UV-Clean phone sanitiser.

I picked one of these up today, I was surprised to see such a large discount when scanning the barcode at the price checker.

These could be used for more than just phones; personally I'm hoping to use this to erase EPROMs. The lid pops out allowing a decent amount of space inside and the zip acts as a magnetic safety check so you don't accidentally turn the LEDs on while it is open.

Seems pretty neat! I hope it helps someone.

Has 'winter' already set in? I see the weak minded are accepting what the screen speaks.

eProms sound like a bad joke that would've become a COVID reality to some most likely

    • +3

An EPROM, or erasable programmable read-only memory, is a type of programmable read-only memory chip that retains its data when its power supply is switched off.

      • It's read-only, except it's not read-only, but then we can't call it a memory, but we need an acronym!

      • -1

I studied these 22 years ago.

    • +3

An EPROM is Eraseable Programmable Read Only Memory. It can be erased with UV-C. They usually have a clear round hole on them. On very old PC's and other things, you will see chips with tape over the center. That is probably an EPROM.

An EEPROM is Electronically Eraseable Programmable Read Only Memory. It can be erased electronically as the name implies.

Both of them are non-volatile, so they do not lose their contents when power is removed.

Hope this clears up everything for y'all and happy new year

      • I dont think anyone in the message trail was confused about EPROMS. Many seem to have missed the joke though.

    Douglas Adams would be pleased.

If the Golgafrinchan‘s had these after they sent the ‘B’ ship away disaster may have been avoided…

    • +3

      That's why I purchased 42 of 'em.

This is all gimmick. Why not just use dettol wipe it around. It kills 99.999999999999% bac and virus

    • +13

For the 0.000000000001% that remain XD
Anything that preys on people's fears sell like hotcakes.

    • +8

Nah, dettol was not a good idea. My wife did that and now she has a new phone. Maybe not that bad idea though :)

      • +5

Did she use dettol straight from the bottle? Or diluted with water?

        • +1

Dropped it in a bowl of Dettol and water. Can't think why it went wrong.

        • +26

She knew what she was doing…

          • @Baghern: I kinda thought so and that's why I said maybe not that bad idea…

        • Never mind, she used the wet tissues on the claimed water proof phone.

    • +1

Cleaned , softened and perfumed it with baby wipes

FYI, 99.99% is marketing gimmick. In reality it’s more like 70-80% according to scientific testing.

    • kills up to 99.9% of bacteria and viruses

The remaining % are the types of virus or bacteria we should be worried about… unfortunately this device let’s it through 😅

Plus, all the germs will move into the shadow areas to avoid the light.

      • -2

        Some viruses are good

        • +1

I thought it was some bacteria are good 🙄

    • And leaves the 0.0000000000001% that is coronavirus…..

99.9% is purely a marketing and legal loophole.

  • @Chris2027 I'm curious with your use case - why would you need to wipe the EPROM data in such a manner?

    • +2

      MK Ultra?

    • +1

I mess around with vintage computers and I don't have an eprom eraser, but I have a collection of roms that need wiping. I have heard you can leave them out in the sun for a while (never tried) but I would prefer something handy like this, thats if it can do the job.

      • +4

Erasing them in the sun is pretty much a myth. It takes years of direct sunlight to erase an EPROM. I tried it once and left one in direct sunlight for around a week straight. At the end it still hadn't lost a single bit.

      • Leaving them in the sun works. Source: I'm of a similar vintage to the computers you mess around with and once did it with an EPROM I had for a BBC Micro.

I think I may have reprogrammed it using a bit of kit my dad borrowed from work but it was over 30 years ago and I might have that mixed up with something else.

    • Can also erase EPROMs from cars and reprogram new tunes on them.

I'd be sus if they're real uvc. big clive on YouTube has torn down a bunch of fakes from ebay. you'd hope big w would do better but ya never know.

With the bigger one you'd be saving (making?) $119.

    • +3

Looked like a great idea and price to I read the reviews on Amazon.

Apparently takes 6 goes to become effective. One reviewer used UV sensitive medical cards to test the effectiveness

  • +1

People have corona ocd need this. Use a disinfectant wipe is more than sufficient.

  • I guess you might want something like this if you touch things with your hand that are unclean, then wash your hands, then touch your phone again it's like unwashing your hands. But does it even work?

    • Mobile phones are filthy beasts! Cleaning them is a good idea both in and out of rona. UV light does kill viruses. Hopefully these LEDs are legit.

      • +1

They may be filthy, but for almost every single phone the source of that filth is the owner. Washing your hands and not putting the phone down on unknown surfaces will be more effective.

Like most disinfecting treatments, the second it's finished the object is open to new contamination.

        • +5

Practically impossible to keep a phone clean. Touch anything like a trolley and then your phone and it's game over for cleanliness.

I assume mine is dirty if I take it out of my apartment (unless it's just for a walk and I don't touch it), and it gets disinfected when I'm back.

UVC LEDs are really expensive. The ones in this are probably really weak or fake UVA LEDs. My Samsung cleaner uses the UVC bulb and runs for 10mins

the save % tells me this is some kind of a gimmick product…

Not sure if its hurting my iphone but ive been using isopropyl alcohol from one of the previous ozbargain deals with it diped in paper towel. I know I should wear gloves while doing it.

    • +2

Just removes the anti glare/anti fingerprint coating on the display. Will turn your phone into a sun glare & fingerprint magnet but will be safe.

      • well i have screen protector on it ..hopefully thats helping XD - thanks for the iNFO!

      • I've been cleaning my Pixel 5 with pure metholated spirits and it's been fine. Did the same with my Pixel 3 before that. Could cause longer term damage to the water seal maybe, but so far so good.

  • Nice if you can grab one…

  • Which big w has this in stock?

  • No idea if these work, but getting a few of these as placebos just to satisfy my wife's OCD with cleanliness.

  • +3

Surely exposure to UV isnt good for OLED (AMOLED included)

    https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlepdf/2019/ra/c9ra09730…

May be not a good idea? I will stick to 70% ethanol/isopropyl.

JB have these as well, might be able to price match as they sell it for $39 link

  • Can I use this with toothbrushes?

    The Ultimate snake oil kit.

  • Can't find a store in Brisbane that has it, anyone?

FYI. It's hard to confirm if these are simply leds that mimic UV light colour or if these are infact real leds that output UV. The issues are with the spectrum it is in. There is a low form of UV output around the low 300nm or there is the ideal range which is around 350nm.

Correct me if I'm wrong on these figures but if you want quality UV or black lighting you have to spend.

I have old school black tubes, essentially they are a fluorescent light without the coating.

I just dunk my phone in bleach. $1/L at coles.
Of course I'm not stupid, I put my phone in a bag so the liquid can't damage it.

    • Thanks for the tips
