I got dudded twice by Acer, never again. I stick with HP, Dell, and Lenovo.

    • What happened, mate ?
Can you be more specific ?

      • +8

Dudded bro, what more do you need. 4 Ds

      • Acer refused to honour a cash back offer on 2 laptops that I bought. Long story, but they just flat out lied.

Got dudded twice by HP, never again. I stick with Acer, Asus and Lenovo.

      It's all personal experience.
Basically "don't get a HP" is the advice you'll get walking in store as they get returned for defects much more than other brands.

      • +3

HP build quality is rubbish for most of their models, especially the hinges

    • +6

Brand loyalty is for suckers. Reviews for the current model, warranty terms and conditions and a reputation of honouring them mean much more than a badge.

      • When you use a product, you're either happy with it or not. If you are, you'll want similar. If not, you'll want different. Consumerism 101.

I see you've edited, allow me to do the same. Some things just don't change - ie HP's build quality. People have preferences, it's clear "honouring the t&c's" is your first thing, I look for value.

        • +2

HP's build quality doesn't change? Um build quality for any manufacturer can change run to run nevermind product to product.

          • @syousef: It seems like everyone has something bad to say about a brand cos of a personal bad experience. If they were all that bad no one would be buying any laptops

            • +1

@Danstar: Did you read what I wrote at all? Judge both based on reviews of the individual models and based on recent experiences people have had with the brand. That doesn't mean pick the one bad review and refuse to buy. It means look at what others have experienced. Contrary to popular belief people don't just write reviews when things are really bad. They also love to write reviews when things are fantastic. So if 2% of the reviews are bad, that doesn't mean you should never buy. But if it's closer to 50% you'd be a fool to.

One thing you should always do with the reviews is make a call on whether or not the complaint is reasonable.

              • @syousef: I just saw that 2 people saying specific brands are bad.

                DYOR

                • @Danstar: Couldn't be anything to do with customer service circling the drain just about everywhere in recent years could it?

Damn cheap laptop with 2060 graphics!!

    60hz screen

  • I have an Ideapad S540 but want something for casual gaming. Would this be ok I wonder…

Or better to get a Xbox Series S or something.

    • Do you want portability? Get a laptop.

You want ease of use, plenty of free games (game pass), want to sit in front of a tv? Get an Xbox

      • Portable and minimal - get laptop

      • +1

plenty of free games (game pass), want to sit in front of a tv?

If you're in the market for a laptop anyway, this would be a good option. Just grab a controller for ease of use and a HDMI cable. Game Pass is also on PC.

But if home gaming if all that you're interested in, grab an Xbox.

I bought two of these laptops for my kids Christmas presents 2 weeks ago at $1398 each. I called up Harvey Norman today and asked them up if they could refund me the difference and sure enough they did! So Thank you for posting this!

lol RTX2060 gaming laptop for both your kids?? Thanks dad!

  • I grabbed the 1650ti variant for $996. Havent used it yet so can't report on quality but I was impressed that it was delivered so quick. Ordered 21/12 delivered 23/12.

Pretty good price for 2060 RTX ! Man , only need another 8GB of ram, and your playing pretty much anything. The 10300H will be pretty average unfortunately, but will make do for gaming…

I have the 1650ti 144hz variant that I got two weeks ago for 996. I upgraded the RAM with another 8GB to bring it up to 16gb - I highly suggest doing the same for this model for whoever buys it, RAM will be the bottleneck for a lot of the newer games. I also added another 500gb NVME SSD in as well. The whole process took 10 minutes.

Performance: the below performance is in reference to playing COD MW / Warzone.
Screen - due to the nature of how laptops are made, the screen will not hit 144hz in games like Modern Warfare etc, however, after installing the extra 8gb ram, performance has been awesome, on the laptop screen I get about 60 - 75 FPS on low settings and consistently get 60 FPS (locked it in at this on the laptop screen). Works great on Halo MCC - very smooth too. For MW / Warzone - I now play on an external monitor - FPS runs at around 90 - 110 and I have locked it at 90 as my monitor is 75 hz. The reason there is such a big difference between the lower performance on the Laptop screen is because the GPU processes everything and it has to then be pushed through to the shared graphics on the CPU which is the only way the laptop screen works - there is no way of changing it, as such, adding extra loading, while the HDMI out port is directly connected to the GPU, hence, cutting out the extra step. Doesn't sound like much but it will make a difference (did some research into it too).

I feel the CPU could have been better, but it does the job.

Cooling - The Acer Nitro Sense App is easy enough to use, just bump the fan speed up to Max or Custom Profile. So far, CPU temp avg is around 70-80 (loading at ~60-65%) while the GPU temp avg is around 64 with a loading of 65-70%. This is noted playing Modern Warfare for ~4 hours and has been consistent over the last week.

Keyboard - not the greatest, can miss presses but it doesn't bother me as I use Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller and mostly use a gaming mouse and keyboard.

I would would definitely recommend the 2060 model if you have the money to spend and are looking for a gaming laptop as I have been more than happy with my 1650ti model.

    • What RAM is it supplied with for the first stick? Is it DDR4-2933 like the CPU supports or did they cheap out and put 2400 or 2666 in it?

Got a mate grabbing one and he's clueless about this stuff and 1000km away so I dunno if I'd even be able to guide him through CPU-Z to check before he buys the second stick.
Edit: dunno if he'll be paying the PC parts shop to fit the RAM or if he has some mate local to put it in, so that's a worry too.

      • +1

It's a 3200 SODIM. The 2933 is the MOBO / CPU limitation. I put a 3200 in the second slot and it's both active at 2933MHZ. I got a crucial 3200 SODIM from Scorotec and did the install with my mate. Took 10 Mins.

Can check the Ram in CMD. Just google the check codes.

  • Cpu is worse than 6600k in single core i.e. games. This will bottleneck in 1080p.
