Came across this, so thought I'd post. Am only just evaluating the quality of the software myself, but reviews seem positive.

Why spend money when you can get it for FREE, OzBargain style!
    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1474990

    Copy and paste, verbatim

AVS stuff is based off freeware code in which they make the user interface more "pretty" and sell as their own

AVS Video Converter = HDConvertToX, StaxRip, MeGUI, XviD4PSP or Handbrake
    AVS Video Editor = AVIDemux
AVS DVD Authoring = DVDStyler, DeVeDe, DVDFlick or AVStoDVD
    AVS DVD Copy = DVDShrink
AVS Media Player = The KMPlayer, Media Player Classic – HomeCinema

The ones I missed, I have no idea what they "do" …

    Tekno

As you can see AVS is just repackaging the open source and charging a premium for it and giving it a better GUI.
I recommend those free version and make $2 gold coin donation to each, that will help the programmers to make better products and even better GUIs in our future FREE updates ;)

    • Nice catch!

  • I've been using AVS Media products for a while and it has always been reduced. One tip is don't buy the one year option as this will have the effect of stopping the product being used.

Thanks CuteChocobo - I wasn't aware of it being based on the freeware versions. Hmm interesting.

  • A million free video converters out there!

  • FYI, if you want to rip a DVD to play on your iPad, then you will most likely also need SlyFox or similar to get past the copy protections. AVS does not have this built in. Being a user of this software, I would also agree with the comments above (always on sale, other options available). FYI, even with SlyFox, it can still have issues with some Disney movies.

  • "reviews seem positive"
Funny… I wonder if you're looking at reviews from the same places that rates things like Bonzi Buddy and Quicktime Pro as essential purchases?
