Nice first post. Note these aren't really $99 but usually around $30-mark.

would be better imo for overall value, warranty, etc

    • Yeah files are so big these days that would make life a lot easier even if you're cheap

That is a better value but it needs to be noted as well that these two are not changeable. Their interfaces, NVMe M.2 and SATA M.2 are different.

Plus delivery. Seems to be $10 postage to Sydney

  • +1

    Free pickup is also possible.

$10 more for 250gb posted a bit earlier much better value.

They should really stop making 128gb

    • It's still perfect as a boot drive.

      • +1

not really, add 1 or 2 programs and ur full

    • They should really stop making 128gb

They did, most new model drives start at 250

  • FYI the BX500 are moderately faster than the WD Greens, about 20-35% faster. I got mine for $22 delivered during Boxing Day.

    120GB vs 128GB tho.

Isn't everything retail basically "Free pickup" ?
    It's almost 2021! I should be getting a discount if it isn't being posted ! ;)

Some places charge for Click and Collect if you don't spend enough which is a bit rich!

      • Yea I've always found that ridiculous.

        Ahem Kmart

For speeding up an old, but not too old, laptop.

Provided it just happens to have an M2 port that’s not used?

      • Sata adapter if you've got one lying around. If you need to buy one might make sense to spend on a plug'n'play drive.

        • I don’t see the point, correct me if I’m wrong but the SATA bus is the bottle neck here, most SATA SSD can saturate the bus anyway except the worst WD green?
The NVME drives will draw more power and run hotter

          • @[Deactivated]: Compatibility options in the future. You're not doing this for performance vs. native sata ssd.

            • @Shard: Smart… the price is basically the same now.
              I approve.
I would’ve said the only downside was “rescuing” data, but the SATA adapter makes it easy.

          • @[Deactivated]: Actually the nmve drive with L1.2 low power state should have a lower AVERAGE power draw than a SATA ssd.

It is much lower at rest, and due to the speed will go to L1 and L1.2 much faster.

But, write speeds on any SSD are impacted by the capacity. This would not impact this one as much as you are correct the SATA interface is the most prominent limiting factor.

After adding an SSD to a few old laptops, the speed improvement is drastic. Even with Dramless. (now in my K8S cluster!), but it is still an old laptop and suited only to those tasks.
