Just get an iPad or galaxy tab s6. Hard enough to get a kid to enjoy learning than punish them with a poor user experience
its a hard choice, i want to stay around $200 mark as he is only 5 and the risk of the screen getting cracked etc is high. (they have no concept of value…..)
Get the alldocube iplay 20. Its around that price range.

I got an older 1GB Lenovo tablet to use as a car GPS, but it really struggles to run Waze, cannot run Google Maps, and the wifi often refuses to connect to the hotspot, needing a reboot.
Would this be any better? I think I need the $138 2GB M8 mentioned above.

Only because it's Android Go. Regular Android will struggle on that.
@BadGiraffe: Android Go cuts the overhead of the OS a little.
It's still going to absolutely choke on modern apps.
@Merlict: Agreed. Only the "Go" apps might perform acceptably on this. I bet web browsing is going to be a nightmare.
@bargaino: Pretty sure they're individual apps. And you can't get them on regular Android. YouTube Go, for example, allows you to download videos to watch offline. Regular YouTube won't let you do that.

Google should not allow google apps on devices with too little RAM. It just trashes the android experience.
Don't buy this, it's utterly useless. It's so slow and underpowered it won't even run the most basic apps of today.
1024x600 7" screen, hey that's the same as my Galaxy Tab from a decade ago.

This is basically obsolete.
I'd suggest something like the P80X for under $100 from Banggood AU warehouse instead. 2GB/32GB, 1280x800. If you want something a bit bigger the P10HD is under $140 from BG AU warehouse also, 3GB/32GB 1920x1080.
They have the 9863A chip which seems to perform surprisingly well.
I have the P10HD and an Alldocube iPlay 20 (similar to P10HD but 4/64GB) and pretty happy for the $. The iPlay does run a lot smoother, not sure if it's the extra GB of RAM or that it runs Android 10 instead of 9. Not available from AU warehouse at the moment but is around $180.
I got the iplay 20 pro. Can recommend it. If you want to save money definitely go the non pro version.

After having a Samsung Galaxy tablet and an iPad both broken by the kids, despite being in rugged cases, I decided I wanted less stress in my life and bought two of these. They work remarkably well, especially when paired with BobjGear cases. The kids actually prefer the smaller size, which was a surprise to me. They're bright enough for home use.
It runs the usual apps well: ABC kids, Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Khan academy kids, Inventioneers. I use the android Family settings restricting the times when the tablet can be used and it gets locked quite effectively out of those hours. I've removed all other apps (browser, YouTube, etc). It lasts all day and in the evening (downtime is 6pm) I just gather them up and plug them in for the night in the laundry room.
Just curious - how's your YouTube experience on this (if you've tried it). Looking at max 2hrs continuous playback.
Also can you share how Outlook/Gmail and basic Chrome searches run, considering 1GB ram?

Sorry, I can't help you with either of those :(
I deleted/disabled Youtube, Chrome and Gmail, and it's a hassle re-enabling them. I've disabled the Google play store (you can't uninstall it) because my son would install a bunch of free apps with ads in them that are super annoying, and there's no way to prevent that in the play store. To install an app now, I have to go to settings, applications, find Google Play store and enable it, then remember to disable it again later.
In terms of video playback, Netflix is performant enough that the kids are happy with it, haven't seen any buffering or freezing etc at all. They also use ABC kids iview and Disney+ and they're both fine too. So perhaps Youtube would be too? I don't know.
Just a note: the play store doesn't have auto-complete and it seems to be less fancy, which suits me fine because I just want to get in there and search for an app I know the name of, but for adult use if you want to explore what apps there are, you'd get frustrated.
Installing apps is slower than you'd expect, and the first time setup process is very slow - give yourself 10mins or something. But once the apps are loaded they seem to perform reasonably well, for the limited few that I've actually tried.
Edit - oh, playback time - they use it for at least 5 hours a day and it seems to hold it's own, I think it's mostly video playback.
