :)

    Just make sure everything you book is cancellable/refundable. The situation in Brisbane and NSW should be a big warning of what can happen so be prepared in case of any lockdown. I just came back from QLD in time but made sure anything I booked I could cancel if I needed to leave in a hurry.

      Just got off the phone with Spirit of Tasmania. If there is a border closure then a full refund or a change of date is allowed minus credit card fee if that helps anyone.

          Accommodation I was able to book through airbnb and most had a fully refundable policy right up until the day or if you’re booking through Expedia or OTA they have those options in place.

    I check the price before the car-free programs started and the price was so much cheaper. After day 14 of Jan, try to book again and the price is more expensive than before. So they said free car transport but increase the ticket price per person. False advertisement.

        I booked the same time, same people, same room, and the only difference is the total amount. The ticket price before 14 of Jan is $200 one way, after 14 it is $300 one way. I even take a screenshot and can see the difference between them. Do you know where can I lodge my complaint? or I have to accept the fact.

          If you've got screenshots etc I would definitely send it through to their contact email or call them and then send through. Hopefully they'll sort something out for you.

          I wonder then if they run a similar system to that of airlines which live changes prices within a range depending on demand etc

          I booked the same time, same people, same room, and the only difference is the total amount.

          I did the same and there was a price difference, but there was also a ticket difference. One was a fully flexible one that allows changes or cancellation up to 3 hours before departure, the other one only allowed changes within two days of purchase.
