    • Amazon are perhaps matching Bing Lee.. lowest price I have seen!
Added this to the original post… Thanks!

      • Can confirm. Picked one up recently and there was plenty in stock around my area (2000)

  • Can you use Voip on this with NBN?

    • +1

You need two things to get VoIP working on the R700P.

      1. your VoIP providers username and password.
      2. a VoIP phone or VoIP ATA.
      • +1

ok thanks. So for the old legacy phones suppose you need a modem with a voip port or an ata adapter device …

        • That's true although new modems with dedicated VoIP ports are few and far between in 2020. Who do you use for your VoIP service?

          • @Twix: Transferring to NBN in Jan. Looking at the TPlink vr600v v2. Or something like this deal plus an ATA device :)

            • +1

@trevor99: Not many ISPs give out their VoIP username and password. I recommend keeping your internet and VoIP services separate from each other.

The VR600V should be suitable for a smaller property. For a larger property purchase a different router and a VoIP ATA.

              • @Twix: Thanks, so maybe this deal and Cisco ATA 191 or Grandstream HT801?

                • +1

@trevor99: R7000P and those ATAs are suitable. Maybe wait for Boxing Day and NY sales.

  • Can you use this as a repeater to share the data/internet from cheap sim cards I've bought off posted bargains here?

  • +8

Lots of complaints about dropouts, early deaths, being killed by firmware upgrades and other issues on ProductReview, Amazon and elsewhere.

    • interesting.. Amazon.com seems to have it as 4.3 out of 5 with 62k ratings… mostly good, but some bad
      https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NA80JML#customerReviews
But I guess they are mixing their router models in their reviews..

      • +12

if you go to that same link, scroll down click 'see all reviews', then on the 'all formats' filter change it to just this model - majority of the amazon reviews are overwhelmingly bad for this particular model.

    • I have the D7000 since ADSL2+ 5 years ago, still going strong now and non-issue with dropping off, may be once a month. Firmware is update to date too.

      • 4 years and drop offs started earlier this year…

        • -1

So 4 years is a very good lifespan

          • @SnoozeAndLose: yeah… 4 years… 24/7… got my moneys worth. Now looking for a new option.

          • @SnoozeAndLose: This could be due to firmware upgrade and not hardware.
So if someone buys it now, they would get frequent dropouts.

    • +1

Have been running a R7000 on both - DD-WRT & Asus-Merlin for many years, very stable. Recently went back to stock which works OK as I have it paired with a R8000 but far less features on stock firmware.

    • +1

Had same issue with dropouts on D7000. What fixed it was turning off WMM under QoS.

It will kill the download speed on old phones it seems but if your phone is recent it will be completely fine well worth it.

    • Looks to be the same one I got from dick smith about 5 years ago. It died within 12 months. Replaced it for another and no issues for 4+ years. Reset it every 2 or 3 months. Never done an update or anything. It just works.

      • +3

It "just works" except you had to replace it in the first year and reset it every 2 or 3 months since then 🤔

        • I have NBN wireless. Sometimes it has an orange light on the box. Sometimes the router does.
All I do is turn off the power point. Then a few minutes later everything works.
I could probably look at settings and updates but it does what I need it to do so I'm happy there.
To be honest I'm surprised this one has lasted as long as it has. Behind the TV is a dusty spider web mess that gets cleaned once a year.
And with any tech. Something that's on 24/7 for 5 years and still working is pretty good to me.

    • Strange, I've had 2 of these running (one is a VPN router) and haven't had any issues with it. Maybe I was just lucky

    • +1

Not gonna lie, this is the worst router I have ever owned and used. Completely steered me away from Netgear products.

    • Edit: thought was R7000, i need to read gooderer.

    • I had a D7000 that would just randomly stop broadcasting any signal through wifi regularly (I’m talking about multiple times a day). I had to turn off wifi on my device(s) and turn it back on. Had enough a few months ago and bought a TP-Link router and turned off the wifi on the D7000, been great since.

AX is the new standard not AC

    • +9

… and what is your point cupcake? Don't think OP has made an assertion that AC is brand new.

    • +1

      Wifi 6?

  • +3

Why do high-end routers always have to look like some variation of "Born out of a Transformers' butthole"? Why can't they just be… plain?

Jokes aside though, what's with the USB 3.0 (Oh sorry, USB 3.2 Gen 1) port on the front?

    • +1

Positioned as far as possible from the 5GHz antennas to reduce interference.

      • Why does a router need a USB port though? Can you like, beam files directly off the router? How does that work?

        • +2

Used for ReadyShare USB storage. I have my backups going to attached 4TB 2.5 portable

          • @MMM: Is that portable drive powered by the USB or do you use a y cable?

            • @beebul: Single cable powered by USB on the router.

              • +1

                @MMM: Cheers - ordered one 👍

    • For ppl who have external hard drives and want to share the space across the network.

    • +2

There are plain looking routers from Ubiquiti, Asus Zenwifi, Netgear Orbi and so on.

  • I nearly bought one of these the other day… I have NBN HFC with iiNet would this work okay… The router they gave me has terrible WiFi

    • +2

I am using this with SuperLoop/Aussiebroadband on HFC without issue..

So I dont think you should have any issues with IINet.

      • Thanks very tempted… I saw this price on Amazon at the weekend didn't realise it was a bargain or would have posted myself.

Our current router has awful range…

    • Had this exact setup when I had iiNet cable in Geelong - cable gateway modem (which had terrible wifi) bridged to this model router. Worked fine and the difference in wifi performance was night and day.

  • Use this to replace vodafone hfc router. my life is better, strong wifi coverage, MUMIO tech. Cant complain at this price.

  • Currently on Aussie broadband 100/20 plan FTTP. Anyone have experience with this modem and similar circumstances? House is roughly 230m2 with an outdoor deck and I’ll have the modem central in the house with heavy internet usage

Looking to pull the pin and buy this. Would love to hear some advices

    Cheers lads and ladettes

    • +1

I had this and it was fine in similar circumstances and I don't think you could go wrong for the price. My block is around 536m2 and I basically got signal anywhere. Another poster said there were complaints about these dying, but I had two running at once (one is VPN only) and no issues on either.

      • +1

Just ordered, thank you for your advice!

    • +1

Yep - this will suit you well. Have had it for over year and it’s been great

      • Just ordered, thank you for your advice!

  • Gone and ordered one, hope it will solve my wi-fi woes :D

  • +5

DD-WRT firmware only, no Merlin or Tomato.

slightly updated version of the old Nighthawk R7000..

I have the R7000, max download around 360mbs, without installing DDWRT and making adjustments to the settings..

On the other hand the telstra smartmodem gen 2 sodes 860mbs down…easily..
    No mesh..

    No Wifi6..

Getting old and tired compared to the newer offerings..

In the end I decided to pass.. I think there are better / faster offerings for just a little bit more cash..

and the Nighthawks R7000s need a bit to TLC to get going probably…

Interface is also very very frustratingly slow..

I saw this a week ago.. and decided to pass..and didn't think it was such a good deal to post..

Wifi, reach isn't as good as some of the others..

    • Interesting, thanks for the feedback.

    • +1

What are better alternatives for a little bit more cash?

      • What is your cash limit?

        • +1

I am looking to upgrade my router and I was just wondering what better alternatives @Kelvin was referring to above when he said, "In the end I decided to pass.. I think there are better / faster offerings for just a little bit more cash.."

      • The Asus ax88 which is 2.5x the price ?:D

Don't know he made some good points but didn't give any alternatives

  • My r7000 works all over the house including front and back yard. I’m on 50/20fttp Aussie bb.

    • It will be fine for 50/20..

      it really struggles with 1000/50,
and when you have loots of and lots of devices, google homes, cameras, etc..

  • Is this good/ suitable for virtual desktop use with oculus quest 2?

  • +2

Also a free "Aerocool Premium MFI 8-Pin Lightning to USB Cable 1m (Black)" together with the "ESET Internet Security - 3 Devices, 12 Months Subscription. Windows 10& Mac Compatible"

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07F617VLB/ref=crt_ewc_…

  • Bit worried about the mixed reviews with this one, is there an equivalent or better from a more reliable brand around the same price?

  • Actually what is deferent between the r7000 and r7000p?
Got the r7000 from 4-5 years ago and the router is running tomato firmware since day one. Still going strong and stable and hardly see any drops out. Good WiFi coverage compare to other routers provided by ISPs.

  • Thanks, purchased

  • I had my R7000 AC1900 replaced when the warranty was about to end. The replacement was very shoddy. Makes funny buzzing noises. Netgear refused to change it. I've been stuck using it for 2 years. Should I get this?

  • Thanks OP got 1

  • Not sure how improved is this compared to R7000 but my R7000 really struggles now with multiple devices , smart plugs etc. wi fi keeps dropping out
Glad that I ordered the Asus ax88 from Bing Lee couple of weeks ago, hopefully goes for another 5 years

    • How much?

      • Bought Ax88u from Bing Lee for $384
        Was posted here

    • +1

Should have flashed AsusWRT-Merlin (http://xvtx.ru/xwrt/download.htm), it basically turns it into an ASUS router. The default Netgear firmware is junk. I've been running Merlin for 5 years. Rock solid. I have over 40 clients, a lot of smarthome stuff. Hasn't missed a beat. The ASUS management UI really is unbeatable.

      • Thanks, had never heard of it.
        Does it support DLNA?
Can I put the stock firmware back in it in case of any issues ?

        • If you mean does it support a DLNA server on your network via uPnP then yes. But it can also act as the DLNA server with content on a connected USB device.
And yes, you can restore the original firmware. But read the instructions carefully as you can easily brick it if you do the wrong thing.

  • Hmmm I was using the telstra cable wifi modem and it was fine but got the google wifi router for fun. The telstra one had better signal.

got over 30 devices in the house connected to the router so erm how would this fair?

  • can i use my spare telstra smart gen 2 modem to extend my wifi signal?

  • Just arrived and set up today, continuation of my comment above. It is working flawlessly, had to call Aussie bb for them to help me config it. As usual, customer service is easy to deal with and easy to understand.

Speeds increase about 25% from same spot same time and same device (75mbps > 103mbps)

Range also increase by quite a bit.

Old modem is an Optus supplied sagecom (4yo)

Pretty happy for the price $149. Thank you for everyone’s advice!

  • +1

Has anyone successfully flashed this with Merlin software?

Very tempted to pick one up just a bit worried about some of the negative reviews about dropouts etc?

  • Next day delivery with Amazon.
Plugged it in, it auto-configured with my NBN username and pass.
I set wifi 2.4 and 5g name to the same name as previous router, everything in the house connected flawlessly.

Wifi now reaches the driveway while before I used to have a wifi extender.
Speeds on wifi pretty much doubled.

Having some issues with my phone (galaxy S10+2) dropping in/out of the 5G wifi network, connected but no internet while other devices are online and internet connected.
No issues with running 2 x PS5's, Netflix, Amazon Prime and other services.

    • wait, "auto-configured with my NBN username and pass" don't you need a modem for this? I'm so out of the loop with networking these days

      • Yeah I have the nbn box, but the router is supposed to do the ppoe with user and pass.
So I called my provider, got my user/pass.
But when to put it on the web interface and it was all in it.
        Internet worked straight away etc

    • +1

Same SIDs and same passwords as before.
What a good idea! We have so many devices.
      Thanks.

  • Hi guys,

How is this when compared to Xiaomi AX3600 AIoT Router? I'm tossing up between these 2, any inputs would be appreciated. Thanks
