3,400 points on Classic Plus lol.. (plus $167 tax)

    • +1

      Whats the best return flight?

        • +4

Seriously downvoted? Lots of unAustralian people on Ozb.

        • -5

          Good one

        • -4

remember to enter code Tiananmen upon check out

          • -2

@lgacb08: That will get you free accommodation in China, or free flight back, to be decided by whoever

        • +1

They said the best not cheapest

    • +1

$33 for 3400 points is a bit average for return

  • It's going to be first hot there, good for someone who is going to visit family

    • -6

      One-way deals are the best

  • +4

    That’s so bloody cheap

  • +31

how is it cheaper to fly 10 hours to shanghai than a 1 hour flight to canberra? wtf qantas

    • +11

Price is not related to cost, it's related to what people will pay. These flights were probably virtually empty. The flights to Canberra are for APS employees who receive knows can pay (or will drive)

      • -4

APS is not highly paid, and business travel is also restricted

        • -5

APS is very highly paid. Ask me how I know.

          • @GregRust: How???

          • @GregRust: Unless you are referring to Ministers or APS contractors

          • @GregRust: For bludgers 100%, for people who are hard working, nothing could be further from the truth atleast from my perspective.

Left APS after 12 years. Overall increase over those 12 years was probably about 20%. I got about a 10 % increase when I left 4 years ago and since then have had a 20% increase…(so 3 times the rate of public service despite starting from a higher base.

Would never ever consider going back!

        • LOL

        • APS salaries are between $52k-$103k/year depending on your level, this is not a secret as all government salaries are public knowledge to anyone who wants to look at it. Given that Australia's median is $65k/year and the average is $98k/year, they are definitely not highly paid. Their salaries are pretty average/below average. If you're a manager on the EL level then you can get the high salaries that range between $115k-$162k.

    • -2

I had family member fly today, on China Eastern, even those flights were mostly empty. So they have to try and get some bums on seats.

  • +2

Why no return? Is Qantas dumping their aircrafts in China?

    • +3

just checked, return is 529 if you're willing to stay about a month

weirdly a one way ticket in economy from shanghai to sydney on the 18th of August is 4150

      • i have no real desire to go to china but that is just so damn cheap…its incredibly tempting

    • Qantas is stopping this route. Hence the cheap one-way tickets as they have no way of getting you back to Australia without partners.

    • -6

Low demand?? There are only about 1.4 million Chinese Australians!

      • +2

        Competition is probably too stiff

      • +2

Evidence is they are not flying to Shanghai

      • +9

Why would qantas bother when Chinese airlines are govt subsidised so they can offer $500-$800 return

        • +2

Charge $250 for a Chinese visa. Subsidise the flight.

          • @Joz: Australian can have 15 days in China visa free. Last year I got two years multiple entry for about $235

            • @jowu15: Do they automatically give you 15 days when you arrive? Can you apply for a visa extension after you get there?

        • +7

And you think Qantas doesn't get any help from the Australian government?

        • +1

There's more in China no filter

          • @Poor Ass: I'm Chinese and I think China is one of if not the most racist nations on Earth as a whole. It's not malicious and hateful type of racism, more xenophobic/fearful of the unknown. China isn't as multicultural as the Western world. there's no mass migrations of other cultures in China except for expats in large cities, so Chinese aren't exposed to other races as much, so the general population is largely uneducated on diversity. It's usually false stereotypes and there being absolutely zero consequences for racism in China, it just runs rampant.

            • @NoApostrophePlurals: Ya no filter

Very direct… Ya too fat… Ya too black… acceptable but not outside China

But hey atleast you can walk around in your pajamas in Shanghai

            • +1

@NoApostrophePlurals: I think its more a curiosity thing than pure hate.

It's not as bad compared to south Korea.

            • +2

@NoApostrophePlurals: koreans and japanese are no less racist. japan whilst a great tourist destination it is in fact one of the most racist countries, they are just too polite to display it in public

              • +1

                @May4th: Agreed with this exactly.

I have found Japanese are polite but they are no means nice or caring.

I have heard many interviews of foreigners living and working in Japan experiencing lots of racism

              • @May4th: lol, ever hear of the second world war? Japanese ideals of racial supremacy made them think the US were cowards so they wouldnt fight, the China could be taken over fully in 3 months and anyone else in south east asia wasnt even human. the japanese has been reigned in due mainly to their defeat and occupation.

truthfully, whenever a homogenous country become powerful and developed, a state of national fervour is whipped up which in turn fuels xenophobia. its only natural for a citizen to be proud of their own country once their country becomes large, developed and powerful, in turn looking upon other countries with disdain.

They don't dare to say because their A330 aircraft are old and shaky and cannot compete with the new modern A350 aircraft from Chinese airlines. Additionally, they are selling overpriced tickets and providing overrated service. If I want to go to China, Qantas will be my last choice.

      • +8

They may be old but if I were travelling in economy I’d sooner choose to fly an A330 over an A350 or 787. The 2-4-2 seating layout makes a world of difference on long haul flights.

      • +3

Flew with the new A350 from China Southern from BNE to CAN, such a new flight and great service onboard.

        • I flew business on the same flight to CAN recently and had a similar experience to my previous flight with China Airlines from BNE to TPE—great staff and food.

      • Its the price.

    • +1

The last week will prove that it's not because of low demand but uncompetitive price.

  • This is very cheap because Qantas would stop the fight from Sydney to Shanghai after the 28th of July.

  • 3rd party OTAs selling as low as 197… and a bit of cashback.

  • +1

Qantas resumed its Sydney-Shanghai service in October last year after it was paused during COVID, however demand has not recovered as anticipated.

    • +1

The route is being cancelled. Hence the cheap tickets since last flight will be on the 28th this month.

  • Not showing now!!

  • -6

Great flight if you're Dan Andrews.

  • +1

    So cheap!

And China is so much better than Japan in terms of tourism and sightseeing.

    • +9

I call BS on that one!

      • +18

was going to write a rebuke to this but thought there's no point trying to educate those who are not interested. if you just looked into the history, Japanese culture is actually heavily influenced by ancient Chinese culture.

        • +11

Agreed. no point explaining to people.

          If they know they know.

And i aint hating on Japan, It was one of my favourite countries when i first started travelling and have been there over a dozen times.

But if you want true cultural experience China is where its at if you know where to go. People need to get the CCP government mentality out of their head and actually visit and see the people there.

    • +1

      lol wut

      • -3

        Chinnnaaaaa better than Japan?

Not a better time to go to Japan now with strong exchange rate. Beautiful country.

        • +21

China has a long history and lots of places to see. The problem is that it's nowhere near as western tourist friendly as Japan is.

From both an ease of doing things perspective and aggregate knowledge of how to china vs how to Japan.

    • +11

For people who really know or want to know Asian culture, of course China is the top choice.

    • -8

Mods can you ban this user? 😅😅😅😅

      • +3

You're a perfect example of cancel culture. Just because you have other beliefs and think other people are wrong you go want to get someone banned.

    • I am agreed.

Lot of people they are bias because of the politics. Besides from that, China has so much to do, to see and to experience.

My colleague she went to Bali or Phuket every year, I told her to book the China tour 999 (Now 899) and she loved it. Couldn't stop talking about that when she backs.

    • +1

It's not an error. QF are canning PVG end of July and clearly loads are low. J is selling for 1099 OW.

      • -1

Loads arent quite low enough to warrant a stupidly low price.
On the 15th of July there are 70> seats remaining in Y and 15> seats remaining in J.
On the 23rd of July there are 90> seats remaining in Y and 13> seats remaining in J.

Loads across the board are higher than 60% on all flights going out this month to PVG. Its an error fare and be prepared to have your ticket cancelled last minute.

      • -2

How do I see J for $1100? Min J cost seems to be like $2600 OW

        • +1

Did you try searching on QF.com?

          • +1

@freshofftheboat: That URL redirects me to quantitativefinance.com

If you mean QANTAS.com - yes, yes I did

If you mean another site, what site?

Edit: found it on QANTAS.com, it only comes up if you search specifically for one way.

            • @dwarves: 'it only comes up if you search specifically for one way.'
              Did OP stutter?

              • @CptnObvious: Did you know that a "return" flight is actually two separate flights, each going one way? Or nah.

      • Then why is it available for booking on QF.com?

        • -1

          Someone made a stuff up

          • +1

@AircraftFreight: Maybe…and what difference does that make at the moment to warrant a NEG……nothing has been cancelled as yet. Likely won’t be.

Great status credit value for a one way business across a few sectors.

    • Error Fares, will be cancelled and refunded in 6 weeks

Since fhe flights are as soon as tomorrow, a refund in 6 weeks time would be a welcome bonus.
Free flights is even better than cheap 😉

    • +1

Error Fares, will be cancelled and refunded in 6 weeks

Yeah nah. I just did online check-in for tomorrow.

  • +2

I just bought per-pvg rt fot $608 in November. I sm happy with that. Singapore airlines, which is superior to qantas

    • +2

that'd be a much better service however you do have to cop a transit in singapore which may not be a bad thing but some people would like a direct flight

    • which dates if you dont mind me asking? Is this (i assume) promo still ongoing?

  • Viable status credit run?

    • Nope. O class only
